It's provides an extensive list of articles, resources, FAQs and reports from expats living in Belize. Belize offers several coastal communities for expats and digital nomads seeking a tropical lifestyle. While San Pedro on Ambergris may not be to your liking due to noise and pollution, Placencia and Dangriga are often recommended for their tranquil settings and proximity to the ocean. Placencia, with its picturesque canal front and long sandy beach, is known for its laid-back atmosphere and thriving ex-pat community. Dangriga, the cultural hub of Belize, boasts a vibrant Creole community and easy access to the Mayan ruins and the stunning St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park. As for the cost comparison, Placencia generally has a higher cost of living than Dangriga due to its popularity among expats and tourists. Regarding your inquiry about the cost of drugs in Belize, it's essential to note that importing prescription medications without a prescription from a Belizean doctor may result in legal consequences. While it's impossible to provide an accurate estimate without knowing the specific medications you require, it's recommended to consult with the Belizean Embassy or Consulate in your home country or contact a local pharmacy for information on importing your medications legally. Additionally, some expats have found success in purchasing medications from the pharmacy in Mexico, which is only a short boat ride away from some parts of Belize. Another option is to explore online pharmacies that ship to Belize, but be sure to research their legitimacy and safety before making a purchase. I am also curious as to whether it makes more economic sense to rent or purchase in Belize I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer an objective comparison of the pros and cons of those two locations, as well as any others we have not yet considered given that we know we want to live near the ocean , as well as anyone who can shed some light on the relative cost of drugs in Belize since OHIP won't cover the cost of prescriptions filled outside the Province, and we both take some pretty expensive medications. You can find seafront or bay front lots. The Hopkins area is another good option to consider if you're looking for seafront. Punta Gorda is way down south, but has it's own charm. The Corozal area, Cerros Peninsula, and Sarteneja are options on the Bay saltwater in the northern part of the country. The Cerros peninsula has a more small village feel while being close enough to Corozal for convenience. The Sarteneja Rd has been undergoing major upgrades, but it's still pretty remote in that area. With any seafront property, be aware that your survey will show the 66 foot reserve area sometimes referred to as the Queen's lands. There are also lots of fresh and brackish water lagoons and rivers that offer waterfront property inland. Rent or purchase depends on your finances and long term goals. Keep in mind that rentals can be limited. We don't take any regular meds, but most find the pharmacies reasonable. Many medications that require a prescription in our home country can be bought over the counter for a fraction of the price in Belize. Vacation maybe. Placencia is good. With FEW exceptions no gringos live there. Unless you look like Bob Marley you won't resemble anyone there. No racism or judgement just an observation. Corozal is an obvious choice except for no beach. It has a seawall and no sand. The good is, it is close to Mexico for services and shopping. It is my first choice if I want to live by the water. The lacking of services in Belize make it popular. My second choice is San Ignacio area inland. The down, is no ocean but it has 3 rivers and in the jungle. The other down is no 'clumping' of expats. They are there but spread out. That does not fit me either. As folks age they tend to move away from Belize because of medical issues. The only real draw for Belize, over say Mexico is the English language being used Rent or purchase? In Belize it is easy to buy but hard to sell. Don't make permanent decisions unless you are certain of your choice. Being certain means having lived there for a time long enough to really decide. Many try it for awhile then when the reality strikes and the vacation is over decide to leave. Just like back home. Rent means the landlord is in charge of whether you stay or go. Rent means after 20 years you have rent receipts to show not appreciation in value. Some don't want the work of ownership, but I don't like to depend on someone else to make my decisions for me. Again rent vs purchase should be approached just like doing it back home. Did you just mean keeping up the property or is there something else we need to know? My wife and I are coming down from the US in September to purchase some property and hope to start building shortly afterward. We love San Ignacio and Caye Caulker with plans to have homes in both locations. When you're there, go to a local pharmacy and find out what those prescriptions will cost if you can get them here. If the pharmacist says you need a prescription, well then it's off to find a local doctor. We go to the Mennonite clinic in Spanish Lookout for that. As to Placencia vs Hopkins, both lovely places. IMO, Placencia is somewhat more touristy hence somewhat more expensive. But cheap cheap compared to the US. We considered a beach location when we were investigating Belize, but decided against it cost compared to inland, sea air destroying possessions faster. We are a hour drive from either Placencia and Hopkins, and we can access daily those 3 rivers that Hrlee mentioned in his post. And yes, rent before you buy. It is indeed easier to buy than it is to sell. Enjoy the research! Many that end up on the islands are looking for the resort lifestyle in retirement. If you are fairly handy, or willing to learn, it's not much different than homeownership anywhere else. We know people that hire all repairs out which can be work in itself to follow up with laborers, many of which may not have a phone or their own transportation. The quality of work can be all over the place as well as with anywhere. Depending on the area of the country, hiring workers can be hard in certain seasons as well prime tourist months, sugar cane season. We have owned property in Belize since and built our home in We have owned some other homes since then. Availability of building supplies has improved greatly in the past few years. We used to have to go to Mexico regularly, but we can source pretty much everything through the local hardware stores these days.
