I don't know what the law is but I wouldn't necessarily trust anything I was told about Jamaica. Not one of my favorite places. Pot is not legal in Jamaica. He will probably be offered it, we always are. His best bet is to say 'no thank you' and keep walking. It is not legal, but my son and son-n-law had guys trying to sell it to them. Expect customs to give you a hard time getting back to the ship. They seem to pick on young males. We will never go back to Jamaica. I have seen policemen stationed at the entrance to the pier that were searching everyone's bags before allowing them to return to the ship. I have seen young men most likely American arrested on the street in Jamaica, shortly after I saw them talking to one of the 'salesmen'. I certainly wouldn't take a chance. Remember, you are in a foreign country and subject to their laws. There is little that the American Embassy can do to help you if you are arrested. And yes there are decoys set up all over the places just hoping to nail an american or cruiseline passenger. I was never offered Pot on Jamaica thank god but my brother was 4 times. Just politely say ' NO Thankyou' and just walk away. Beleive me they don't want to make a seen so they'll leave ya alone. A friend of mine from work told me how her husband bought pot in Ocho Rios and brought it back on board. He had quite the high time on their balcony and had everything consumed before they returned to US waters. I was shocked that he would do something so foolish he's in his 40's but apparently people do get away with it. Not something I would ever do. They will try to set you up. Not all, but there are some that do. As soon as you buy, they go back to the Police and they come find you. I wouldn't try it. It is definitely not legal. We were offered it a few times. We hired a cab to take us around and the driver told us it is common for someone to sell it to you then turn you in for a few dollars. We have also seen people randomly searched getting back on the ship and they tend to single out young males. When we were at MargaritaVille.. There was a man trying to sell pot to my husband. Get this The answer to your question is yes. Marijuana is illegal in JA. However, that law is very poorly enforced. I guess it could be likened to some laws that we have here in the United States. For example, sodomy is illegal in many places, but that law is infrequently enforced if at all. Often, police officers will convict a person of marijuana possession only in order to get them put away for a weightier offense. In so far as people being offered marijuana in Jamaica, I have heard and read of instances where people who prey on the inexperience of tourists have planted drugs on people and had them arrested on false charges. For example, someone approaches you, and asks if you want to buy drugs. Appalled at the idea, you retort 'No! Later, the police approach you and accuse you of buying drugs, and you deny any wrongdoing and agree to be searched, at which point they find the drugs that were planted on you and you are imprisoned. Anywhere, you go, here in the US or abroad, it is important to remember that you must be alert, use common sense, and be wary of something that seems at all questionable or shady. And on the off chance that the police do decide to enforce the laws against marijuana, you will be in a horrible fix. Just a thought. I've heard of that too. Wonder what kind of person would take the chance to buy it at the risk of being arrested and who knows what else from there?? I may not get off again if we go back The 'touristy' parts of Jamaica are fairly safe. Tourism is Jamaica's bread and butter, so the country makes a concerted attempt to protect tourists. However, it is important to remember that someone is always looking to prey on the inexperienced, so you should always be aware of what's going on. My family there is very well-off, but very careful, and very well-armed. It's unfortunate that things have reached that point, but as the gap between the rich and poor continues to widen, crime increases and gets more and more violent. It could be up to a YEAR before your court appearance! Wow, what a statement. I am 36 years old, I own 2 business, have 2 beautiful daughters, belong to many civic organizations, give a lot of money to many charities and volunteer at a local foodbank, and enjoy the occasional joint. This thread was not started to debate the morality of marijuana. Don't make this a flame war, it will get nothing accomplished. Those who smoke will not stop because you call them names and those who hate the very thought of anyone civilized smoking pot will not change their minds either. Back to the topic in hand. When I was there with my wife in 02 I was approached 3 times to buy it and just told them 'No, thanks' and each one moved on. Even if you do partake in marijuana, I think we can all agree that it is just downright stupid to buy it while there. They do get a 'reward' for turning you in after they sell it to you and the consequences are just too severe. Yes the locals sell it on the street and yes the locals smoke it on the street, and Americans and other nationalities that try it get locked up!!!! Know an indivdual who was set up to buy and then was busted, encourage them to stay away from it. I'm sorry, but give me a break please. What kind of pious person would make that statement? Do you live in a glass house and are you sin free? An older couple kept gettingg asked, he said no, next thing you know he is getting arrested for possesion at customs! By FiveOh , March 4, in Jamaica. Some one told me to be careful about the local wanting to sell marijuana and actually stuffing in your pockets or purses when your not looking. Any one actually experienced that? Why would someone selling drugs stuff them in your pockets? They wouldn't get any money that way In Jamaica there is a system of 'on-the-spot' rewards for people who turn in people who buy drugs. So Dealer can't sell you drugs so he slips some in your bag then goes to the nearest police officer to say you have drugs on you. And the corruption continues Just say no and they will move on to the next tourist. When we were there last spring, we went river tubing, climbed the Falls, and hung out at Margaritaville for the rest of the afternoon. No one anywhere approached to buy drugs. We did see many cops and security guards - maybe they're cracking down? We were there last October, and the ganga dealers were out in full force, very aggressive about trying to sell you their wares. We took a tour to Nine Mile and they were waving it in the bus windows as we left the pier. When we got to Nine Mile they were actually crawling under the fence and waving doobs at us. It was insane! I am definately going to go with a Carnival sponsered tour, then when done staying inside the fenced in area - mainly Margaritaville! We were offered weed twice after we were done with the falls. We actually thought it was funny because the guy came by and asked us if we wanted to 'party like bob marley' it took us a sec to understand what he meant. We just shook our heads and he kept walking. Hell that's the one thing I can't wait for a local to ask is if I want some weed We were in Jamaica last week. Were asked coming out of the falls, could smell it floating down the White river and our guides were smoking it : It was very prevalent and we were a family with two kids. Honestly, I've seen a lot but I was ready to get back on the ship in Jamaica. Has anyone heard of a tourist from a cruise ship actually patronizing a ganja dealer and then getting busted by JPD? Who knows because you hear so many on these boards referring to police with some kind of sting ops with the locals as well. The only thing that we were offered a trillion times from the ship was a TAXI. They may have offered more, but we never even slowed down enough to make 'conversation' - just said 'No thanx' and kept walking. My DH even said NO to a cabbie as he was pulling up before the guy even asked. We went to a number of the shops inside Island Village - including Del Sol. Very Friendly staff in there. Highly recommend it! Yah Mon!!!!!! Whoo Hoo! What a blast!! Don't be expecting too much Jimmy Buffet to be played however! I am a big Jimmy Buffet fan - but even a bigger Conroy fan now!! Conroy is the DJ at Margaritaville!! Say HI for me if you get there. Maybe the offering is more 'prevelent' out in the 'real' areas of Jamaica. We had zero problems on our way to and in or back from Island Village. And we were only one of two ships in port that day!! I was expecting dogs and police when we came back to the ship Only to check our ID's. No searches on board either Don't people know how to say 'no thanks' and move on? I was asked 1x by an old Rastaman and I asked him if he had kids and if he did he should be ashamed of himself for being a gangahead. He never bothered me again. Was there last spring break and my DH was offered pot a few times on our walk from the James Bond port to Margaritaville. It was mostly amusing. Then a lady asked me if I wanted a necklace. Loved her. Yes, it's a little annoying after the 10th time but just say 'no' and keep walking. Write An Amazing Review!
