Cape Drepanum — sitting on the west coast of Cyprus, visitors flock to its ancient churches and basilicas. Yet hidden out of sight is a fabulous coastal area with something for everyone in the family. Over two visits, we explored the area. Cape Drepanum was the first place we visited post-lockdown, the same day as the cave church in Kallepia. I was drawn there by the promise of tombs but knew little else about the area. I knew it as the place with the big church — Agios Georgios. The modern church dominates the landscape. Near it is a car park and the entrance to an archaeological park that contains the ruins of ancient Roman basilicas. There is also the medieval church of St George next to it — this used to be a place of pilgrimage. It appears that this is the destination, the end of the road, the area that everyone has come to visit. It continues, disappearing out of sight over the brow of the hill. It leads to a coastal area with rock pools, a small harbour and a tiny beach. Look behind you, back the way you came. There, staring back at you from the cliff face are the numerous gaping mouths of ancient tombs. Before exploring, we had a picnic in the shade of a rocky overhand on the far side of the beach. Goobie loves rock-pooling and Herc joined in too. They quickly found hermit crabs, whelks and small fish. Take care, though. The rocks can be very slippery in places, so sea shoes are a must. North of our picnic spot we discovered more rocks that were great for scrambling over. They also led to the first tomb that was staring invitingly at me from beneath the restaurant on the top of the cliff. It was fun climbing over the rocks, finding hidden nooks and crannies. It reminded us of Crete a couple of years ago. So I scooted up the cliff side on my own to reach the first tomb. I discovered that access was totally blocked by thick bush. It was so thick, you could have trodden on a curled-up viper without even seeing it. But no worries, there were plenty more tombs to explore. These tombs were encircled by an old chain-link fence. I hopped over a squashed bit and began to explore, wading through tall, yellow grass to reach each tomb. After the hot climb to reach them, the dank interior was blissfully refreshing. Many of the tombs were similar, though at the south end of this cluster there were some pretty large ones, stretching some way into the cliff. These had small rooms off to the side. And they smelled of marijuana. Next to these large tombs, I noticed an open metal gate and steps cut out of the rock, leading up to Agios Georgios at the top of the cliffs. So no need for climbing cliff sides like I did. You will find the steps at the very edge of the cliff, behind the modern church. To the south of these steps are some tombs that look different from the others. Each have what looks like a small dromos leading to the entrance. Perhaps these were built at a different time. I headed back down the cliff to find my family. This final cluster were to the south of the cliffs and they looked far older. Some were massive. Who had built them? Archaeologists believe there was once an ancient Roman settlement on this site, around the time of Justinian I, AD. Ships transporting grain stopped here on their way from Alexandria in Egypt to Constantinople in Turkey. At the centre of this settlement the Romans had built the basilicas that are in the archaeological park at the top of the hill. We were exploring their necropolis. And that was it for our first visit. We had to head back to Matt and Herc waiting by the car at the foot of the cliffs. Three weeks later, we were back again. We started with the massive expanse of rock pools just the other side of the harbour. We hopped over razor-sharp rocks and looked for signs of life in the pockets of water. Pretty soon, Goobie spotted fish and hermit crabs. As we walked closer to the sea, this place felt like an alien landscape. Dark rocks, mini waterfalls, weird-shaped stones and terracotta beneath the water. There was a strange energy here. At the centre of this area is a huge pool that is different to all the surrounding pools for one reason — the water is as warm as a bath. At first we theorized that this was because the pool was further inland and not fed by constant cooler sea water. Goobie and Herc loved it. Then I unintentionally trod in a small indentation and had to quickly take my foot out. The water was hot, properly hot. Herc trod in one and it made him cry. How was it that the deeper pockets of water in this pool were hotter? On to the final part of the Cape — the area to the south. From the road this just looks like a flat expanse of dusty earth, ending in a drop-off with some large rocks scattered in the sea. Have a closer look. Nature had made a cove that was perfect for toddlers to play in! Beneath were smooth rocks and still water. We could barely get Goobie and Herc to eat some lunch before running in. A word of caution here. While the water is shallow, the rocks are very slippery in places, so wear sea shoes. There are also natural channels cut into the sea bed which causes the depth to change suddenly. Not a problem for older children but toddlers need close supervision. Goobie spotted lots of little fish and he and Herc enjoyed climbing rocks, exploring nooks and using the slippery rocks as a natural slide. They loved it! Suddenly I noticed a darker part of the rock at the far end. Could it be the