I was getting ready to book a condo in PDC until I ran across many folks stating they were offered drugs on 5th. I've been to a lot of countries with VERY aggressive sales people. Egypt, Vietnam etc. I can shake that. However I have never been offered drugs. What concerns me is that I have my children this trip. Drug offers mean drug dealers roaming that street. I don't trust them or want to be near them. I know this topic has been done to death, so basically Has anyone been offered drugs during the daylight? We stayed at the RPM and never once got offered drugs. However my husband was offered some when we ventured to 5th Avenue. However it certainly didnt detract from our holiday. Indeed it was just a different experience of Mexico. Put it this way we have just returned from the Maldives and my poor husband was bored to tears-you could never say that about Mexico!!! I wonder how many people actually buy it? I wonder if there are a lot of undercover narc types selling it? There is so much news of real drug protection rackets, that seems to get supressed. Look up Derrecho del pisso, there is much many people don't know about Riviera Maya. The only murder story that seems to have made it by the sensorship is the Chief of Police of the tourist police. That being said I will still travel there. We have been to Mexico more times than we can count and always took our girls, even when they were small. They are now 21 and We also shopped downtown, taking the bus many times as well as taxis. The only place we were offered drugs were when we visited Jamica. The girls were teenagers then and were offered drugs on the bus to the hotel. We will never go back to Jamica because we didn't feel safe when we left the resort. Vendors were very aggressive. We are planning another trip to Mexico in the next couple of months. Can't wait to get there. Go and take your kids. Be careful just like you would be if you were out shopping at home. We were offered weed on 5th Avenue - we shook our heads and kept walking. No big deal. These are not some sort of drug lords, but someone who has a baggie of weed and is trying to make some cash. I don't take drugs, I don't condone it in others, but at no point did I feel unsafe or threatened. Anywhere you find western tourists, you will find someone to supply the demand of those tourists including a number of the places you claim to have travelled to. Really, it would be very naive to think that drugs are not sold, pretty much anywhere US tourists go on vacation some middle eastern countries aside perhaps Certainly widely available if you want it in the Caribbean , US, Canada, Europe, etc. The first time I encountered pot was on vacation in Hawaii as a teenager. I smell pot regulaly in Toronto , but I don't think anyone is unsafe bringing their children here either. Lucia and Antigua too - in the latter, my family was there on the beach parents and 2 kids under 18 , and a guy offered my father 'ganja'. My father is a little hard of hearing, so asked the chap to repeat himself, so he did, quite loudly. The next problem is that my father isn't exactly 'up' on the drug world, and had no idea what he was talking about, so asked the guy bearing in mind we had been offered aloe vera leaves, handcrafted goods, jewellery etc. At this point, my slightly more worldly mother pointed out 'Darling, he is trying to sell you cannabis' at which my father stated 'Oh goodness me, no, we don't want any of that' loud enough that the entire beach heard! I can't say that my brother or I were at all scarred by the experience. Embarrased at our father's uncoolness, yes, scarred, no! Please don't condemn my for what I'm about to say. I'm not saying I agree with what my friend said but I'm just going to repeat it. When I told him we were going to Mexico he seemed concerned and told me if there was another place I'd like to go for the same amount of money I should go there. I laughed and told him we would be in the Riviera Maya and that there aren't any problems there and not to worry. He said all of Mexico was not safe. He mentioned kidnappings. He said that the drug cartel run the whole country and the government is very corrupt. I asked if the police would protect me and he said if some one paid them enough no. He said chances are nothing will happen but maybe go somewhere else and why take the chance. I am not going to worry about it. I know he knows what he is talking about because this is his job but I plan on staying on the resort anyway. There are risks going anywhere. I'm not going to hide in my house because of them. Interestingly enough possession of small amounts of marijuana and cocaine, up to five grams for weed, is actually legal in Mexico and has been since I am less sure of this second part, but I have been told that there is a legal dispensary for marijuana somewhere in Playa. Of course the guys slinging on fifth avenue don't want you to know this because no one is going to pay outrageous prices for something they could buy legally. Skip to main content.
