Welcome back! Jasmin here with more stories from last month. I tried to make it simple to start and play but if you have any questions or problems with it, contact me on jasminzukic2 gmail. Such a simple and elegant idea to use the snow as a white canvas and paint to your hearts content. When the snow melts the paint also disappears with it. One of the kids had an urge to do video editing and film some cool stuff. At the end of the session, the kid showed everyone what he created and I can easily say I enjoyed the video. You can see in the picture the reactions of the crew as they were watching that video for the first time. About me and my life. And he did it. And the people liked it very much. Remembering that story helps me relax and be more confident of my skills. It was quite challenging to remember which positions comes after another. When I would practice, I would just listen to my coach and follow her guidance. Without even thinking which move comes next and why. She helped me a lot. Pot and a wok pan. I can finally cook food that can last me more than a day. Up until now I had to cook every day sometimes even twice a day because my utensils were pretty small. Just enough for one or two meals. Interestingly, February was quite a weird month. One weekend was warm enough for me to go out and take my first proper bike ride away from the city, and the other weekend I was treated to go snowboarding in the mountains in the south. As for the bike trip, I went to the Odra river that is around km away from the city. So I decided to take one last good look at the map and go on without using the phone anymore. Of course I got lost. Even my wallet dropped out of my pocket. That path took me to the village called Pomorsko. It is a beautiful village with one wide road leading to the river and a boat that takes the cars across it. I remember only experiencing that kind of boat once in Croatia and I remember it dearly. I would like to go back that village when it gets warmer again. As a kid, I never went skiing or snowboarding. The most I would do at winters was sledding or skiing on a ghetto budget version of skis. We would make skis out of beer cribs. You know that long piece of plastic that you grab when you carry the crib. That would be our skis. Now you can imagine how I felt when I was treated to a snowboarding trip in the Polish mountains. I was happy and scared at the same time. I had a choice to take skis instead of a snowboard but the latter was much more appealing to me. As usual for the top, the slope was steeper and it was hard for me to get a hang of it. Needles to say, I fell countless times maybe I fell spectacularly around times. Not even my spirit. At the end of the day, I can say that I know how to snowboard. And I know that I need to start at some easier slopes! Scroll to top.

Poland is a strawberry empire, currently the 6th largest producer in the world and 2nd in the EU after Spain. But the major excitement is with the dessert strawberries. Starting with the second decade of May through about the current period in July you can buy fresh strawberries absolutely everywhere, from green markets to improvised stalls on the high street. There are several factors that make Polish strawberries such a feat. They are usually grown directly in the ground industrial fruit is usually grown on plastic foilage or even more sophisticated devices such as high-trellised plastic tubes. Polish strawberries are usually moderate in sweetness and have quite a crisp taste, especially early in the season. I usually enjoy the very first weeks best: that semi-sweet, crisp, subdued flavour is very refreshing. Here I opened four different wines to have a look at strawberries and wine matching. Gunderloch Riesling Kabinett Jean-Baptiste This is a semi-sweet almost semi-dry really , juicy, balanced, mineral Riesling from Germany. With May strawberries, the sweetness level is just fine but the wine lacks a bit of flavour and presence. In short I was a bit disappointed by this match. Perhaps better if the Riesling is younger and fruitier. Notes of caster sugar and vanilla should be a natural match for strawberries. This was tried with not very sweet strawberries early in the season, and if you take sweeter fruit, it can be even more of a problem. This older vintage is now showing in top form. Very typical nose of raisins, apricots, smoke and spice; fruit-driven on palate with moderate brown-sugar botrytis on end; finishes dryish and bitterish, inviting another glass. With strawberries, this is a good match if you follow the classic rule of serving a wine sweeter than its dessert. The delicate not-too-sweet strawberry flesh is slightly overpowered by the wine, plus there is no denying the contradiction between fresh fruit and botrytis that I observed in the Riesling above. Yet on a purely sensual level this works really quite well. All these people are Polish vignerons. All this changed in the last decade. Poland lies at the northern geographical limit for vine growing but with mean