entrance to a cave? I ran off to have a look. I waded in — and saw that I was in a fabulous sea cave complex, complete with numerous chambers, skylights, windows, nooks and crannies. The cave was a bit intimidating, actually. Waves exploded out of a cave window. I imagined getting pulled in and being sucked into an underwater exit on the opposite side. I decided to take a look up top. You can reach the top of the caves by climbing over massive boulders. Someone has helpfully painted arrows on the rocks to show you the easiest route up. Still, it was tricky climbing with the heavy Nikon. The top was covered with sharp, pitted rock that sloped steeply towards the sea. Salt-encrusted hollows gleamed white across the bizarre landscape. And then I saw the cave skylight. It looked very man-made. If so, who bored such a deep hole in the rock? And why? This was hands down our favourite part of Cape Drepanum. After climbing down from the rock, I met Matt who cheerfully stepped out of the cave window. He then disappeared and reappeared from the far end of the cave complex a few minutes later. While Goobie and Herc played nearby on the shore, I waded into the cave. You have to walk through a deep bit, but then you step up on to a ledge that takes you into the next chamber. The first chamber was fine, the water fairly still. But the second chamber was the human-eating monster, spitting out waves to catch you and suck you into its blue gullet. The cavern was filled with a deafening roar as the waves pounded the walls. I was a tad — ahem — nervous. There was a ledge running along the outer wall of Monster Chamber, leading to the window. No probs. Like most scary things, it was exhilarating. There were other chambers further along, but the ceiling was too low and the sea too rough to attempt to explore them. And the Cape Drepanum sea caves was our first of the year — earlier than expected too. As we left Cape Drepanum for home, I was buzzing. This was a place that truly had something for everyone in our family. Tombs for me, sea caves for me and Matt, rock pools for Goobie and the perfect little toddler cove for Herc. We loved it. Your email address will not be published. But take a closer look! Spot the tombs Before exploring, we had a picnic in the shade of a rocky overhand on the far side of the beach. I should point out that Herc had a clean t-shirt put on straight after this photo was taken. We have to be careful with his fair skin in the sun. The bum. So near yet so far But no worries, there were plenty more tombs to explore. Inside were holes in the floor, revealing tombs beneath. Tomb beneath I headed back down the cliff to find my family. They had arched alcoves and pits in the floor. See the roundish indentations at the bottom of the pool? This was where the really hot water was coming from. We drove towards the drop-off and parked. We looked over the edge and saw this: Nature had made a cove that was perfect for toddlers to play in! Finally, in they went, Yeronissos island watching over them. Finding a natural slippery slide Suddenly I noticed a darker part of the rock at the far end. It was a sea cave! But there was more to this than met the eye. The Blue Gullet Further along was a natural stone arch. Hard to photograph with all the boulders in the way. So of course, I had to do it too. The Access Hollywood co-host appeared on the conservative YouTube show, The Candace Owens Show, in June, where the commentator brought up this new trend where celebrities are coming out \[\] and saying that their child is picking their gender. Look, Im never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously, and I think if you come from a place of love, you really cant go wrong, Lopez responded. But at the same time, my God, if youre 3 years old and youre saying youre feeling a certain way, or you think youre a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think its dangerous as a parent to make that determination \[\] Its sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on. Its unclear why it took so long for social media to take notice of Lopez comments. The real dangerous action is when someone with a public platform uses bad science to speak against a marginalized and vulnerable group of children. On Wednesday the popular TV Show host backtracked and apologized. Fantroy becomes the 13th known killing of a black trans woman this year. The gathering takes place from 6 to p. Perez at These victims were killed by acquaintances, partners and strangers, some of whom have been arrested and charged, while others have yet to be identied. Some of these cases involve clear anti-transgender bias. While the details of these cases differ, it is clear that fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of color, and that the intersections of racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia conspire to deprive them of employment, housing, healthcare and other necessities, barriers that make them vulnerable. HRC Foundations Dismantling a Culture of Violence report demonstrates how anti-transgender stigma, denial of opportunity and increased risk factors compound to create a culture of violence -and provides clear ways that each of us can directly make an impact to make our society a safer place for transgender people. As is too often the case in the reporting of anti-transgender violence, many of these victims are misgendered in local police statements