The series presents sector reviews and studies undertaken in Central and Eastern Europe that cover development issues and innovative areas to increase investment in agriculture in the region. It also inc ludes a mid-term strategy for the Ukrainian oilseeds sector, prepared in close collaboration with a wide range of public and private stakeholders. Between and , EBRD continued to invest in the Ukrainian oilseed sector and asked FAO to pursue its efforts to promote a more active and transparent policy dialogue between local private stakeholders and Ukraines policy makers. Based on this report, the Government of Ukraine has started to implement some of the policy recommendations put forwa rd, in particular the progressive reduction of Ukraines export tax of oilseeds. The report provides useful background information for commodity analysts, financial institutions wishing to invest in the oilseed sector and governments of oilseed producing countries. Sunflower oil is by far the major vegetable oil consumed in Kazakhstan. The growing consumer demand has been largely met by imports rather than local production. Results illustrated soon that sunflower yields could be increased if farmers used new sunfloweer seed hybrids even under low rainfall conditions. In , FAO and the EBRD, with funding from the Government of Japan, agreed to provide technical assistance to help farmers in the region increase production and processing of sunflower seed using more efficient techniques. Topics covered included planting, fertilization, weed control and harvesting. Sunflower seed hybrids were provid ed from seed companies in France and Ukraine and partners in Kazakhstan provided locally available and imported hybrids for demonstartion trials. In , demonstration trials were conducted in two locations in the Aktobe region and 30 hybrids from different seeds companies were tested. Book series. The project was particularly relevant in terms of environmental degradation and climate change, as it took important first steps towards a land degradation neutrality monitoring system and integrated land use management plans in Ukraine, thus contributing to the enhanced integration of environmental policy into governance systems. The project significantly implemented successful capacity building, which led to increased information sharing and the development of draft laws on environmental protection. Numerous demonstration and capacity building activities on good conservation agricultural practices and enhanced technologies like no till drill, subsurface drip irrigation, crop rotation and sustainable shelterbelt management generated greater awareness.
