Having decided that one day was enough Angkor for us we spent our last day in Siem Reap lazing around town, looking into activities for when we start heading north in Vietnam. The river area has some nice cafes and we hit an internet cafe to try uplpading some of our photos. Sadly upload speeds proved incredibly slow throughout Cambodia. Because our night bus to Phenom Penh did not leave until we did some casual shopping in the night market and, right before we had to catch the bus, got foot scrubs and massages to get rid of the worst of the dust. Nothing like your morning coffee in a beer glass…. Our booking was with Giant Ibis and overall it was a pretty good experience. Cambodian roads being what they are, we did not get a lot of sleep but the bus seemed relatively clean and comfortable with our two side-by-side top bunks. Incidentally top bunks about halfway back are the way to go on nightbuses. We arrived early in Phenom Penh and grabbed breakfast at the Blue Pumpkin on the waterfront where we had a great view of both the sunrise and the morning aerobics session involving swords. Breakfast was followed by a search for our hotel. At breakfast and dinner we were treated to people lighting up all around us. Not our favourite experience, especially as we had a border crossing later that day! To be fair the room was clean and the staff were helpful, but most of the room savings go to transport to other, more interesting parts of town. We caught a tuk-tuk out to the Killing Fields and did the audio tour through the grounds. They were smaller than we imagined but the tour was really well done and included first hand accounts from both survivours and perpetrators. We took only one photo as it was not a place we felt it appropriate to be snap-happy in. This is the memorial Stupa containing the bones of many of the killing fields victims. As part of the tour you go in and view them. Other than that excursion Phenom Penh was a bust as far as we are concerned. The entire city is a dustbowl with few attractions outside the killing fields and the royal palace. Our perception may have been clouded by our location and lack of sleep, but if Phenom Penh is the pearl of Asia we can only vouch for the sand at its heart. Thankfully, the next leg of our journey was dust free. We stayed out on the back area for the entire trip and the breeze kept us pretty cool. The border was quiet here and we already had our visa so there were no hassles or money grabs. The change from Cambodia to Vietnam was striking. Chau Doc itself was not all that spectacular, but we did have the nicest room we had stayed in to date at the Trung Nguyen Hotel. Sadly, the all night party in the two rooms next to us ensured we gor no sleep. Even earplugs could not drown these guys out and two stormy visits to their rooms only quieted them for a few minutes afterwards. In the night bus bunks. Breakfast at the Blue Pumpkin. Sunrise over the Phenom Penh waterfront. Rooms were small but clean. The place was a little hard to find, but this is the outside of it. The Royal Palace Lunch at Friends Restaurant — this is a training centre for at risk youth and their families, giving them hospitality skills. Share this: Twitter Facebook. The highlight of their menu is Bingsu, a popular Korean dessert made with milky snow. Bingsu is made by shaving frozen milk into fine, delicate flakes, creating a light and fluffy texture that resembles snow. This milky snow is then topped with various sweet ingredients like fresh fruits, nuts, and syrups to create a delightful explosion of flavors. With its smooth and creamy consistency, Bingsu is a perfect dessert to enjoy on a hot summer day. Each Bingsu creation is beautifully presented and garnished with care, making it not only a treat for the taste buds but also a feast for the eyes. From decadent cakes and pastries to refreshing fruit smoothies and specialty coffees, there is no shortage of options to choose from. Their specialty in serving Bingsu, a Korean-style milky snow dessert, sets them apart from other establishments.