and media reports, which can delay our awareness of deadly incidents. In the pursuit of greater accuracy and respect for transgender and gender expansive people in both life and death, HRC offers guidelines for journalists and others who report on transgender people. Gildays comments on transgender troops were released by the Palm Center, a San Francisco based nonprot corporation. I am unaware of negative impacts on unit or overall Navy readiness as a result of transgender individuals serving in their preferred gender, Gilday wrote in response to prepared questions from the Senate Armed Services Committee. Gildays comments are another blow to the Trump administrations ban on transgender military service, said Palm Center director Aaron Belkin. Vice Adm. Mike Gildays statement undermines the primary rationale for Trumps transgender ban, which is those that need to transition gender threaten the readiness and cohesion of the force, Belkin said. Across three years of open service by transgender patriots including those who have transitioned military leaders have found time and again that such service is fully consistent with military readiness. Once again, uniformed leaders have conrmed that the Trump ban is indefensible. Last month Congress passed an amendment to restore transgender military service. According to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, these intolerable acts are on the rise. National media groups are catching on. More is being written about these episodes of insanity. Last week, Miami lost Kiki Fantroy. As the story shows, she was not the rst or the second transgender woman of color to become a victim this year. She was the 13th. The numbers are incredible, the stories unacceptable, the brutality and the deaths uncivilized. Transgender populations need more than safe restrooms. Their dignity needs to be respected, their lives need to be protected, and their voices need to be heard. In a world where homosexuals have endured much, transgender populations have encountered even more. Its been wrong. They are entitled to the same legal equality and full access to our laws that we all are. We dont make exceptions because someone is an exception. Within the circle, there must be justice for all. Laws must be passed which reduce or eliminate the restriction of access to proper identity documents that correctly reect a trans persons gender. We cannot prohibit transgender youth from full participation in their schools activities or programs. We cant have local ordinances on the books that deny transgender people access to any rights others may routinely have. We cant have a president abruptly deny transgender persons the right to serve our country in our military. It is just one more act that exposes the current president as a fraud on human rights. Unfortunately, Mr. Trumps neanderthal policies do not stand alone. At least 30 states allow for discrimination against transgender people in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Florida is one of them. While hundreds more localities have passed non-discrimination ordinances, which protect transgender people inside their jurisdiction, they did no good this past weekend in Miami. Once again, it falls to good and decent citizens to stand up and rise against an abusive king, a tyrannical government, a despot in the making. It falls on us to speak out every day, to assert our rights under the law. No one will do it for you. America came together as a community of emigrants two hundred and forty years ago. We came from foreign shores to be one people, together. E Pluribus Unum means out of the many, one. Our laws must reect our commonality, our equality, our shared vision not to restrict the rights of any, but to protect the rights of all. Last night, America celebrated what we call a National Night Out against crime. Let me suggest another day to celebrate a daily Day Out for universal equality for all. We can never let up. We can never be silent. Its on us. Like the characters in the musical Hamilton, it is time to rise up. To protect our souls, to secure our communities, we must. History demands of us nothing less. They are ugly. Photo credit: Christine Geovanis. PAGE 15 8. That was the reality we woke up to this morning after two mass shootings in less than 24 hours in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio left 29 people dead and more injured. The City of Fort Lauderdale extends our deepest sympathy to the innocent victims who were gruesomely gunned down. We stand strong with the cities of El Paso and Dayton and oer our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones impacted by these horric tragedies. Unfortunately, mass shootings are now commonplace in our country due in part to the ease and availability with which assault weapons can be obtained, coupled with the spread of hatred, bigotry, and racism. The incidents in El Paso and Dayton were the th and st mass shootings of That is unacceptable for a country founded on the principles of freedom, equality, and peace. I encourage everyone to continue to demand common sense gun control laws in an eort to prevent more bloodshed, and I call upon each of us to ght against the rising tide of hostility, hate crimes, racial discrimination, and injustice. Let us also make a special attempt to do something positive in our own community. Consider giving blood, making a donation, or volunteering to help those in