Nineteen members of Congress are pushing Mark Zuckerberg to explain why Meta has allowed ads for cocaine, ecstasy and other drugs to be shown on Facebook and Instagram. Since then, the TTP has been posting additional examples of such ads on X, including one it found yesterday. It gives Meta a deadline of September 6 to reply. The European Union's top court has sided with a privacy challenge to Meta's data retention policies. It ruled on Friday that social networks, such as Facebook, cannot keep using people's information for ad targeting indefinitely. The judgement could have major implications on the way Meta and other ad-funded social networks operate in the region. The official announcement comes as Zuckerberg announced back in June that the company was testing a way for users to watch Reels on its Quest headsets. Mark Zuckerberg said Wednesday during Meta Connect that Meta AI is one of the most used AI assistant across the world with 'almost' million monthly active users. Zuckerberg said that Meta AI is on track to become the most used assistant across the world. Meta will begin to deploy facial recognition tools on Facebook and Instagram to fight scams and help users who have lost access to their accounts, the company said in an update. The detail came from EssilorLuxottica CFO Stefano Grassi, who revealed during the eyewear giant's earnings call last week that Ray-Ban Meta proved to be a significant driver for the company's sales. But some analysts are concerned the company's valuation is lofty. Come hear the latest and greatest insights from top space entrepreneurs and investors. Buying Ecstasy Malia

Dawn breaks over Malia and casts a shaft of sunlight over the wreckage of the night. Young men and women - white-faced and with glazed, unseeing eyes - wander the streets like the living dead. Others lie flat on their backs in the streets, semi-comatose. Trails of blood on the pavement reveal where revellers have fallen or been in a fight. In the budget hotels, girls lie in unfamiliar beds next to boys they've just met. When they wake up with crippling hangovers, they'll ask themselves: 'Did we? It's Thursday in Crete's premier 'party' resort, and, as usual, it's been a busy night at the medical centre - around 50 Brits turning up for treatment to cuts, sprains and wrist injuries from fighting. At 7am, an ambulance races to a hotel where a man has fallen, drunk, from a balcony, breaking his jaw and gashing open his head in the process. He is transferred to hospital in Heraklion the island's capital, where his condition is serious but stable. Exploited: Youngsters, like these, just want a good time after their exams. But tour firms manipulate their naivity. Later in the day, he is joined by another British youth who has fallen off one of the quad bikes that roar through the streets and has suffered severe leg and kidney injuries. This man is gravely ill, his prognosis is uncertain, but doctors believe he will survive. At the beginning of the week, three were brought in, accused of using counterfeit money. Then on Wednesday, a bedraggled year-old youth arrived in handcuffs, accused of raping a British girl. One horror story after another, but this is just another week in Malia. The revellers are aged 16 upwards and are attracted by the affordability of this tawdry strip of bars and nightclubs which is just a four-hour plane journey from Britain. Most of the 5, tourists in Malia right now are teenage Brits - many have just completed exams at school and are experiencing their first taste of freedom away from home. They can't wait to binge drink and 'pull', but one senses they are getting more than even they bargained for. It's a crazy scene every single night. The madness is fuelled, of course, by alcohol. Gallons of it. Many of the 80 bars and clubs offer three-for-one or even six-for-one drink deals. Trouble in paradise: The Greek island of Crete is fast-becoming the resort of choice for boozy Brits. It's quite usual for one person to drink two litres of the stuff in an evening. There are no boundaries, no restraints. It is an ugly scene that reveals a terrifying picture of British society. All the problems back home - binge-drinking, crime, promiscuity, teenage pregnancies - are magnified here to grotesque proportions. Some of the young holidaymakers are out of their minds on ecstasy the drug of choice or cocaine or heroin, which locals says is easily obtained from dealers who hang around the bars. When they're in this state, many of the tourists grab someone to have sex with. No one bothers with chat-up lines; there's no need. The locals look on with contempt. As one Greek put it: 'With dogs, they might spend a few minutes with each other before they do it, but the Brits don't even bother with that. Manolis Katsulis, who runs the Cretan Medicare centre in Malia, says more than girls come in every day asking for the morning-after Pill. This year we've had two or three so far; last year there were about At the moment we are seeing a lot of people with gonorrhoea. One girl or boy with it might infect ten to 20 other people on their holiday. No one seems to be using protection. This is not what it is for,' says the doctor. Sex becomes a grey area when both parties are paralytic. Is the girl consenting, or simply unable to fend off the boy? They do it all over the place, on the beach and even in the cemetery. One former barman told me he saw a girl having sex with a boy as she lay on a prickly plant in a hotel garden. Then she went out and came back plastered, and lay on the plant and had sex with the boy,' he said. Later I saw her and she was covered in cuts and bruises. The circumstances of the latest rape allegation involving the year-old boy are unclear, and the identity of the accused protected at the moment by Greek law until it goes to trial. But it's doubtful it will ever get to court. After appearing at the Heraklion court, the