Buying coke online in Ohrid
Yesterday I accidentally left out one of our best stops…. All their food is great, but the Pannukakku is out of this world good! The cinnamon swirl Nisu cardamom toast is also amazing, as are the cinnamon rolls. Our next stop in the Upper Peninsula was the amazing Bond Falls. From there we made our way to our cute little Airbnb cabin near Rapid River for the next two nights. It was cozy and had everything anyone could ever need except for wifi and TV. As ghost towns go it was a disappointment…it was actually a very well-preserved historical site from when iron smelting was done back in the s. And the Stonington Peninsula is where I spent a good bit of time at two free campsites a few years ago when I was being a nomad. At the end of August and beginning of September, thousands of Monarch butterflies gather there to rest up for the long flight across Lake Michigan. Sadly we were a little too early to see them but the lighthouse can be climbed. It has very intricate ironwork steps. We went into Manistique for ice cream at Yoo-Par mini golf course. It was very good ice cream and they offer flights of ice cream, similar to flights of beer at a brewery! I was very excited to end our travels with 3 days of camping at my very favorite campsite of all time…. Lyman Lake Dispersed Campsite 3! Cindy was noticably less excited to camp. In fact she was dreading it! I had camped there several years ago with my friends Deb and Bobbi. Bobbi and I had a nice swim in the lake. I think the last time I went swimming was in that same lake, 6 or 7 years ago! There are lots of giant trout visible in the water. We had a choice of cod, whitefish, walleye, perch or bluegill! The others chose walleye and cod. Somehow when I got up to go to the bathroom in the night I managed to trip over the lip of the tent door and fall on my face. I had a couple small cuts and scrapes on my forehead, nothing too obvious or painful. The poor things were crowded into a very small outdoor pen and the single nest was really hard to reach and backbreaking…it required bending way over and using a rake to bring the eggs close enough to pick up. We were getting about 15 eggs a day and giving them away to everyone Cindy knew! We were so glad when the neighbor returned about a week later. We were thoroughly sick of chickens. And eggs. I had a couple more meetups with friends after that, and soon was making my way home. I was not looking forward to the 26 hour journey. As often happens, flights were delayed. My 8 hour layover in Philly turned out to be an agonizing 10 hours. I sat at the gate and walked around; I was going to have a meal but the restaurants were all full at 6 pm when I went looking for a good place. A little later a couple were eating what I thought was a takeout hamburger from the restaurant I wanted to try so I asked if the hamburger was good. It was delicious! Later he kiddingly asked me if I really just lived in the airport and cadged food from unsuspecting travelers! Then the 7 hour flight to London Heathrow, which arrived too late for my flight home to Tirana, which was the last flight of the day. But that flight had been delayed too! I had anticipated a mad dash for that flight so I asked for wheelchair assistance. They whisked me off to the tram for Terminal 5 and I got another ride through Security at the other side and made it to the gate just as the last passengers were boarding. My favorite taxi driver was waiting for me in Tirana and drove me home and even carried my two 51 suitcases up the stairs for me! What a good guy. I was there for nearly 7 weeks. I got the chance to catch up with lots of old friends and a few cousins, do some traveling and even tent camped for a few nights! My oldest friend Cindy of 72 years! One of the first things I did was start ordering goodies from Amazon. LOTS of goodies! The goodies arrived daily…wow, like the best Christmas ever because unlike getting gifts from others, this was stuff I knew I wanted and liked! I had a huge problem with jetlag after going through six time zones. For the first six days I got a total of only 14 hours sleep! Right off the bat on my second day there I had sudden uncontrollable bathroom issues…uggghhhh! No fun at all. I tried to eat organic as much as possible but I admit I did fall in love with keto flour tortilla wraps. There are no keto bread products here in Albania so being able to eat sandwiches and use the wraps as hamburger buns was great! Cindy has a mommy deer that often drops her two kids off in the morning and leaves them til afternoon! Sadly by the time I left, one baby had disappeared. I hated the crowds but it was pretty interesting. Then we visited the refurbished Central Railway Station. The architecture is very grand and gorgeous! Way too people-y for me! We finally found a spot to parallel park on a side street. Pure