If you know me at all even a little bit you know that I love New York City. But my obsession didn't start with one trip, one ride in a cab, or those two tickets to Hamilton. Although to be honest, the Hamilton experience didn't hurt. No, my love for New York City grew in my heart the way the sun rises, slowly—so imperceptibly that it's hard to actually distinguish when the night ended and the day began. Part of my slow-growing love, though, came from making a lot of mistakes. I've made ALL of the rookie mistakes. I've done ALL of the things that people desperately want to avoid so they don't look uncool. New York gets you. It trips you up with its obstacles and people and differences from every other city in America. But it doesn't do this with prejudice. New York isn't out to get tourists. It's just out. And if you know it's quirks, and some quick tips—I believe you will grow to love it just as much as I do. Okay, maybe not that much It's tempting. You've just arrived off the plane. You're excited. Where to first? The cab line! You wait and you tell the driver where you want to go, and then you sit there for half an hour as he bumps and stops through traffic, all through the city. It's extremely tempting to check in on your e-mail, your social-media, to take a cab selfie and post it But DON'T. You will get sick. Cab nausea is a thing, and it is as hard to kick as a hangover once you get out of the taxi and onto the street. Don't start your first day in New York off with motion sickness. Trust me. Put the phone away. I know you're not allowed to bring water on the plane, but that doesn't mean you can't bring an empty water bottle and fill it up as soon as you arrive at Laguardia. Water is essential in the city and helps to ward off the aforementioned cab-nausea. If you're going to have a water bottle with you, I'd also recommend especially for the ladies carrying a large tote bag rather than a small purse. That way, as the day goes on, you have a place for little souvenirs or things you pick up, as well as that water bottle. You want your hands free. This rule is kind of obvious, but much to my chagrin, I often forget to follow it. Especially if you're keeping water close at hand, it's important to take any opportunity you're given to use the john. If you're in a pinch, the city hides its bathrooms in large department stores and Starbucks coffee shops. Sneakers are to city living as water is to the fire department: essential and live-saving. These are my current favorites. These are another pair I love. And another. Wear them with pride. If you're afraid of looking like a tourist, check out the next rule. New Yorkers don't wear black because they're mean or boring. They wear it because they've learned the city—and you WILL sweat, no matter the season. Black helps you avoid embarrassing sweat stains and also helps you to pull off those sneakers you're not used to wearing. Almost any sneaker looks awesome against an all-or-mostly-black attire. Also -- you won't have to worry about choosing what to wear and wasting precious time each day. Just throw on the black and go. The Metro isn't hard and it isn't dangerous. Just swipe, move through the turnstile, and pass the card back for the next person to swipe. This is much easier than buying a card and for everyone to have to dig in their pockets for their card while the rest of New York waits behind you, annoyed. Take a cab, only whenever absolutely necessary. If the light is on, the taxi is available to hail. Nothing is more embarrassing than spending all your energy yelling at taxis that already have people inside of them. Been there. Done that. Do a neighborhood For example, Soho is great for shopping. By keeping your adventures limited to a neighborhood, you'll help yourself from burn-out and save some things for your next trip. Because you'll want to come back. If you're visiting the city, you're going to be on the go a lot walking, seeing, experiencing. By choosing to eat four or five small meals a day rather than three big ones—you'll give yourself a bit more flexibility to sit back and take a rest when the afternoon comes and you've been walking for a long time. Eat breakfast at 8 a. Little stops for coffee or juice are also good excuses to get off your feet and find a bathroom. NYC gives you the feeling that everyone is moving a hundred miles an hour, but that's not necessarily true. They just know where they're going. Most people in the city follow the same route every day—walk these blocks, take this subway, go into the office, then do the same commute in reverse. If you're exploring the city, it's okay to not know where you are. Just pause, move over to the side of the road, look at your phone, figure out where you're going. No one will fault you for this. They will fault you for standing in the middle of the sidewalk and trying to figure it out. For me, that's going to brunch. For someone else, that might be going on a run or going to a yoga or spin class. That might mean finding a ju-jitsu gym or tracking down the best beer brewery. The coolest thing about NYC is imagining how your life might look if you lived there. And no one lives in Times Square. So