Set high in the Andes Mountains in southern Ecuador, Cuenca is a very attractive and historic place, one of the most pleasant and best-preserved of the great Spanish colonial cities. It usually features as part of an overland trip from Quito down to Guayaquil. Cuenca is set high in the Andes Mountains in southern Ecuador. This attractive city contains a host of Spanish colonial architecture. There's also some good trekking and Inca ruins in the vicinity. The city is usually visited for nights as part of a guided overland trip from Quito down to Guayaquil. The dramatic valley that runs for over km miles along the top of the Andes between Quito and Cuenca is lined either side by a string of often snow-capped volcanoes. The name has stuck and these days travel companies promote the journey as an essential part of a trip to Ecuador. Whilst we are not totally against this idea, we generally find that focusing on certain key locations within the country tends to deliver a better overall experience than simply driving along a busy main road through such a densely populated area. Set amongst the southern peaks of the Ecuadorian Andes, around km south of the capital Quito, Cuenca is an attractive and historic city. The incredibly stable and amenable climate in these high valleys has long proved attractive to settlers, with evidence of human presence dating back over 10, years. When the Inca invaded around , they renamed the place Tomebamba and developed it to such an extent that it was said to rival their magnificent capital of Cusco in southern Peru. Tomebamba is thought to be the El Dorado of Spanish legend, a place fabled to be literally built of gold. But by the time the conquistadors arrived during the s, the city had been abandoned and lay in ruins. The Spanish invaders established the city of Cuenca in and it swiftly grew to become the capital of one of the three provinces which would eventually be combined to make up the Republic of Ecuador. Modern day Cuenca is generally considered to be the most charming city in the country and one of the best preserved Spanish colonial cities in South America. The heart of the city is filled with narrow cobblestone streets, picturesque plazas beautiful churches and historic monasteries. There also some interesting and colourful markets, including a lovely daily flower market in the main square. Amongst these streets you can encounter highly-skilled local artisans, not least the makers of Panama hats, which actually originate from here rather than the eponymous country in Central America. Of course, the city also contains the requisite array of historic buildings, churches and museums to explore, as well as a reasonable selection of boutique hotels and interesting restaurants. Cuenca is a very attractive place to explore, a good deal less busy and hectic than Quito and yet with a similar wealth of history and culture. Here are a few highlights Set in the hills to the south, the Mirador Turi is simply a location from which there are great views out over the city, so a good place from which to orient yourselves shortly after arrival. Despite its name, this impressive building was built in and is the main city church, with its iconic three blue domes looming above the central plaza. A climb up a steep spiral stone staircase leads to an excellent view over the rooftops. The Rio Tomebamba flows through the south side of the old city and is lined by pleasant gardens and paved trails. Stairs on the north side lead up into the older part of the city, connecting to the restaurants and bars of the Calle Larga area. Started in , the Old Cathedral, El Sagrario, is now a museum and the subject of a major restoration project. Although the displays of old currency may be a little dry for some people, the section which displays the shrunken heads of the Shuar culture are particularly interesting. Hailing from the Amazon Basin, the Shuar tribespeople achieved world renown during the s when explorers first encountered them and described their habit of cutting off the heads of their enemies and shrinking them down, to keep as trophies of war. We are not generally big fans of zoos, but this place has a very relaxed feel, more like hiking on a mountain trail through a large eucalyptus grove. There is a decent range of animals, many of which have been rescued and some of which come from a lot further afield than South America notably the African lions and crocodiles. Cuenca is a city of artisan, with metal-working being a particular skill in the Del Vado neighborhood, particularly the creation of various traditional items made of copper. The Luthier is a passionate and very dedicated craftsman, who is renowned throughout the country for his work with guitars and other stringed instruments. His workshop is open to a select few guests. On a street called La Condamine lies the studio of Oswaldo Morocho, a master craftsman of wind instruments. On a visit to his workshop guests can enjoy the exhibition and melodies of the instruments that he himself has made such as quenas, pan-pipes, rollers and flutes. The world may know them as Panama hats, but the paja toquilla actually originates from Cuenca. There are various locations where you can see these hats being made and, of course, loads of places where you can buy one. Cuenca has a number of interesting markets. Best known is the daily flower market in the main square, but there are also various fruit, vegetable and livestock markets that may be worthy of exploration. The greater Cuenca area offers a further range of arguably even more interesting places to visit The various villages that surrounding the city lie in lush green valleys and can be very scenic. Some of them are particularly renowned for their various specialist handicrafts, such as textiles, jewellery and woodwork. Just 15km 9 miles to the northwest of Cuenca is the Parque Nacional Cajas, a beautiful landscape of high elevation grasslands, jagged peaks and around deep-blue mountain lakes. Around 80 km 48 miles north of Cuenca, Ingapirca is the site of the most important Inca ruins in Ecuador. The site itself is obviously nowhere near Machu Picchu in terms of scale and grandeur, but if you have already developed a taste for Inca ruins, or if fancy getting started, then they are well worth a visit. The main building of interest is the Temple of the Sun, which has been built in typical Inca style, oriented to align with the solar equinoxes. Cuenca has a subtropical highland climate. Temperatures are almost constant year round, with the two seasons being largely defined by the variation in rainfall. Although the weather patterns are essentially similar to those in Quito, the extremes are less and the place remains attractive year round. During the Jun-Sep dry season conditions are usually warm and dry, with lots of sunshine. During the Oct-May rainy season conditions are usually slightly more warm and wet, with more overcast skies.