luck. Luckily they all turned out to be clean and comfortable! One Booking. It had comfortable cots and turned out to be fine except it was very close to the road and cars going by were noisy. On the way to the Keweenaw Peninsula we drove through a kooky sculpture park called Lakenenland, where a guy makes all kinds of metal sculptures out of junk. We went all around the Keweenaw Peninsula, toured Ft. We both got the beef stroganoff daily special which was amazing Definitely not keto so I only ate a few of the noodles. When we asked for the check, the waitress told us it had already been paid! Some guy named David came in to pick up a To Go order and paid for our meal!! Thanks Dave, whoever you are! We gave the waitress a big tip to pay it forward. The next morning we went back and got some of their amazing pie to go. Well the trip back was pretty hellish but at least I got in the day before the big computer glitch, so it could have been worse! I only slept 4 hours the night before the trip. I guess he thought I was a stupid tourist. The two hour bus trip to the airport took nearly three hours. It was miserably hot in the bus. It took 40 minutes to go the last mile, stopping for 5 minutes, then creeping forward one car length. Of course being Albania, dozens of cars sailed past us on the left and right on this two lane road, which caused a massive gridlock at the turn into the airport. The Tirana airport was a madhouse for some unknown reason. The flight to Heathrow was delayed 2 hours. Once I got to Heathrow, the instructions to get to the futuristic looking driverless pods were faulty and I ended up walking all over the place trying to find them. The hotel was huge and I had to walk a really long ways to my room but it was nice. The flight to Philadelphia was also delayed about two hours but I had a five hour layover there so that was okay. The dinner was chicken cacciatore with mashed potatoes and peas so all I ate was the chicken and I dribbled red sauce on my white shirt. Funny how a little starvation can affect your principles! In Philadelphia, the flight to Detroit was delayed. And delayed again. Then they announced a gate change that seemed like a mile away. The shin splints were starting to kick in by then. I could send texts only, and only if I was on wifi which only worked when I was inside the terminal. Then I waited. And waited. I thought she must have gotten into an accident or something! I texted Cindy several times too. I got another girl to call for me but Cindy said her phone never rang. Later she texted again to ask if we found each other. Well Cindy had been driving all over the airport trying to find me. She asked an airport worker and he directed her to the other terminal! She did pass by my area a few times but apparently they were the times when I was inside the terminal trying to text people! She offered to call Cindy, and got through! When I came back out, there she was! Worst trip ever for me. I took some melatonin and got to bed around midnight but only slept 4 hours. Helloooo jetlag! The next night I only slept from 10 til 2 a. So we got there around and stayed til nearly 10 pm! Kathy tells the best stories and we laughed til our cheeks hurt. Or ten. It was an Amber Alert. I guess I signed up to get them two years ago. After the second one I turned the phone completely off but never did get back to sleep. After this I have a few days with no social obligations. I only brought a few clothes and desperately need to go to a thrift shop! I think I waited about a week too long though. Last week I needed to go to 9 different places! I was exhausted by the time I finished with that one stop! Once I withdraw my US Dollars, I have to go a currency exchange booth to get Euros to pay my rent and lek for everything else. Instead of dealing through the rental agent, I asked the landlord if I could have a two year lease directly with him. He said yes! And my rent is staying the same! I love my apartment, and not just for the view. Now I have to pay in cash, in euros, and this month I had to go to town 3 days in a row before I caught the agent in his office. I have decided that when I return, I want to rent a teeny tiny car and travel around camping and seeing more of Albania. It seems impossible to find quality camping equipment here so I had found off-brand knockoff tent, sleeping bag and inflatable sleeping pad on Amazon that looked and sounded like they would be good. The thing I really like about the tent is that it has three doors and two vestibules. It takes me awhile to get down to ground level these days. And the rainfly can be removed to use the tent as a screen room, with space for two lawn chairs and a little table! Very ingenious. I leave July 17 but have a 13 hour layover in London getting a hotel room and a 5 hour layover in Philadelphia. Last night was pretty