No visit to Ivory Coast would be complete without a visit to, well, The Coast! JoJo, the owner, moved here 20 years ago from Switzerland, and built a slice of paradise. Each place is more beautiful than the next, and many times I can hardly believe my eyes. I find a fantastic soft spot near Sassandra at Chez Jules, run by a couple of local rasta guys who invite me into their family. One morning we wander around the mountains behind their place picking wild mushrooms before getting stuck into the local drink of palm wine. For my final beach spot I go all the way through Abidjan, the biggest city in the country. I continue East to Assinie, a famous beach-side hangout for ex-pats and well-to-do Abidjan locals. I have a great night when I leave the whole resorty area and wander into the little town to grab a beer at a local bar. Surfboards are for rent here and I have a great day catching at many waves as I can. I can honestly say these are the best beaches I have ever seen in my life. Better than Australia, better than Costa Rica. Yes, that good! I always love it, until the next morning when I vow not to get it again… until I do! She brought word that on August 27 a sworn deposition had been made before District Commissioner D. M'Dowell by James Erskine, Chief of Attuaboe, in the Axim district, to the effect that by Native custom the tenth child of every family is killed by being buried alive, or strangled, or drowned. The mother is put away in a hut which is open at both ends, and when the child is born it is taken from her and put to death. It is reported that Bishop Tugwell, who has just returned to England from Lagos, intends, during his stay, to approach the Home Authorities with a view to influencing them to increase the duty upon spirits imported into the West African colonies. The Bishop maintains the present duty is entirely inadequate to meet the evil which the traffic caused, and which is growing at an alarming rate.
