Jon and Rob do Ventoux and some of the Alps It went like this: Day one: La Routes du Ventoux. A typical 'sportive' in the French style, that is, what we in the UK call a road race Line up for the mass start to the sound of 80's MoR rock - nothing like some John Waite or Michael Bolton to make you want to ride as fast as you can out of there. Max effort for the first 22km to the foot of Ventoux, including a m climb that you hardly notice. Roll into Malaucene at a million miles an hour for the run up Ventoux. Robs racing experience came to the fore as he made his way up through the pack to the front. With perfect positioning he was ready to pounce, and launched himself off the front, passing the semi and retired pros. A few minutes into his final sprint he realized that he may have mad his move a touch too early - with km and a climb of Ventoux still to go I passed him 6-km from the top, tried nudging him with my foot a couple of times, but there was no reaction, except a mutter of 'urrghhh Ok, over the top, with a one hour 30 time for the climb, and begin the descent to Sault. Half way between the peak and Chalet Reynard there's a sonic boom from above - ah, Rob must have finally rolled over the top Seconds later he comes by with another couple of riders taking the shortcuts through thin air over the hairpins. There was a bit of a headwind all the way down which made the whole thing a bit of chore - no recovery before turning left at Sault and heading further down the hill to the bottom of the Col de Homme Mort. When we signed in on Saturday the organizer had talked through the route - Malaucene, up and over Ventoux, down to Sault, turn left, then over the Col de Homme Mort, 'C'est facile - you weel noot notice it'. It was horrible after 3 hours of bonkers effort. And there he was again; you have to marvel at Robs bike control - the ability to go so slowly up a hill without falling off is impressive After waking him up we caught a group at the second feed stop and climbed with them to the top of the col. One of the group says 'So, le Phoenix? When do you rise again? Sometime tomorrow, matey, when I'm tucking into my second glass of vin rouge. Top of the hill and the worlds longest descent - back towards Sault, and then down the Gorge du Nesque. This is a stunning route, clinging to the rock face, twisting along with tunnels along the way. It looked like there would be a bit of sprint at the end between the 8 or 10 of us, but the pace picked up on the uphill run to the town and most folk fell away. Here's my heart rate doing the climb - 90 minutes at theshold; just need to find something another 30 minutes to get near the record A day off was in order, then Tuesday, not having learned our lesson, we set out to trundle up Ventoux again. And again. The 'Cingles du Ventoux' is three times up the hill in a day by the three different routes - Bedion, Malaucene and Sault. A total, including the cycle from our hotel to the start, of m climb and km. Bedoin at 8am was pleasant. Cool enough and taken at a relaxed pace, getting us up there in just under 1-hr The run from Chalet Reynard was great - very clear skies and quiet on the top, and Rob did his obligatory sprint finish at m out from the summit. A cold quick drop down to Malaucene, down a coke, scoff an almond tart thing, do a U-turn. Up we go, doing a ascent from that side also - ten minutes slower than on Sunday, but again taking it fairly steadily. It was warmer and busier on the top this time; sprint finish Rob? Yep, thought so. Got the photo, and dropped off the other side down to Chalet Reynard. Pasta surprise for lunch at the Chalet, and the descent all the way down to Sault as the digestif. The ascent from Sault is fairly straight forward - less gradient, and you're starting from a higher point as well, so all looked good. The pain started when we passed Chalet Reynard for the last time - especially as the memory of the first time was still fresh, at this point 6 hours ago we were thinking 'this is all a bit easy Rob again, went for glory in the last couple of hundred meters, and almost misjudged it A stop at the Simpson memorial on the final way down, its surprisingly touching - covered with bodies and inner tubes and the like - a very 'live' reminder that folk have died trying to race bikes up and down mountains. The final descent to Bedion is stupid fast - 25 minutes or something to get back to the town, giving us a total ride time of around 7 hours. Totally totally knackered. Off to the Alps We wandered over to the alps on the Wednesday, and on the Thursday went out for a spin. All a bit stiff and slow to begin with, despite the immense quantities of pasta, steak frites and vin rouge we'd consumed, purely in an attempt to recover from the race and the cingles of course. From Guillestre we headed north along the old valley road to Briancon - bit of an effort as it was 45km and m rolling climb into a head wind. Much more Robs thing than mine. Early lunch in Briancon - Europes highest town, or something, and then turn left following the Col D'Izoard signs. This was a great little climb - m up the valley to the top and it deserves its reputation as one of the most picturesque cols. Its a long fast descent back into Guillestre with a couple of picture stops, where we again tested the restorative powers of 'du impression, sil vous plait' Friday, the weather was looking a bit dodgy, so it was a drive to Jaisier followed by a leisurely m belt up to the Col de la Bonnette and back. At something around m its the highest point the Tour de France reaches and perhaps the highest col, although there seems to be some dispute. Anyway, in an attempt to get the record a stupid little ring road has been built around the summit. It was icy cold though, and we had some sleety rain on the descent - all fine, but could have been unpleasant if we'd been up there longer. Just a spin we agreed - up to Risoul from Guillestre - about m climb. Rob belts off and here we go The thing is, after you've been doing 2, 3 and m climbs all week you start to think that you can sprint a mere m. We pushed stupid hard all the way up, finishing the week with an almost vomit inducing sprint into a deserted ski resort. Thank god no one was there to see us, otherwise we'd be institutionalized Not bad for a weeks work - 12,m climb over km, 22 hours or so active cycling time, something close to 19, calories burnt with a race and a cingles thrown in. Perhaps a beach holiday somewhere flat next year? Re: Jon and Rob do Ventoux and some of the Alps Maybe you should try and push yourselves next time But seriously, I'm now very, very, very scared at the prospect of going for a ride with either of you. Can you email me the photos Jon and I'll publish your ace report to the Interweb. I rather enjoyed the 'Jon Hill: alps training camp' and have almost learned how to climb properly now. But anyway, thanks Jon for a fantastic week, getting to see Provence architecture and cycling up some of the nicest cols in Europe who can ask for more? Post by Richard » Wed Sep 16, pm There is actually a fourth way up the Ventoux, but it's an off-road trail. Board index All times are UTC.

With coke, you go home in perfect shape. That's how you get sharper while suppressing your appetite. Weight is the enemy in cycling, not.
