Honestly…my experience there during my stays the last two years were nothing but great all around.. Water at meals? We requested and had a bottle of their purified, plain water brought to us at every meal…no problem…no charge… We ate most of our meals at their Thai restaurant we love Thai and found it truly outstanding btw! Room attendents and servicing? No issues there either. In fact…as we usually do when we travel we call and ask for the room to be serviced when we go for breakfast. It was always done…cleaning…towel replacement…etc. Drink and minibar replenishment was done daily by separate staff in the afternoon…as is true at most places. In fact, I had a standing request…which I made at check-in.. And the free mini bar was a nice touch! We made the same request for the nightly turn down services with towel replacement when we leave the room for dinner. It was always done by the time we returned. We brought our own repellent from Singapore and never used it. We felt that there was insect control…either chemical or natural in place.. I also feel that going in dry season makes a positive difference… We found the staffing at breakfast more than adequate…zero problem getting served when we wanted non-buffet items. And always promptly served coffee and juice when we arrived. And they always stopped by a few times to chat and see if we needed anything else. The primary differences between your stay and mine is the type of room and time of year…dry vs, wet. Villa vs, Main building. It may be true that the villas you stayed in may be serviced differently as they are separate buildings while the main building I stayed in is serviced by multiple attendants with carts like in most hotels. And they always seem to be around. As to the insects? Time of year and the fact that most villas appear imo dark and probably prone to more moisture as they are set in the jungle might be a factor. Langkawi is a holiday getaway on the border between Thailand and Malaysia, famed for its 99 or so surrounding Islands and idyllic beaches. Oh and for shopping too, as it is a duty free Island. Thousands upon thousands of tourists from Kuala Lumpur and further afield flock to its shores every year …can there be any more lucrative markets in Malaysia than this playground of rich , with pockets stuffed full of Ringgit? The only downside is that the fridges often find themselves placed in the corner closest to shop windows , so the sides can sit flush to the windows without being unsightly, but this is the space most frequently ignored by people entering shops. However, strength of branding and design coupled with worthwhile content go some way towards neutralising this disadvantage. Driving demand for large bottles of Coke on the island helps to offset tourists bringing down the average number of weekly grocery shopping trips , whilst providing a useful, travel-friendly beach bag or luggage overflow holdall. I must admit that in my 3 days on the island, I was tempted to buy 2 massive Cokes just to get the bag. Being miles from the equator , Langkawi is hot all year round and visitors are in constant need of refreshment. Of all the potential audiences in Langkawi, tourists are the wealthiest , frequenting mainly luxury resorts where a lack of public transport makes it hard to move around the island unless in taxis. Hence the provision of tourist aid via the Coke branded maps makes great sense. Added to all this, Malaysia is a Muslim country , so the soft drink market is even more lucrative and Coke are clearly onto a winning formula. It has tapped into the thriving tourist market in Langkawi to increase its sales on the Island with giveaways, driving increased dwell time at its fridges, and building unconscious associations of frolicking in the north Malay sun being a by-product of Coca-Happiness.