temperatures increasing in the last two decades and winters far less severe than they used to be, viticulture is now viable in a large part of the country. Vitis vinifera proper is and will in the foreseeable future remain a minority in Polish vineyards but is responsible for a good part of the better wines. Stylistically these wines are similar to Saxony or England, though far less consistent. Apart from the harsh climate, Polish wine still suffers from a very rudimentary winemaking technology and lack of experience. Many vintners are happy to make wine as an extra attraction on their agrotouristical farms. It will take a decade or two before substantial investment and education bring the general level of the wines up. In any case, at the time of writing only two of the estimated wineries have officially released wine for sale: there is a cornucopia of insane sanitary and tax regulations that make it virtually impossible for a small agricultural estate to comply with the requirements and obtain permission for sale. Consequently there is no chance to see any wines exported in the near future. And there would be no reason as the quantity is small enough to be entirely consumed by patriotic locals. During the 4th Polish Vintners Convention , we tasted over 70 wines from nearly 40 estates. The difficult vintage very rainy autumn influenced the quality heavily, and many wines suffered from dilution and unripeness, adding to the usual technical defaults such as overchaptalisation, oversulphuring, oxidation and instability at bottling. For the time being, some Polish wine label art appears below. Two decades ago, on Sunday 4th June , the first free elections since World War II were held, resulting in a landmass victory for Solidarity and effectively putting the Communist regime to an end. Among many far more serious things, we can enjoy a boundless diversity of wines, buy tea directly from Taiwan on the internet, develop private breweries and buy the latest music CDs in a range of high-street shops. Between 8 and pm today, all across Poland people raised a toast to our happy past and, hopefully, auspicious future. Slovenia was still part of a country called Yugoslavia, where wine could only be bottled and sold by state-controlled cooperatives. Now this historical estate in Slovenian Styria it was founded in the 12th century as a Benedictine abbey has been reprivatised and with a large investment, vineyards have been renewed and a new state-of-the-art cellar established. The first wines were released in and Dveri-Pax quickly confirmed its rank as one of the leading wineries in Slovenia. A little capricious at first, it really gains from some airing, showing a very clean minerality from the strong volcanic terroir. This honey is typical of southern Poland highlands. Goldenrod being one of the last plants to bloom in the early fall, this honey is rarely sold often being left for the bees to feed on during the winter. As many honeys it is renowned for its medicinal properties — for all ailments of the bladder, prostate, and kidney stones in this case. This specific goldenrod honey is from the Pszczeli Dar estate of Tomasz Jakubiec in the Tatra mountains. Typically light in colour, it shows a creamy liquid consistency and just exudes freshness. It is the flavour, however, that comes a real surprise. Fantastically intense, in a light register with notes of citrus and white flowers, and a moreish creamy, very slightly grainy texture. If you browse for goldenrod honey in the US it is typically described as a dark-coloured honey with a spicy taste — this Polish version is far lighter than that, and vaguely resembles rapeseed honey but is fruitier. Intensity of flavour and length of aftertaste are, for me, the hallmarks of a truly great honey. This one is really excellent. About the author. Happy holidays! Some nice festive drinking. Museum shots Pre-opening photos of the brand new Chopin Museum in Warsaw. Happy birthday, Fryc! Two hundred years ago from today, a shy boy was born. Black diamonds Black turnip — a great ancient vegetable. And the wines that go with it. The Return of the Queen Bow before the Polish strawberry. There are about vintners in Poland, operating on less than 1 hectare of vines on average and often on less than. Most of the plantings are post, and a very wide array of grape varieties are being tried at the moment. The resulting hybrids can be grown in climates where vinifera has substantial difficulties. Most of these varieties will be totally obscure to the casual wine drinker but readers from England or Canada might be familiar with white Seyval Blanc or red Rondo and Regent. There are also some specialist hybrids developed in Poland and other Central European countries, such as Bianca, Aurora, Hibernal and Sibera. With good viticulture and winemaking decent everyday wines can be obtained. Two decades of freedom It began in Poland. Goldenrod honey Never heard of it? Neither did I. I picked up this pot in an organic food shop, and am really happy I did.