exciting! First, I was propped up on my bed reading when all of a sudden, fireworks were going off right in front of my apartment! Albanians love fireworks and often have displays for birthdays and other special occasions but this was the first time I could watch fireworks from my bed! A little while later I heard a crowd roar. I stepped out onto my balcony and the Bonaparte Restaurant next door had set up two huge outdoor screens and was showing the EUFA Albania-Italy soccer game! I could have sat on my balcony and watched the game! Except of course for the fact that I have no interest in sports whatsoever. I went back to reading my book. The Albanian team made history with the fastest first goal ever…. But they ultimately lost to Italy Afterwards, quite a few cars went by blowing their horns but I guess those must have been some of the Italian tourists in town. Anyway there was no sleep for me until well after midnight. On June first it was like a switch had been flipped…. Then I stay holed up in the air-conditioning for the rest of the day. I have been having a lot of problems regulating the temperature in the apartment. My comfort range is between 75 and…well…. It seems like I should be able to set the thermostat and leave it but it will range from 71 to 79! So I end up constantly fiddling with the settings. It was not fun getting it home on the overcrowded bus. I could not believe the difference it makes in my comfort level! There are now seven beautiful sailboats anchored in the bay. I love live-aboard sailing. I want this pretty catamaran. Another harbinger of summer along with bumper to bumper traffic and overcrowded buses are all the loungers and umbrellas covering practically every inch of the beach. There are a few small areas of public beach left but most of the beach is private. Albanians and Europeans eat dinner late and afterward they like to stroll along the beach promenade. Our water was out for 2. But due to my girl scout training, I keep eight of the 3 gallon jugs of tap water on hand so I was fine. They were upgrading the water supply system but things went a little sideways when someone hooked the pipes up wrong and there was a tremendous explosion of super high pressure water that flooded ground floor restaurants and reached as high as 3rd story windows! Luckily it was not near my apartment! Our week in Ohrid is drawing to a close. We sure have enjoyed it! Ohrid would be a strong contender if I ever get priced out of Albania. The 10 denar bill is only worth 18 cents! Definitely back to strict Keto the moment I get home! We walked about a mile along the lakefront promenade to Old Town yesterday. There was this car rental place on the sidewalk….. What a great concept! We walked around the shops, bought a few clothes and treats and had lunch at a place called Gostilnica Neim. They use one of only two exact replicas of the original 15th century Gutenburg presses in existence! I got a quick demonstration. Virginia and I are kitty-sitting for friends in Ohrid, North Macedonia. We took a city bus to the inter-city bus station in Vlore, then on to Tirana 2. From there we had to take a taxi to a different bus station on the other side of the city. Then on a big bus 3 more hours to Ohrid. After awhile he called out an oriental-looking kid and said he was supposed to have a visa to enter. John met us at Ohrid and we took a taxi to the police station. You have to register your lodgings with the police within 48 hours of entering the country so we had to fill out a form and keep a copy with our passport. It seems strange to see grass everywhere! They have free lakefront beanbag seating! The first night we went to the Irish Pub! After dinner the waiter brought us glasses of schnapps! What the heck! The black kitty is 18 years old and very friendly. We just got back from brunch at The Lion Restaurant. French toast with sweetened cream cheese and maple syrup, smothered with blueberry sauce…ohhhh my. I wanted to lick the plate when I was done. On Saturday we decided to just continue exploring Old Town and not try to see the rest of the island, since we were only there for the two days. So we did more wandering around, shopping and eating. It started to rain so we ducked into a restaurant for a coffee that turned out to be lunch. We shared a few appetizer entrees…grilled sardines and a feta cheese baked inside Phyllo dough thingy. So we shared all three of the desserts they offered. Chocolate mousse, baklava and walnut pie. All amazing. By this time my diet had been completely abandoned. They gave us a free sample of the kumquat liqueur! By the end of this trip I might need an intervention. And they were really BIG! Our Airbnb host Alexandra suggested Pergola Restaurant for dinner and it was a winner! There was live music and the food was terrific! I had a traditional dish called Stifado tender beef with