need. City projects, budgeting and future planning take considerable involvement by residents, elected ocials and city sta. The proactive involvement by many in our community counteracts the divisiveness of the few. That divisiveness and acrimony can wear you down at times, but that is when one should take a step back to smile and be thankful. Those few moments of positive armation can be contagious and will be what makes life continually just better here. WMG The past few weeks have oered much material for me to easily slide back into perfecting the art of sarcasm in my twicemonthly writings for the Gazette. First and foremost was the disastrous water main break that caused mayhem for so many. Then there were budget meetings, misinformation on social media, code enforcement issues, Wilton Drive complaints, and so much more tempting opportunities. Temptation and peer pressure swirling around me, jostling me to pick up the quill and begin scribbling words of attack upon those in need a good public lashing, I struggle to set myself back down the path of positive thinking. Reviewing some of the comments made on social media, during Public Comments at City Commission meetings and overheard conversations around town, one could easily think that civilization has begun a downward spiral into the depths of smallminded selshness. I guess it all seems so much more real when we have a practitioner of these horrid traits serving as President, blasting out negativity on a daily basis. Luckily many in our community choose a more proactive approach to life. I was rather surprised at the volume and degree of nastiness directed at our city ocials over the water emergency last week. Perhaps it is the frustration over things we cannot control or the need to receive tidbits of information constantly every few minutes in our digital world. Having received the initial notice detailing the problem and estimating that it would exist for the next 24 to 36 hours, how could getting that same information texted to your phone every ve minutes make you more informed? I nd such overly frequent notications and constant interruptions to be just extremely annoying. Directing frustration for the many years of neglected infrastructure throughout Fort Lauderdale should be directed towards the City Hall located on Andrews Avenue, not the one located on Wilton Drive. Our city has done a great job in investment, planning and paying for the needed infrastructure projects that ensure future safety, demands and performance. We have also paid higher and higher rates to the City of Fort Lauderdale for our water and sewer needs. Unfortunately, for many years the City of Fort Lauderdale used much of that revenue to help fund their General Fund Budget instead of making the necessary and much needed improvements to their infrastructure. Thankfully, under new leadership of Mayor Dean Trantalis and others, the City of Fort Lauderdale is dancing to the beat of a new drummer, recognizing the many years of past neglect. This change in direction will not cause the necessary improvements to happen overnight. Unfortunately, those investments will take much time to bring infrastructure up to date along with the ability to meet growing demands. Surrounding cities and their many residents will have to keep their ngers crossed, hopeful to dodge future scenarios while improvements, updating and replacing aged infrastructure begin to take place. Even under the best of circumstances, tragedy, accidents or Mother Nature can cause disruption in our daily lives and safety. That is the time we need to come together, help our communities, and do whatever we can to get through. Unfortunately, some in our community looked to point ngers, demand personal attention and post very negative diatribes all over social media. Setting that aside for now, before allowing negative thoughts to consume my mind, I will move on to other news. Our city has done a great job in investment, planning and paying for its needed infrastructure projects PAGE 21 8. This time, a brief look at sales counts and inventory trends. First, sales. Per MLS, there were 47 closed sales of singlefamily homes in the Island City in the second quarter of This was a six-percent decrease from the same quarter in the previous year, and a percent decrease from 2Q As I have noted in previous columns, I believe it is best to consider sales on a rolling four-quarter basis, to account for seasonality. Thats what the sales bar chart here indicates. There were closed sales in the four quarters ended June 30, Thats a four-percent decrease from 2Q18, and an eight-percent drop from two years ago. So, sales are denitely slowing a bit. Now, for inventory. Ive also discussed in previous columns my frustration with the ocial inventory numbers, which I think are optimistic. As I result, I developed my own proprietary methodology based on my former career in Insurance Actuary-Land. Take a look at the inventory chart here. The line indicates the monthly inventory trend for single-family homes in WilMa going back two years. Pay attention also to the lightly-shaded area. As long as the line stays within that shaded area, I would consider the inventory level as balanced favoring neither buyers nor sellers. Above the shaded area would indicate elevated inventory, and thus more of a buyers advantage. Contrariwise, below the shaded area would indicate a tight inventory situation that would