Hungry in Zanzibar: Your Guide to Buying Food

Prices are often not labeled in mini-marts or supermarkets and people in the open market expect a little friendly haggling. The produce in Zanzibar is exceptional. The market in Stone Town is the biggest, but the Nungwi market is great and the prices are a little lower. Prices will be particularly good if the fruits and vegetables are in-season. The majority of vegetables are sold by weight, but many of the fruits are sold by the unit mango, watermelon, pineapple, banana bunch. For items sold by weight, it will be hard to get a vendor to sell you just one or two. The standard measurement is a kilogram — 2. Market vendors expect a friendly negotiation and prices are usually set with this in mind. Standard practice is to start your negotiating by offering half of their asking price. Sometimes a vendor will switch out for a smaller version of the item when you negotiation i. At the Stone Town market, the best prices are found farther back in the market. The vendors out front, facing the road are all over priced and too aggressive for us. In Zanzibar you can almost survive on fresh produce alone, but even the best stir-fry is better with rice. Back home I would never consider tortillas or teriyaki sauce a luxury, but some things are expensive comparably or hard to find in Zanzibar. Prices and availability of booze varies wildly around the island. Alcohol is sold in special stores which sometimes also stock beer and wine. Beer is surprisingly hard to find and is sold by the bottle, not the 6- or pack. Mixer, like tonic and soda water, is also sold individually. We will probably never get the same prices if we go back on our own. Tanzania does grow some spices black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, vanilla but we suspect that most of those sold in the market are not local. First, the packaging looks just like the spices we bought in India, and the prices are way higher than anything else produced in Tanzania. We recommend avoiding these stalls all together, but if you do want to buy spices, find the stalls at the back of the market and negotiate fiercely. Skip to content.