pearl onions in a tomato sauce. Jessica had Sofrito beef in garlic sauce and Kelly had moussaka. We shared one ouzo, just to see what it tasted like. Lord help me, it tasted like yum. There were loads of these beautiful blue dragonflies everywhere…odd because unlike most dragonflies, they folded their wings when they landed! It looked too far and too steep for me. Here are some pics from Jessica. Andy stopped the car along the side of the road to cut some flowers for us all! Ever had a taxi driver do that for you? We went through Llogara which has a cool little microclimate with beautiful pine woods that reminded me of Northern Michigan! They stayed in the same hostel as I did in Shkoder all last summer though I never met them there! They had to leave Albania because their one year free visa was up. Kelly, Jessica and I got picked up by our favorite taxi driver Andy at 6 a. He drove us 2. He loved them so I told him to keep them. On arrival we took a taxi to the edge of Old Town and walked to meet our Airbnb hostess, Alexandra. The building is from the s! There were 3 big cruise ships in port so about 5, tourists in town and the streets were teeming with people. On Saturday, there was just one ship with around 2, cruisers. We dropped our luggage off and went out to find some brunch. Her family owns the two stores that sell souvenirs and booze…. I, who seldom drink anything, now have a liquor collection. And this really cute little fishy coin purse. We came back and dropped the goodies off and went back out to explore Old Town. We found the main square in Old Town. Unlike most of the Balkans, Corfu was never ruled by Ottomans, but by Venetians. It started to sprinkle so we stopped to have a coffee. The owner brought us large glasses of fresh-squeezed orange juice as well! After awhile a really handsome man came up and started chatting and we ended up spending the whole evening with he and his partner! Greg and his husband Steve were visiting from Australia. They were hilarious! We had many more than a few sips. Adventures in eating AND drinking; will wonders never cease! We continued to drink and drink until we closed that place down, then went to another restaurant and drank until they kicked us out at 1 a. The guys walked? And no hangover this morning! I was awakened at 7 a. I needed new xrays so I went to a clinic on a Monday. I walked in with no appointment and walked out, xrays in hand, less than 30 minutes later! I had texted the clinic via WhatsApp about getting an appointment and they called me as I was exiting the xray clinic. It was a pretty strange conversation! She: Come today at She: Okay come any day to Me: I could come tomorrow. She: No, not tomorrow. Me: How about Thursday? She: No, not Thursday. Come Wednesday. Alrighty then, Wednesday it is! I have great veins but they roll away when the needle comes at them, or just stop giving blood shortly after being poked. So I needed to drink a lot of water beforehand to plump them up. I texted them and was told to wait at a nearby store and someone would come and get me. It got a little bizarre. We went to an apartment building nearby. Still no sign for the clinic. In a couple of minutes, she texted to take the elevator to the 7th floor. She was waiting as I got off the elevator. The nurse got 65cc of blood in one stick! Did it work? Does anyone know what this plant is? The red flowers look like bottle-brushes! On Sunday we took a two hour cruise on the Vltava River which is the longest river in the Czech Republic. A good bit of the cruise was spent waiting for locks to raise or lower the water level! It was really good though; the beef was fork-tender. On Monday morning my friends had an early flight and had to leave at a. I had ordered a bunch of supplements, Command hooks, stevia and other hard-to-find items from Amazon and Carolyn brought them over for me. It was like Christmas in April! And I regretted it. The food was awful! Security at the Prague airport is really different. You go through Security at each gate, not a big central location for all flights. I flew on Wizz Air which is a bargain basement low cost airline, and they charge for every little thing. Only an underseat bag is included in the fare. Want water on the plane? I just got back from 3 days in Prague in the Czech Republic! An old friend from Asheville was taking a Viking River Cruise with a Prague add-on and she invited me to join her group and share her room with me! It was a long travel day though. On arrival in Prague I had some rather vague directions from the hotel website: Take the bus, then the 26 tram. I found the bus fairly easily and it went to a central station and dumped everyone off. I wandered around a bit and found a tram station, got directions on where to wait and it came along soon. So I got off at the next stop and had to walk almost a mile to the