The young man came out of nowhere. He reached into a tiny pocket on the left sleeve of his t-shirt and pulled up a tiny bag of white powder. He was trying to sell us cocaine. We turned to walk away and there he was again, out of nowhere. Naturally, this must be the number one question his tourist-customers have out here on the street. Are they buying pure cocaine or talcum powder? Without a doubt. The question was whether or not we want to buy it. And the answer to that was no. He looked disappointed but he got it and walked away. Looking around the tiny little square, it was clear we were the only gringos around. It was also clear that we are his target market: gringos and, even better, Americans. The plaza is at the end of a narrow, cobblestone alley full of little shops that had closed for the night. It was a Sunday and dark out. All the tourists were gone and all that was left were a smattering of Colombian families. A trio of kids performed tricks with soccer balls in perfect sync. It was a crowd pleaser and everyone clapped enthusiastically. They were really good and deserved the accolades. As a result, all the backpackers had sequestered themselves in their hostels. Tourists with more money to spend only come here during the day, mostly in groups. Organized tours of the neighborhood are quite popular. Earlier, we encountered a huge group on a tour surveying the amazing graffiti found around here. We were looking at it on our own at the time. The streets are cobbled and narrow. Many are crumbling. In fact, on our first day here, the daughter of a cafe owner in a much swankier part of town was astonished at our bravery. Yet, our experience has shown that most places said to be scary are scariest from the outside. We turned and headed up the empty street in search of an open bar where we could have one last beer before bed. We turned toward the shouting and there came our friend again. He was running up the hill as fast as one can run in flip-flops on cobblestones. We stopped and waited. We felt for him. I cut him off. He disappeared around the corner. If there had been a bar open, we might have bought him a beer. I wanted to explain to him just how much suffering that little packet in his pocket has caused his country and his people. I wanted him to see how the terrible violence and exploitation drives people to flee their countries in Central America for our country, the USA, where they face the racist rhetoric of an inept president Trump and the radicalized party in power. If only he saw how that war put people with drug addictions in prisons run by for-profit companies. If only he knew who was really profiting from that little packet in his pocket. Perhaps he needed a sale to put food in his belly. Maybe a sale would keep him from being beaten. We ended up finding an open bar. And the price for a local beer here was three times what it cost anywhere else. The security guard outside was presumably meant to protect those backpackers brave enough to be out after dark, against all the advice of travel writers. It was nice. It was contrived. It was mostly for tourists. Nonetheless, we had that last beer while watching the ever-present soccer game on the big screen TV. Once again contradicting all the wisdom of the travel guides, he confidently advised us to go between 10 am and 3 pm if we wanted to hike up the 1, steps. But go in a group. It was insight worth the inflated price of just-average beer. Yet, something tells us we may have been better off just hanging out with the happy families in the tiny plaza, watching talented kids dribble soccer balls in unison for a few coins.