there you have it people. About once every few weeks, I get an e-mail from a friend asking the age-old question about the place we call home. I've answered the question before , but it seems like is Nashville changing constantly. There's always new restaurants to explore and things to see—and some are better than others. Nothing is worse than traveling to a fun city, and ending up in a restaurant that all the locals secretly loathe. So if you're headed to Nashville anytime soon, here's the skinny on where to eat, drink and be merry. I've separated all my favorites into categories, narrowed gulp! I also went ahead and put these gems on a Google Map , so you can take these suggestions with you on the go! HINT: If I'm listing the restaurant or venue, that means I've been more than three times, and have had a good experience ie. There are plenty of places in Nashville that are worth a visit if you're a local and able to risk it. But not you, dear traveler. Not you. Alright folks What did I forget? Those of you who have been here recently, what did you enjoy the most? We didn't plan on traveling to Amsterdam because let's face it. The city has a reputation for two things: prostitution and legalized marijuana—two things that Patrick and I aren't exactly interested in seeking out. But my friend Dionna currently lives in Amsterdam and that fact alone was enough to make a detour from England to the Netherlands. And as it tuns out, the one place we hadn't planned on going became our favorite place of all. Amsterdam is a very old city, built on canals and waterways that can be flushed and cleaned in just under eight hours. There is no foul dirty-water smell like I've heard there is in Venice. The canals are in concentric half-moons, and act as streets—plus, all of the streets that run parallel to the canals. For example, Prinsengracht, the first canal, is also the street where you can find the Anne Frank Museum and as well as local restaurants and boutiques. Watch out for the bikes. I'm pretty positive I would have been killed had Dionna not yelled, 'You're in the bike lane! We stayed in Dionna's apartment. And you probably can't do much better than her apartment. But, I would highly recommend staying outside of the main canals and closer to the Rijksmuseum pictured above like we did. A quick Airbnb search yields this incredible apartment near the museumplein. More on why I love Airbnb soon. Also, keep an eye out for the Bakers and Roaster's daily salad—it's not on the menu, but is always displayed near the coffee bar. For Dinner: Envy on Prinsengracht in the canals. Make reservations in advance and save up your appetite. Then order the tasting menu and prepare to be wowed. Here's a photo of our first course of cucumber butter soup, steak tar tar, smoked salmon, and pumpkin puree. Dionna convinced us not to take a bike ride. She was right. The city is easily explored by foot and the stress of riding a bike and being 'that' tourist that causes an accident because she wants to stop and take a picture isn't worth the hassle. Also, we skipped the 'coffeeshops' that sell marijuana. And of course, none of this would have been possible without Dionna's generosity and hospitality. Thank you so much for introducing us to your city. It was better than we ever imagined. Six months ago, Patrick and I decided to plan a trip to Europe. We got excited. We saved money diligently. We searched Airbnb for the perfect place to stay in Paris and the most central location in Rome. Weeks in advance, Patrick woke up at three in the morning to buy tickets to a Tottenham Hotspurs Futbol match and he booked a wine tour in Tuscany, too. We researched restaurants and sights, museums and transit. We sent out pleas for recommendations and read Rick Steve's latest travel guide as if it were the Bible. Because we'd decided to go on a trip. And we'd decided to make it great. But expectations are joy-killers. So we tempered our excitement and realized there would be bumps and disappointments and frustrations along the way. We looked forward to the disasters—because we knew that great stories aren't made from perfect moments strung together like pearls on a string. But what we didn't expect was that what would go wrong wasn't Europe. It was us. Like any naive couple of humans, Patrick and I hoped that this trip would be magical, rejuvenating and life-giving. And don't get me wrong. There were plenty of moments of awe and wonder both at God's creation and each other. There were romantic dinners and bottles of wine and sunsets. There were history lessons and moments of quiet reflection and a break from the pressures of life and work at home. And we are, and always will be thankful for the time and the ability to see the world. But Patrick and I are the same in Europe as we are in Nashville. And so w hen we had our first disagreement in Europe on our very first night in Europe, it shocked us. Wasn't this supposed to be a dizzyingly romantic trip with fun and crazy stories and joy and hilarity? I wasn't going to magically become more patient, loving and generous just because we we'd traversed the Atlantic Ocean. And if that seems like a simple realization—it