boy was released pending further enquiries. He said he had no money to pay bail and it seems there was no desire to lock him up. He's probably back in Britain now. No details have been released about the girl. But that is the way of things here with the British teenagers. Rather than send them to jail, the authorities let them off with a fine. Around ten Britons a week appear at the court. They're usually here on assault charges after a fight, or for driving drunk while riding a quad bike. Many appear on public indecency charges after stripping naked and running through the streets. Semi-comatose, they fall prey to thieves. Sometimes, the assaults are very serious. A couple of weeks ago, a gang of youths beat up a shopkeeper and trashed his store after he dared to ask them to be a little quieter as they careered down the street on their quad bikes. Around the same time, a gang of Irish boys were arrested after throwing bottles of beer at a policeman. There are growing tensions between the British and the Greeks. I can't take the British any more. Binge drinking is a familiar problem, but it seems to have gone on to a new and even more dangerous level in Malia. How has this happened? One local places the blame squarely at the door of the tour operators. A group of will then go to a bar and drink as much as they can as quickly as they can, encouraged by the reps, who are on commission from the bars. But in my view all the bad stuff that happens here happens because of these bar crawls. They just abandon them. There's no safe escort back to the hotel. Another reason the young Brits go so wild, says a shopkeeper who asked not to be identified, is that the alcohol used for the cheaper drinks is of a very poor quality and almost industrial strength. Most of them are nice, but when they are given this stuff they go crazy. Now the bar owners are making lots of money and can't believe their luck. This week, I witnessed the madness of Malia. On Wednesday, up until midnight, the atmosphere was raucous but more or less controlled, with various groups of girls in matching T- shirts with their names on, or in tutus or dressed as bunny girls, walking self-consciously down the main drag, watched by the boys. Then, shortly after midnight, the atmosphere seemed to change in a moment. Teenagers staggered through the streets, struggling to stay upright. There was a deafening noise of whistles being blown. People were dancing and shouting. One girl leapt on the back of a boy and began gyrating against him. Four or five of his friends smacked her hard on the backside - not a cheeky gesture, but one of aggression. A girl hoisted up her skirt and flashed her knickers; another's breast fell out of her dress and she nonchalantly tucked it back in. A girl teetered along the street in slow motion, then fell on the ground and lay flat on her back, where she was surrounded for a few moments by a group of leering youths. A few yards away, a boy was flat out on the pavement vomiting. He had wet himself and defecated. No one paid any attention to this degrading sight. Those under the influence of ecstasy were easy to spot, wandering alone, ashen-faced, in a daze. Even the restaurants buy into this philosophy of excess, with many offering a buffet of 'Italian, Indian, Chinese food' - all laid out revoltingly together. I have covered the 'Brits behaving badly' story in Falaraki, Magaluf and Ayia Napa, but I have seen nothing quite like this. Hannah Lawton, an year- old from Manchester who is starting a social work degree in the autumn, is in Malia with a group of six friends. I met them earlier that evening. Youths pictured in Faliraki on the Greek island of Rhodes, which was a former favourite with young Britons before Malia. Things usually turn nasty at about 2am or 3am and there is often fighting. It has even turned violent in the medical centre when doctors are treating young men injured in brawls. One man we treated recently tore out all his stitches with a pen the moment they were in. Many doctors have left - they can't take it. Only about 25 per cent of the people we treat pay. The rest say they don't have the money or health insurance to cover it. Those in the worst shape at the end of the night collapse in a heap on the street. In this semi-comatose state, say locals, gipsies from the region take advantage and steal their wallets and mobile phones. Sometimes, drunk young Brits will wander into a Greek home and collapse in the nearest bed - to the immense shock of the person lying in it. They genuinely don't know where they are and believe they are in their hotel. The police say they are doing what they can. There are nightly patrols and a number of undercover officers operating in the bars. The police chief of Malia, who has asked not to be named, is based at the station in nearby Hersonissos. When we have alcohol-testing purges of tourists who go on the quad bikes, the figure goes up. And they entice British people with promises of cheap booze and sexual orgies. Malia was in the news last week again after Leah Andrews, a year-old British mother, was accused of strangling her newborn child here. She was later charged with infanticide and placed in custody. The mayor of Malia, Kostas Lagoudakis, says he desperately wants the situation to change and has the support of most of the local residents. But the situation is getting out of hand and we must stop it. On Thursday night, Mr Lagoudakis spent the evening trying to stop tourists driving their quad bikes along a pedestrianised street, with limited success. To stop them passing through, he placed a placard advertising ice-cream in the middle of the road. It's going to take a lot more than that, unfortunately, to get a grip on the madness that has seized this town. Whatever that might be, something needs to be done soon, because right now there is an awful air of impending tragedy in Malia. Privacy Policy Feedback.
