Explore Alta Via 2 Dolomites - view hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you. It is also known as the High Trail of Legends, as it leads through areas that are particularly rich in legends: the Ladin legends of the Odle and Sella Groups and tales of the legendary people of the Feltrine Dolomites. Along the route you will also find countless historical testimonies from the First World War. However, the daunting part to me was the crossing of the rock slops on the high trail with one side completely open. There is no cable and the rain and heavy backpack made the crossing more scary. After that everything was easy. Beginning in the pasture all trails was helpful as the spacing of trail markers was a bit far. Great views. Big push up at the end. I definitely like doing the big climb first thing in the morning in the cool of the day and when I am freshest. This does not always work out, but today it did partially. I chose to bypass the side quest up to Sass de Putia as I was trying to get some miles in today and adding a bunch of elevation and time was not in the cards. If you are staying at Rifugio Genova, I would highly advise doing this side hike in good weather. After enjoying a Coke at Refugio Genova, I continued up another climb and traverse before the relentless climb up the steep scree to Forcella della Roa. Instead of trying the via ferrata route to Forcella Nives with a full pack. There were no places with water to filter between Genova and Puez except for a small trickle coming down through sheep pastures minutes prior to Refugio Puez. I should have stopped and filtered a liter or more. Water at Puez was only in. It was cheaper to drink anything else! Trail just seemed to go on and on for the final 2hrs, but not tremendously hard. There was a more exposed location but it had cables to assist hikers. Storms were brewing in the valley around 6pm so I hit the trail to find a location to set up camp. For SA, Puez did allow a gentleman set up his tent on the backside of the hut. I do not know what it cost him. Day 1 of hiking the Alta Via 2. I had hiked from the base of Plose Ski lodge to near the top of the lift a few months ago so felt no guilt in taking the gondola as far as I could other than it cost 21 Euro. Reorganized my pack a bit after having taken the train from Napoli and then the bus to the Ski resort. Then the climb up to Refugio Plose in the relentless sun. Free water fill up at the hut. Took the quick hike out to near Monte Telegrafo. Compared to what you will see in the upcoming days, not really worth it if you are continuing the same day to locations beyond the refuge. Being day 1, coming from sea level, starting after 2pm, it was a shorter day. Additionally, thunder was rolling up the valley so found a place to set up camp for the night. This is really one of the most 'boring' sections of the AV2 but a good starter for the multi-day backpacking trip. If I were to do it again and stay in huts, I would considered staying at Schatzerhutte. Refugio Plose is just too short of a day of hiking in my mind. About 54 euro to take the gondola up but definitely worth it. You can hike for miles all around the mountain with incredible views and well maintained roads. After discussions with locals they advised against the AllTrails route which required crampons and was a tough walk, so we decided to take their advice and followed the sisero route which went on the bus to Malga Ciapela. At the township last chance to buy anything to you need head towards the campground keeping the river on your left and Marmolada on the right. Past the farm with horse riding school and pigs! Steep climb and follow the alternate track that you can see on the AT maps. Follow signs for Forca Rossa out of the forest onto the meadows with cows and goats and follow the hairpins bends to the top for a stunning view. From here follow the trial down for a few km and then it joins up with the AllTrails route and finally end up and the Passo San Peligrino. Costabella is an excellent although a little pricey stay where a welcome sauna and excellent food awaits! Awesome route. Some severe VF at the start which is quite extreme and with people in front it is best to have helmets due to loose rocks. Then over the other side more VF and then a long scramble down the scree. After this it is easy, a little exposed with cable but really no concern. Finally the last climb to Rif Rosetta - lots of false summits which is frustrating after a hard day, but the food and accommodation is good at Rosetta. Enjoy a great day. Very tough route especially the part between the middle station and the station polse. Above station plose all the time very nice view. A quick break and into the main drag that becomes very crowded as it seems the cable car from the valley where you are heading brings many day trippers. Walk onto Rif Pordoi which is iconic as it is right at the top of a ridiculously high scree. The food and hot chocolate were great but VERY expensive. Then stupidly walk down the scree - or sensibly take the cable car down…. Scree work the whole way. Our time again is take the cable car any day. By the end of that the legs are flogged and the walk to Refugio Castiglione was a slog. First part of the day was great. But the scree killed the remainder of the day. That said, long but a great day. Left Puez and walked down hill until we reached the foot of Sas de Ciampac which was a good steady climb. Great views that just got better and better. This gets you ready for the truely epic push up Val Setus - AllTrails maps lost its sh1t, but the path is clearly marked - just keep heading up!! The final push up a glacial valley littered with rocks forming a scree was hard going but the views were worth the effort. Finally a relatively flat run in to the rifugio Genova or the beautifully named Schlutrthutte. This is a road without a shoulder. It could be dangerous. It is a very unfortunate way to end what had been a beautiful multi day hike. I am very disappointed in All Trails! Very hard, especially the beginning that goes up to the forest seriously consider chickening out and taking the cable car as it makes a massive difference. Great to take a break at Plaza and then the last push up to rifugio. Last bit in the trail was a bit boring walking up