Part of this story. Sunrise in Jennat Rudbar. Finding powder in Shemshak. Tehran is the skiing hub of Iran and there are four world-class ski resorts within an hour's drive from the city. In a mega-city, you would never expect this type of access. Similar to Europe, skiing is reserved for the privileged. Mountaineering and camping are also popular in the winter. All set in Shemshak. Van life. I really loved competing and always loved filming, but eight years of competing was enough. So when I finally decided to commit percent to travelling, building the truck and starting Snowmads, everyone already knew I had this intrinsic drive for exploring. The thing I love most about my sport is that wherever there are snowy mountains, I can go and ski. Skiing in Iran poses so many question marks, but with my connections over there, I felt I could dig a bit deeper, immerse myself in the culture and find places that you wouldn't imagine existed in the Middle East. I would encourage anyone to learn basic vocabulary. This respect will in turn be rewarded by mutual respect from the locals. Learn the local customs, cuisine, activities and get involved. Start speaking with locals and form connections. One experience leads to another and who knows where it may take you. Lentsch with Sina Shamyani and Reza Saharkhiz. Every time I visited Iran before, I always felt like a foreigner. A lot of my friends spoke English, but as soon as they started speaking Farsi, I had no idea what was going on. It made me feel like a foreigner. Without Farsi, I never would have met my good friend and tanbur teacher, Hamza, who was the only guy I just spoke Farsi with. We visited his hometown of Kerend, dived in the Persian Gulf and really embraced life in Iran. I was really happy with the progress I made with the language and I feel I got as close as possible to reaching my goal. But I loved the challenge. The Snowmads truck and crew. Shortly after securing a spot on the Freeride World Tour in , professional freeskier Fabian Lentsch pulled out of the competition to forge a path of his own. He refurbished an old fire truck, filled it with skis and friends, and headed east to explore some of the world's less vaunted mountain ranges and document his travels along the way. This career-altering decision gave way to Snowmads — a film project that follows his nomadic adventures into Eastern Europe and beyond. Alongside longtime friend Markus Ascher, the duo have since travelled to Greece, Georgia and Iran in pursuit of perfect powder and newfound cultural experiences. Now in his newly released adventure documentary titled, A Foreign Native , Lentsch returns to the ancient landscapes of Iran with one goal in mind: to become as local as possible. Check out the player at the top of the page to watch Lentsch go all-in on Iran and scroll down to learn more about his experience there. Why return to Iran? Do you think you achieved your goal of becoming as local as possible in Iran? Snowmads Fabian Lentsch brings a rotating group of famous skiers on a trip through the mountains of the Middle East. The Stomping Grounds This action-packed feature explores the backyards and zones that pro skiers frequent to seek new experiences. Stoke the Fire The best skiing locations. Imposing mountains. March 23, Kamran Kashani from Iran Shemshak, this resort is more than 60 years old, only 45 minutes drive from Tehran. This used to be a coal mine village, and 65 years ago some German engineers working in the mines started to use the slope for skiing. The runs are mainly black, but for average skiers, there are couple of slopes, at the bottom of the slope there is a beginners slope with a drag lift and ski school. Advanced skiers and mogul freaks love Shemshak, lots of powder is also available. The ski season is four months, from December to end of March. A nice small hotel is located in the village, and the chair lift station is next to it. A halogen lit night slope is also available from 6 to 10 PM. There are lots of coffee shops and restaurants in the village, also you can find rooms to rent. There are lots ski repair shops , which also provide snow boards and skis and boots to rent. You will enjoy skiing in Shemshak, Cheers. December 20, Parvis from Iran Shemshak ski slopes was operational today. The lifts are modest where the scenery is awesome and stopping at Sierra Building with it's fine restaurants, coffee shops, fast-food restaurant and spots shop makes up for whatever there was missing. Balcony Restaurant has a fine array of European cuisine and a delicious pizza. Dejaue coffee shop is a complement to a day of skiing the Wall. Lantern spots shop is at the top of it's game with finest array of spots equipments for playing in snow or just demonstrating the latest snow fasion. Sierra has a full gym with sauna and jaquzy to sooth that tired body. Come to Shemshak, come day or night. Enjoy the serene beauty of the nature and indulge yourself and that special person a time to remember. March 17, Bozorgzadegan Amir from Iran How about my yesterday review? Regarding the shortness, we see long reviews so much, who are discusing about the resort and village around! Sometimes we see that reviews will be omited completely! Thanks and regards. We hope, we will be able to write our thoughts freely at least here. The opportunity to review is focused on gathering opinion on standards of services at the resort. We prefer to limit 'political' opinions regarding management etc. It is never our intention to upset the users of this service. March 16, Bozorgzadegan Amir from Iran A nice sunny, no wind and reasonable snow and not so crowded in professional piste of Shemshak. As though, the road to the neighbour resort Dizin was closed as usual, because of avalanches fear! But in Shemshak everything were gathered to enjoy. We could see different generations, children to olds, men and women, Iranian and foreigners, all were satisfied for the lovely day related to the items out of human powers! But during the way back home, we had one and half hours delay because the narrow mountain road between restaurants Hamaloon and Koohestan before Meygoon was closed both directions neither for avalanches, nor for stone falling! A truck was demolished on narrow road and a new barrier was created! The problem which could create a big disaster in that area, by falling stones or avalanches indeed, and so many passengers inside the stopped cars could bury and forget the lovely passed hours. But woe betide their families! We must not forget, the above road supports and connect to 3 ski resorts, north suburb of Tehran. The resorts like Darbandsar, Shemshak, and Dizin. Today's world believe that safety is first. One of the Russian visitors who did ski well, was surprised of the Shemshak slopes and he compared it with Cheget in north Caucasus, and didn't notice the same for Elbrus and Dombai on the same ranges in his country. As though he hadn't chance to see other resorts in Iran like Darbandsar and Dizin in the same area yet. Regarding Crasnaya Polyana, host of winter Olympic , he was disappointed because of Black Sea effects on it. Mostly you see rain there and the altitude is not high enough, while Russia has Elbrus, Cheget, Dombai, etc But it is joyful of adventure even more than Darbandsar skiing resort. Do not be afraid and just try it! February 09, Afshin from Iran Shemshak is a real challenge for all skiers, especially ' The Wall'! January 30, kiarash rabbani from Iran I think Shemshak is one of the best pistes for experts who really want to enjoy skiing but the lifts are the worst in the world. Tnanks snow-forecast for good and exact weather information. January 22, jubin del from Iran The most adventure in skiing could be found at Shemshak ski tracks. The best for experts where you can enjoy a full-day skiing. I agree, it is somehow not standard especially the bumps and the slope , but it still seems to be the best. February 01, Ali Ganjali Beyk from Iran 13, feet plus mountains and some ski resorts. Shemshak ski resort was the second ski resort to be built in Iran in Shemsak ski resort itself is quite small. It is usually sunny at Shemshak ski resort and it is blessed with a high snowfall due to its altitude and the dry air, ensuring a lot of high quality powder. Seven ski lifts, two chair lifts, three button lifts and 2 two t-bars. January 01, ardeshirdadras from Iran Enjoy the snow every day of the year with a ski in Shemshak. Life may be full of ups and downs. Shemshak happens to prefer the downs. Snowsure: 3. Variety of pistes: 3. Off-piste: 3. Scenery: 3. Access: 3. Public Transport: 2. Accommodation: 3. Cheap Rooms: 3.