wasn't. It was painful. As it turns out, you don't need to plan a trip to find adventure. And you don't need a trip to be rejuvenated. Because if you can't find joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self control at home—you won't find it anywhere else. Because you are you wherever you go. I t's so easy to take a picture and smile. It's even easier to hide behind your camera, angry and frustrated, and snap a photo of a sunset to share on the internet. But photos on the internet don't do justice to the truth that is revealed through travel. I messed up our trip to Europe. Maybe not all of it. But enough to notice. And enough to need forgiveness. Travel isn't an escape. It's a mirror. And what it exposes isn't always pretty. It exposes the places within us that need changing. And it exposes our inability to change ourselves. But it also points to beauty so beyond our comprehension that you can realize that you are small AND you are loved. Across the continent and the countries we chose to see, there were beautiful landscapes, breathtaking architectural feats, and history so deep and wide that I couldn't swallow it all in one bite or two or three thousand. You show up, screw it up, and it still blesses you beyond your wildest dreams. I've been racking my brain on what brilliant topic I could use as my comeback to the whacky, weird, and uncomfortable world of blogging. How about we just start with some pictures? Sorry, just two easy steps. Use the Subway Without Fear. Stay Local. Four meals a day. Take your time. Do one thing you would normally do at home in the city. Arrive early doors open at and order, order and order some more. The daily tartine is always perfect, and I'm a huge fan of the croissant french toast, too just get a half-order so you have room for the rest! Crema Downtown — If you live in Nashville, you'll know why this goes at the top of my list. Perfect, smooth coffee every time the latte is my go-to. And don't miss out on the avocado toast. Walk to the top of the stone steps and you'll see a little trailhead for a 2. It's gorgeous, and full of friendly hikers. These small 'incubator' shops have helped launch some of the best local retailers. Check out White's Mercantile down the road as well. And miles. Love it every time. Arrive fed and caffeinated. This is the best hot fried chicken joint in Nashville. We love our hot chicken so much that every summer, we even have a hot chicken festival! So if you ask me, skip the barbecue and go straight for Hattie B's. Silly Goose East Nashville — cous cous and delicious sandwiches. Try the T-bird and the King Kong cous cous. Closed on Mondays. Germantown Cafe Germantown —love the miso salmon salad! Also, the interior was designed by my good friends, Regiven. Everything they make is homemade and delicious. Now, the brewery is up and running and everything is super delicious. Take a tour, enjoy live music The Taproom 12 South — awesome porch and beers on draft. This is where all the locals are. Great location and beautiful porch if it's a nice day! We love to eat at the bar and order as much as we can stomach. We've never tasted a single bad thing. Burger Up 12 South —our favorite place to be regulars. Done and Done. Lockeland Table East Nashville —wood fired pizzas, great cocktails, awesome value. Just a good ol' neighborhood spot. This place does Ramen like a pro. Cheap, awesome. Perfect after a hike at Percy Warner. Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams 12 South or East Nashville —Jeni's has more locations around the nation now than it used to, but the flavors are always changing so it's always fun to go see what they have in the freezer. HINT: Ask for a taste of an ice cream sandwich. They'll cut you a piece! Tempur Chocolate Germantown — this new spot has great truffles and an insane cup of hot chocolate. This is a place you must see a concert before you die, but unfortunately, most concerts sell out months in advance. Plan a trip around a concert you want to see, or simply pop in for a tour. Tours leave ever 20 minutes or so. Roberts Western World Downtown — the honky tonk to beat all honky tonks. Show up at 10 am, prepare to drink cheap beer, listen to some great bluegrass, and dance with the regulars. But I hear it's a must-see, so I would feel remiss if I didn't include it. Welcome to Amsterdam. A quick overview. Here are a few pictures of Dionna's sweet pad. Instead, go find my favorite painting of the peasant's potatoes. Walk down P. Hoofstraat a street outside of the canals and find Azzuro boutique. They carry Scotch and Soda , my favorite European clothing store, which originated in Amsterdam. Talk a walk through the red light district during the day. Despite the terrifying fact that prostitution is happening, and legally, in Amsterdam, I believe it's important to understand and see the truth about the world we live in—even if it's harsh. If you happen to be there on a Sunday, visit Hillsong Church Amsterdam. You won't regret it. And just for fun Let me explain. It was. And Europe was great until we showed up. It was all too much to take in. And that is what the love of God is like. It's like Europe.