hotel. On the way into town there were lots of tulips and big beautiful lilac bushes in full bloom. I met up with Carolyn and her friend Jo and I was starving so we went to one of the hotel restaurants for a snack. Uh oh! You get a 1. You push a button and a brick wall becomes a secret door! The whole place was brick, with beautiful arched brick ceilings. There also an additional secret room accessed by pulling out a certain book on a bookshelf. It was tiny, with just a sofa, small table and 2 chairs. There are no menus. They give you about 10 Rorsach inkblots to choose from, and the one that appeals most is the right drink to fix whatever ails you! They do ask if you have any allergies or if you dislike anything. I felt like saying I dislike all liquor but I guess that would have defeated the purpose. We made our choices:. They were all very different! The waiter came over and explained what was in each drink and they were all kind of oddball…things like beetroot juice, egg white, smoky tequila. It was very fun and probably the highlight of our weekend! Reservations are recommended. We went first to the Old Town Square. It was close to so we hurried over to the famous Astronomical Clock along with a mob of other tourists. I must say it was a big disappointment to us. On the hour, figures on each side pull a chain that rings a gong. I heard others also expressing disappointment. We tried some of the food from the street vendors. We had Prague Ham, whole hams rotisserie grilled over a wood fire…. It was fantastic! Juicy and tender. Or both! The whole rest of the weekend I wanted to go back for more ham and trdelnik! Our next stop was the famous Charles Bridge. It was a 7 minute walk from the bus stop so a little far for my mobility-challenged friends but we took it slow and eventually made it! Along the way we went into a little store that sold nothing but wood items and I bought the only souvenirs of the trip, which are very thin laser-cut wood ornaments. Those are live plants in the window. Then we decided to just get an Uber back to the hotel so we walked up a side street to a better place to get picked up. Along the way was this beautiful choir practice coming from one of the buildings! Yesterday I had a bunch of chores scheduled until my Italian friend Arash texted an offer to drive south of the city for lunch and a little hike. Chores be damned; I was outta there in 45 minutes! Travel in a CAR; woo hooo! The beaches here are really beautiful. Mostly gravel, not sand, but with gin-clear turquoise water. We stopped at a unique little seaside restaurant where the fresh catch of the day is displayed on ice. You choose the fish or seafood you want and they cook it for you! It was delicious though, and came with family-style hand cut fries and salad. I guess I was too hungry to remember to take a photo of the food. Then we continued up the road and parked at Pasha Liman Lagoon for our little hike. But he was very kind and let me set the pace and how far to go. We passed a man herding a little flock of sheep, with some really cute tiny babies. Kelly and I took the ferry from here to Brindisi on Saturday. We sat in the dining room and played a marathon of Rummikub the whole time. As we were coming into Brindisi, a super outgoing American woman came up to talk and ask if we were going to Bari, and if we wanted to share a taxi to the train station. She was with a Vietnamese-American who had a darling toy German Spitz dog in her backpack. She jokingly said something about staying with us if they missed the last train out. At that point it looked like there was plenty of time to make it but in the end the ferry arrived too late, so we told them they could come stay at our 2 bedroom Airbnb. We sat around and shared stories awhile then hit the bed. I slept on the sofa. We went to breakfast at her favorite Cafe and had cornettos…. Then she showed us all over town. Peppino Campanella He does beautiful metal and glass light sculptures that we saw all over the town! Then we continued on the train to Bari. We walked around Old Town and then took a bus to Ikea. It was very crowded so we shuffled around the store with the mob of shoppers. I really wanted a knife set but I was afraid it would get confiscated by Security at the port. Kelly got a small shelving unit that was a little awkward to carry, plus a few other goodies. I got a really awful piece of pizza and Kelly got a hot dog and some weird little round French fries. While waiting on the train platform I somehow stepped on my shoelace and down I went! Cement is not very forgiving. It hurts a lot! Yesterday we had to leave our Airbnb by but got an extension until We went out to the ferry dock then because we read that you could store luggage there. We hopped a bus from the port to the train station and got the luggage stowed. Then we set out to find Old Town. We