Brilliant achievements in sustainability in Morocco show that soon, the rest of the world may be looking to Africa to learn how to survive. But in reality, the African country — situated on the north-western border — has single-handedly become a defiant beacon of hope. Growing up and visiting family in Morocco, I was always acutely aware — and in awe — of the way they approached sustainability. I remember running around in the streets with my cousins on a searingly hot summer day, living on a diet of organic lentils, fresh pomegranates, juicy oranges and mint tea all grown within a few miles from the house. My mum and dad would often regale me with stories of how they grew up, and how fortunate we are to have constant running water in England. Having both been raised on neighbouring mountains in the Rif, they met whilst getting water from the one and only well in the region — so as soon as they made some money, it made sense that they decided to dedicate themselves to providing water and irrigation systems for the villages they had come from. These are places where reusing shower water has long been the norm, and the idea of using fertilisers on your vegetables, or buying pre-packaged food, is an expensive and bizarre notion. Up until , Morocco outsourced more than 90 per cent of their energy. A new study shows that the entire country could be run on renewable energy by — to give some perspective, the global average stands at around per cent. For a country with a 32 per cent illiteracy rate where four million people are living in poverty, and three million live in remote rural areas , Morocco has long been progressive in the way of sustainability. Organic food is what people are used to, because canned food is more expensive than fresh produce. In the West, carrying reusable bags, eating organic and drinking from non-plastic bottles has become a virtuous symbol of mindful consumption in recent years — but in Morocco, refillable glass bottles have been the norm since Coke was invented. Adapting and evolving with the ever-changing climates has been a necessity, not a luxury. But parallel to all of this, we ask the local community what they need and how we can improve their daily lives. And if the rest of Africa can get behind this, it might be our chance to turn catastrophe in to triumph. Dazed media sites. Subscribe to the Dazed newsletter. Thank you. Spain’s Drug Culture: Is It The New Amsterdam?

Marseille is a double-sided city: luxurious restaurants, nightclubs, and jetsetters on one side; housing projects, and drug trafficking on the other. As many people would agree, this seaside city is sectioned into two distinct neighborhoods: a very rich south, and a very poor north. French President Emmanuel Macron recently visited Marseille to address this crisis. Cannabis and cocaine are the main drugs being trafficked in Marseille, and they often originate from overseas. With drug trafficking comes violence as many traffickers purchase firearms to ensure their survival. Since June 16 th , at least 16 deaths were recorded according to France3 , and the causes varied: kidnapping, torture, burned in the trunk of a car…etc. In the last 20 years, victims of this invincible enemy have become younger, particularly, the last known casualty was an 8-year-old. The youth in these neighborhoods are somewhat condemned to repeating the same errors of the past. They are trapped in a circle of social violence; some get out, while some are too impoverished to do so. The inhabitants feel abandoned by the government, as they have repeatedly asked the police force to act to respond with a solution, but what do they expect? The policemen are overworked, underpaid, and understaffed. President Macron has promised the installation of surveillance cameras, and additional police officers by the end of to relieve the pressure. The crime rate in Marseille is directly linked to the urban poverty, which affects families and children. On the other side of drug traffickers are families trying to survive in a dangerous environment. Marseille has always been known as one of the melting pots of France with Paris of course , attracting people from every social and economic background. However, today it is basking in a hostile atmosphere, threatening the sense of security families, locals and tourists wish to feel. The French government has a lot of work to do in order to reestablish a sense of complacency in this southern city. Eve was born and raised in NYC and later on, moved to Paris. She grew up in an international home and is fluent in both French and English. Every chance she gets, she travels; either to discover a new culture or as a volunteer in an organization. The most memorable cities she has been to are: Ischia, a little island off the coast of Naples for the people, Istanbul for the culture, and Paris for the architecture.