shell path at the views are spectacular. Follow the Dolomites signs and not All Trails marks. Its much more beautiful. The first part of this stage was downhill in the shade and very enjoyable. When you get to the valley floor, don't miss the trail on the downhill side of the road. The road is not wide enough for the cars let alone hikers. You are still in the shade until past the waterfall. Try to make a friend. From the pass, it was an easy and enjoyable walk to our Refugio. Beautiful route with a view of the Gosaldo valley, a somewhat athletic route at times with tricky passages in case of rain but entirely doable. Itinerary carried out by dropping off a car at the refuge parking lot. Great trail and views. I would definitely recommend via Ferrata equipment to be safe. Also, you have to be ready for very exposed trails. There are a few sections where a misstep could be fatal and no via ferrata wire was available. Consider going around those sections. I would still highly recommend the trail. Great trail. Well marked and only a few bits of snow left which were not a problem. After the first peak you come into a boulder field where you can take a shortcut left by following the actual Alta via 2 markings rather than the smoother but also but down-up this route suggests. Completed the trail today from Genova to Puez, by following 3 and left on 2. Only found a few minor snow patches on the trail, totally passable if you have some experience with the snow. Amazing views and astounding scenery. It is physically demanding though. This is an excellent hike down to the Pass from Rifugio Puez. If conditions are poor you can stay at this Pass Gardena and bus around to Pass Pordoi. Crazy views. Not too hard on casual ups and downs and what not but scree section between Rif Genova and Rif Puez was terrifyingly steep and slippery and loose. But it was exhilarating and beautiful. Beautiful alpine lake between puez and gardena, highly recommend jumping in. Be prepared for the weather to change quite quickly. As of today we were informed by the hut owner at Genova that this portion of the AV2 is impassable due to snow, and you must take a bus to reroute and approach Puez from the east. Should clear up in a few days but check before embarking on the route. Conditions were great. Beautiful views. Moderate difficulty due to the steep climb. We started at the Plose Hotel and took route 8 to meet up with the rest of the trail. Challenging hike cut short by snow making planned segments difficult to impossible. Pivoting to Alta Via 1. Made on May 3, impossible to go all the way but the view when arriving m from the summit is definitely worth it. Beautiful with all of the snow and obvious it isn't heavily trafficked as there were a few tracks of footprints and only one snowshoer on the majority of what I hiked. I chose to turn around at about 6k' as I had some plans for later in the afternoon and the snow took a lot out of my legs. Sadly, not too many view and no sweeping panoramas to be found. If I had continued another couple km, I think I would have popped out above the tree line, but I am going skiing tomorrow so the views will be all around me for much less work so a bit less rewarding, but beautiful nonetheless! It does get you to it and it appears it is at least in the woods and not crossing roads, the gondola, etc, but not the Alta Via 2 if that is the reason you are looking to use this. Great variation in terrain, first part Zanser Alm to Refugio Genova was picturesque rolling green hills with cows! Very hard Z climb through the mountain pass on scree but great views throughout. Absolutely epic hike in sunshine! Requires crossing two passes one quite steep and requiring a lot of effort, the second easier but using cables in some exposed areas and lots of high plateau trail, including exposed section on lose scree. Amazing trail, but unfortunately largely clouded in today. Overall easy to navigate and never too technical, with the exception of some washed out river crossings that required sketchy mud slope and rock ledge climbs to get over. Ensure you have full rain gear with you - storms can come out of nowhere! Good trail, somewhat technical, some scrambling and steep sections. Pretty hard but so rewarding. Some hairy via Ferrata sections at the beginning but they get easier. Could definitely get away without gear. I was happy to have it at the first section. In addition to via ferrata gear, you will also need crampon and possibly ice axe for this section. You will be crossing the glacier and it is rather steep and icy. You can hire crampons at the refugios at either end. After staying our first night at the scenically spectacular Plosehutte we set off on Day 2 of Alta via 2 - A beautiful meander downhill through forests and meadows. After about 8 km the trail climbs again through forest then steeply up through a pass. Several washouts and a couple of rock scrambles need to be negotiated. We took it slowly and steadily and it took about 5 hours. Started rolling hills. End had a wicked climb and via ferreta. Beautiful trail through the Dolomites. We added this shortened 4-day version of the classic Alta Via 2 and tried it ourselves ;-. The third day we took an alternative rout 3 past Piz Duleda for a small Via Ferrata climb. Gear isn't really necessary, but we do recommend gloves. Have fun! This was a tougher day! The views are amazing, and the route is a fun one, but be prepared for a steep day. Steep at the end, but a lovely, non challenging trail. Once you finish the elevation gain you have a stunning walk to Rifugio Genova. Stunning views. First part of the route slow but steady comfortable descent. You gain all elevation in last couple of hours, with a steep challenging scree slope right at the end. After that, slow very easy walk towards rifugio genova. Steep, but nothing with this trail is technically challenging. A great start to the AV2. Easy path to follow. Changing landscape nice. Tough climb towards the cottage. Last half an hour easy to walk. This route has nothing to do with av2. The original av2 follows path 4 all the way to the top. This one emerges into a boring dusty road up. Part of the route is private property. Follow your guide book. Amazing adventure! Alta Via 2 Dolomites. Show more Show less. Report an issue.
