Mephedrone crystal smoke in Negombo Sri Lanka
Police are seizing more of the new drug mephedrone — which is being sold by drug dealers as a substitute for ecstasy — as hospital admissions for recreational users rise. The drug was unheard of in hospitals a year ago, but Auckland Hospital saw up to 20 people suffering from its effects last year. Wellington Hospital has seen two patients in the past six months and other hospitals say they are aware of the drug, which has been linked to deaths overseas. Paul Hemi, 25, is scheduled to be sentenced in Wellington District Court this month after pleading guilty to supplying hundreds of mephedrone tablets. It is believed to be one of New Zealand's first sentences handed down for supplying the drug. The maximum sentence for dealing mephedrone, a class C drug, is eight years in prison. Mephedrone is an amphetamine-like stimulant, which was sold predominantly in Britain as a plant fertiliser before being outlawed. Although it is illegal to import mephedrone into New Zealand, it is available over the internet. Known as Miaow, it can induce hallucinations and make users feel excited. But it can also cause nose bleeds, nausea, vomiting, blood circulation and heart problems, paranoia, fits, delusions and memory loss. Although it did not rival methamphetamine use, police were seeing more mephedrone and less ecstasy in drug busts. People are purchasing substances and often don't know what they are getting, the potency or whether it's been laced with other substances. It's a real concern, the amount of new \\\\\\\\\[ecstasy\\\\\\\\\] analogues appearing on the market. Drug Foundation executive director Ross Bell did not think people chose to buy mephedrone but said drug dealers were passing it off as ecstasy because it was easier to source. The concern was that people unknowingly taking the drug could be upping their dosage when it did not come on like ecstasy. If they have this thinking it's ecstasy, it could have completely different effects. Because we don't have any good research \\\\\\\\\[about\\\\\\\\\] these substances, it's quite difficult to give people accurate health and safety warnings. Wellington Hospital emergency medicine specialist Paul Quigley knew of a few cases in recent months — mostly to do with side-effects such as anxiety or insomnia — but many of those involved admitted to using mephedrone. It's been in Europe for about five years and was bigger than ecstasy for a while. It's been really strong here for about a year. International research into the drug noted it had been implicated in at least five deaths in Britain and mainland Europe since — but it had never been shown to be the direct cause of death. There had also been reports of non-fatal overdoses on the drug. Dr Quigley said mephedrone was particularly risky for people with blood pressure problems and could cause epileptics to have fits.
