Neve is a poor girl roaming the streets of Paris until one day she meets a beautiful, but mysterious lady and an intriguing young man Murphy has updated the story, added a fantastic spin, and made the whole concept of Snow White fresh and interesting again. Given the space limitations, there's not much branching out, no subplots to digress into. Chapters are told from different points of view. Each chapter consist of non-rhyming verses of varying lengths. I admit that, at first, it took some time to adjust, but after that it went smoothly. Since it's such a short read pages, but consider the form , I read it again and loved it even more the second time around. Murphy's writing, with its beautifully lyrical, rhythmical and evocative language, provides a movie-like experience. From half a page of text, a detailed scene unrolls before your eyes, conveying so much more than what's written down. So despite these initial and short-lasting hiccups, once I allowed myself to feel every word, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe this is not everyone's cup of coffee yes, coffee. No tea, please. Books Mom. Murphy has taken the fairy tale of Snow White and created a beautiful modern-day story. We first see Neve snow, in Italian as a beggar girl on the streets of Paris, who tells those who give her money that 'My father is a peacock with sad purple and green eyes decorating his luminous feathers. And Maman? A beautiful black swan who bathes in rainwater. Because the story is written in prose poetry, it's a quick read. The language is lyrical and enables the reader to clearly see the action, without further descriptions by the author. The POV of each woman was clear and the reader could identify in some way with each of them. It was interesting to see Rosa's thoughts as she justified her plans for Neve. Anyone who has felt awkward or unlovely as a teen will identify with Neve and her desire for a better life, and every mother will feel the pain and love that Jacinta has for her daughter. Even if you aren't a fan of poetry, I would recommend giving this re-telling a look. My favorite part was near the end, but I don't want to give away spoilers, so read it yourself to discover the extent of Neve's powers. Jessica at Book Sake. This was an interesting take on the Snow White story set in what I assumed was modern day Paris. I liked a lot of the modern aspects and the lack of the dwarfs but the constantly changing writing perspective was tough to follow. It's really the only reason that I didn't give this book a 4. The supernatural element was written well and believably into the fairytale. Overall I enjoyed the book and it was a fun fast read with a good twist on the familiar. Reviewed by Gabi for Book Sake.
