If you watched Netflix's smash drug-smuggling biopic Narcos and thought, 'That looks fun, I might dress as Pablo Escobar for Halloween' rather than, 'What an awful man', then you'll probably love Ghost Recon: Wildlands. The tenth iteration of the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series — Tom died in by the way, so we're not sure how much input he actually had on this one — is the first to go open-world and sets you loose in a huge Boliva run by a drug kingpin with awesome tattoos, named El Sueno. Your quartet of Ghosts are tasked with infiltrating the various ranks of the coke trade's sniffy glitterati drugerati? Expect a colourful selection of targets featuring everything from the cocaine-funded equivalent of musician Pitbull to a selfie-obsessed assassin. The team picks apart every aspect of the business from influence to production, smuggling and security, before you take on El Sueno's four main commanders. You're free to do that in any order you want, as with most missions in the game. Wildlands encapsulates the multiplayer chaos of GTA Online 's heists and mixes it with the stealth and tactics that we've come to know the series for, but all of that depends on who you choose to roll out with. Your AI team is fairly competent: you can mark-up enemies and command the team to deliver hugely satisfying simultaneous kills while looking down your gun's iron sights or through binoculars — or when you're much further away, perhaps sat in your pants, and using a drone. However, the gang isn't quite so sharp when it comes to getting into vehicles. You'll regularly have to ditch your brothers-in-arms after painfully waiting for them to join you in a car, boat or helicopter. Thankfully they do magically warp into your transport soon afterwards, which reduces frustration, but this does seem like a bumbled fix. You'll need to do A LOT of driving in Wildlands as the map is absolutely enormous with a huge variety of areas, from lush jungles to snowy mountains and even desert plains. Sadly the cars tend to feel fairly arcadey and wobbly to drive, but thankfully Ubisoft has nailed dirt bikes as well as the physics on the helicopters — which you'll want to grab whenever you can. Everything we've described up until now is brilliant — albeit repetitive — fun. But aside from gaining new elite weapons from each boss you cap, hoovering up gun attachments and powering up skills, it can get a bit samey. This is where Ghost Recon's online co-op has its chance to shine. Throughout the game, you're encouraged to enlist other players to join your squad — but if you can only find one, you'll lose your other two AI characters. If you can find someone you know to play with, or failing that, a normal sane person you can communicate with, then Wildlands has the potential to be a lot of fun. When missions go awry and you have to 'go loud' and maim everyone around you while desperately trying to shoot down helicopters with your grenade launcher, it's chaos. Fun, coke-y chaos. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands review — shhhh, ffs. However, a large bulk of Ghost Recon: Wildlands' missions require stealth, and even in the single-player game, you don't quite feel equipped to nail the level of sneaking required while maintaining your patience. This whole situation is worsened tenfold when you play online, as your co-op chums regularly set off alarms, mow down enemies without silencers and basically bowl through enemy bases with all the subtlety of Keith Lemon with a megaphone. One of our co-op allies blew the mission seven times in a row after failing to realise the main objective was 'don't be discovered'. At one stage we were rushing to plant recording devices in one dealer's home before this clown could mess things up, which is the complete opposite of what online co-op should be. After we'd successfully planted the devices, retreated to a safe distance and flashed multiple 'regroup' commands on the screen, he suddenly came to life, bowled into the mansion, shot at everyone with a large machine gun and blew the mission for an eighth time. We've all been there, we've all been that bumbling fool messing up the team's chances of winning in various online multiplayer games, but when Wildlands tasks you with getting through missions and taking down druggies, online simply players hold you back more often than not. Verdict: If you can find a team of friends to enlist into your squad, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands is, well, wild. However, the sheer amount of travelling, planning and stealth required for numerous missions doesn't lend itself to online co-op with random drop-in muggles. But steaming through an endless line of ridiculous drug kingpins in a big world with an even bigger arsenal is intoxicating fun that'll keep you coming back for another hit.
