If you want to stop emotional eating — Cuba is the place for you! There are no packets of chips; there is no chocolate well, except locally made chocolate in Baracoa ; you have to look hard for icecream, and when you do find it you have to be prepared to eat mL; it is rare to find anything other than Cuban soft drink, none of which is diet if you do find Coke, it is twice the price and no Coke Zero. Instead, what is on offer if you know where to look — not easy are home-made snacks that turned out to be very interesting! Chocolate Baracoa — handmade dark chocolate. My favourite was sweetened with honey rather than sugar and included a little cinnamon. Churros Bayamo — essentially long donuts — the same as churros in Australia. This cone of churros with condensed milk and powered sugar cost 20 cents. I reckon there is a market in Cuba for foodie tours….
14 things I wish I’d known before visiting Cuba

Havana We eventually made it to Havana, where we spent two nights one full day. We took a walking tour around the city and our guide explained everyday life in Cuba. Cuba also has other supermarkets with a wider supply of goods but they were pretty low on stock. Besides a bit of culture shock, Havana is a beautiful city, and much bigger than I expected! Your host provides you with breakfast and give you tips for your holiday. No longer in the city, we went on a horse ride arranged by the lady from our casa particular which included seeing how organic Cuban cigars, coffee and rum are made, and visiting a lake. We cycled down a very steep hill to the Cueba del Indio cave on our second day. We already had sore bums from the horse riding and it was so hot which I am not complaining about- just saying. Yes, with our bikes…. Safety The Cuban people are some of the friendliest people I have ever met. They are very welcoming, always happy to help and like to say hello to passers by on the street. Out of a population of 11 million people, 6 million are police mainly plain clothes , and my friend and I felt extremely safe walking around Cuba- day or night. Trinidad, was my favourite place in Cuba. We stayed in a casa in the city for two nights and then a hotel directly on the beach for four nights, but still got a taxi back into the city in the evenings. Spanish in Cuba If there was ever a time to brush up on your Spanish, this is it. The younger Cuban people speak English, the older people not so much. Being able to speak Spanish helped us with getting around and everyday life in the casas. The locals do have a thick Cuban accent, but even a tiny bit of Spanish would make a huge difference to your trip. Would I recommend Cuba? Yes, yes and yes! I loved the beautiful landscapes, the dancing culture and most of all how friendly the locals are. Whilst no one asked me for anything at all, I did bring a few extra toiletries with me and the locals were extremely grateful for when offered. Wow, what an adventure! Anywhere with a dancing culture is a must to visit. And your hotel on the beach sounds incredible. Amazing photos and great insight, yet again! Thanks for the post Alisa x x x. Like Like. My brother went there last year and he told me it was literally traveling back in time. The photo you posted reminded me of the car they rented during the trip. It was the exact model but a flamingo color. They told it was more fun exploring the city in a scooter. Because most people over there are very basic. You could hardly see anyone with cellphones on there hands. Hope you had good time. I love your post and great pictures. While reading it I learn new things about my own country, about cities I havent yet been to. Great post!!! Email Address:. Website Powered by WordPress. Yes, with our bikes… Not so impressed Hmm… Safety The Cuban people are some of the friendliest people I have ever met.
