That was the second of what turned out to be seven times I got offered drugs at a festival this year. Behind these schemes is a recognition that some people will continue to take illegal substances at festivals. While not condoning their behaviour, the hope is that drug testing may inform people when their drugs have been mixed with other dangerous substances, and thereby lower the number of incidents that occur. The eight-part series One Night of Ecstasy relives the Kendal Calling festival of through the experiences of Simon Chapman and his friends. A general sense of excitement builds as Simon — now 23, the eldest among them — echoes the voices of many festival-goers. Through interviews with other members of the friendship group — including now year-old Lacie - we learn that it was the first time many of them had been to a festival. After a whip around, with all those opting in paying around a fiver, Simon went to collect some pills for the group. This is not an unfamiliar scene for some festival-goers. Jordan Blackburn, now 22, one member of the friendship group, was reacting badly to the pills, while Christian Pay, 18, another of their friends, had already gone into cardiac arrest. Christian died before his family arrived at the hospital. Jordan, however, survived. But a fun weekend away from home for a young group of friends turned into a serious police investigation. He was walking to work when the police approached him. It was then that he realised his life could be about to change. When the case went to court, Simon was advised by his barrister to plead guilty to his charges. What happened at the festival between this group of friends was undeniably serious, and there might be those who feel Simon's role in his friend's death makes him ineligible for sympathy. He identifies that he became the middleman between them and a drug dealer - a role that other friendship groups have had in the past, and one that others will probably have in the future. Simon struggled to reconcile the severity of the situation he found himself in, even questioning if he was part of some sort of police conspiracy. Simon was given a month custodial sentence, and served four of them in prison. Now, two years after the whole incident and having been released from prison in December , there has been time for reflection. But both Jordan and Lacie also talk about their sense of guilt, knowing that what happened to either Simon or Christian could so easily have happened to them. But got caught. What makes this story of Simon and his friends so pertinent is that it is one of ordinary young people, outside of the context of addiction and criminality that is often associated with drugs.