walked around Old Town but never found the main square with the cathedral. We had some really good hamburgers for dinner! Then back to the train station to retrieve the luggage and catch another bus back to the port. They say to check in 2 hours before the 11 pm sailing and that we could get right on but that was a big fat lie! We went straight to our cabin and Kelly crawled up into the top bunk and went to sleep. I read for awhile. The ship left more than an hour late. We walked 5 miles that day! Gee I normally feel very virtuous if I walk a mile or so! Americans are such rubes about public transportation! Why does it rain on weekends only??! I got my Residency renewal submitted yesterday. My attorney says now it will be about a two month wait for approval but I should get a provisional approval quickly. That will alow me to stay in country past my March 27 renewal date. Now I am wondering, if I leave to go to Prague for a few days in April, will they let me back in? I have a really cool app called MarineTraffic. If I see a ship or boat in the harbor I can look on the app and find out a bunch of information about it. The owner told us horse is out of season right now. He put together a huge family style feast for the 8 of us that included a ton of salads, homemade fresh pasta with huge shrimp and one with beef, and roast beef on a bed of pureed potatoes. The roast beef was fork-tender and delicious. I tried a teeny fork full of the pasta and it was really good too, and even got the approval of our Italian friend Arash. They kept plying us with their own homemade raki, which is the local hooch. Lots of people here make their own from all kinds of fruit. But this stuff was gooooood, so good! They dug up the whole cement floor with jackhammer, then poured a brand new floor. Then they had to dig out the cement walls for electric lines, outlets, etc. The noise is incredible day after day but they do kindly wait until 9 a. The other day I found pieces of cement on my floor…. I looked up at the ceiling and nothing was wrong. I saw a guy and brought him back to my place and showed him my wall. He left and came back immediately with a trowel full of wet cement and patched up the wall in no time! He was the general contractor for this whole building so he might know that crew…or maybe that space next door belongs to him! Strawberries are starting to show up in the produce stands. A friend and I are talking about taking the ferry from here to Brindisi, Italy and staying a couple days. One must-see attraction would be the Ikea store in Bari, a 1. I may need to take a BIG suitcase. Usually the street dogs pay no attention to anyone. And winter is our rainy season too! I am going back to the US Michigan this summer, if they can avoid getting into any wars. July 17 — September 4. I am working on renewing my Residency. Silly me, to think that just because they got the account number right for a One Time Deposit, that they would have also fixed the original problem. I learned something last week. Albania and Ecuador drug cartels work very closely together. Drugs are smuggled from Ecuador into Albania in banana shipments! So we have lots and lots of bananas to sell. I also learned that there are only four movie theaters in all of Albania! None of them are here. A couple times last summer there were outdoor showings of really old American movies. I solved my overflowing bath drain issue myself. I bought some liquid and granular drain cleaners. So I decided to get a plumber. I went to the tiny hardware store 3 blocks away. Then I asked about getting the plumber to come. He said to text his son on WhatsApp. She left and then I asked via Google Translate, if I bought a stepladder, would his son bring it to me. He said yes. So I had to carry the darn thing 3 long blocks home! I WhatsApped the plumber and he called back on video chat. He kept asking questions in his version of English, but nothing he said made any sense! He thought I was an idiot and kept rolling his eyes and shaking his head at my stupidity. I thought he told me to flush the toilet so I did, and it was fine. I tried again. I flushed that sucker 7 times in a row and it was FINE!! I guess the granules just needed extra time to do their job. They placed supports for a balcony and dug up the whole cement floor and replaced it, and are constantly grinding away at the walls. Good thing I never get headaches! Close Menu Home. This raft gets hauled across the lake! Home Sweet Home! Tags Michigan Upper Peninsula. There was a large flock of flamingos flying around the lagoon but were too far away for a photo. That tiny pier in the center is the ferry dock in front of my apartment! And this is her buddy; they often hang out together. They are not strays. Waiting to get off the ferry. Is that a frog? Or Homer Simpson? New balcony for next door. Subscribe Subscribed.