generally favor sellers. In other words, we are seeing fewer homes on the market as sales activity has cooled which is keeping total inventory in balance. PAGE 22 22 8. The bar posted the announcement on Facebook. The announcement also included a nal drink special: half priced drinks from open to close everyday. Goodbye messages poured into Facebook. Oh my rst bar I went to while moving here 8 months ago. The atmosphere, the people and sta made me feel home and loved. Im gonna miss you all, Gabe Galan wrote. While Rebecca Kathleen added: Im shocked and heartbroken. We were just there and I never would have saw this coming. Astaphan MD This was the best bar Ive been to ever and so many memories have been made. Thank you for all the endless laughs and smiles and wonderful conversations. One commenter had a theory on why the bar might be closing. The competition level on the drive is too intense for owners who dont have deep pockets to survive. As long as the bars are forced to basically give away their drinks to get people in the bar, this is going to happen eventually to many of them, Greg Phelps said. Believe me. Ive been in their shoes! PAGE 23 8. Sometimes, I even forget I am trans. Its always there in the back of my mind, but it doesnt inuence every decision anymore, at least not in the way it consumed me when I was rst coming out and medically transitioning. Right now, my wife and I are in the midst of a big change in our lives. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up and it will directly benet the future Im working towards doing almost exactly what I want to do and have been doing in a less ocial capacity for a long time. This position requires us to move from Lehigh, PA to Albany, about 4 hours north. My wife was also job-seeking and ended up getting an opportunity in a reproductive justice organization which will allow her to work remotely. Were currently selling our rst home and are under agreement on a new home in Albany. Its scary, exciting, and sad. We love where we currently live, and as an added bonus, were currently only a little over an hour away from my family which includes 5 nieces and nephews. This was not a decision which was made lightly, but everytime my wife and I sat down and did the math and played out all the various scenarios, it always came down to the decision that taking this new opportunity was right for us. So were leaping into the unknown. My days in the last few weeks have been lled with worry about transitioning out of my current job, listing our house for sale, weighing oers and negotiating, dealing with home inspections and radon tests, arranging moving company estimates, visiting houses in Albany, making an oer on a new home, locating boxes to start packing, and everything that this ridiculously stressful time entails. In one summer, my wife and I are leaving our current jobs, starting new jobs, selling our home, moving to a dierent state, and buying a new home. Our rst year of marriage has certainly not been a boring one, thats for sure. In almost every part of these large decisions, being trans has not been in the forefront of our minds. When I was rst transitioning, being trans was all I thought about. Every interaction I had was about wondering if they saw me as male, every time I looked in the mirror I was checking to see if I saw a man looking back at me or if I nally had beard hair, I researched all the surgeries and surgeons, I bought clothes to t my new body, and more and more. Everything was about being trans. One just has to look back at my Facebook during those years to see how all-consuming it was. During my interview for my new job they said, As far as we know, you would be the only trans person who works here. That feels like a lot of pressure. I cant speak for all trans people and I dont want to. While I am trans and incredibly proud of it, being trans isnt all I am. My days are lled with going to work, taking care of our new puppy, and learning how to support my wife in the way she needs me to. Our issues arent always because were trans. Our dreams and hopes and wishes arent all related to being trans. Being trans just means that there are things cisgender people take for granted that I never do. It means that I have dierent perspectives that I feel are worth sharing so that I can help lighten the load for the trans people coming along behind me. But really, being trans means Im just like you. Atticus is a trans man who advocates for the LGBT community through his work, trainings, presentations, and everyday encounters. A friend, Monica is the most intelligent person I have ever met. You dont know her. She and her wife, Amy have adopted 6 kids!!! Lets just say that Amy and Monica have chosen a journey that includes many experiences! Monica is remarkable at many things. This moment. On Trend. I went over their house for a nice family visit prior to my move to Florida and Monica used an expression, Check that box! Now you all dont know me, but I am a little out of tune with the NOW. According to the Urban Dictionary Check that box Implying that there is a list of boxes that can be checked in life, indicating the various experiences one has had, and checking o one of them. Various skin colors, sexual orientations, and physical features are all examples of boxes that can be checked o ones list. Recently I met a remarkable woman on the oncology unit. Her name is Trisha. She is Trisha and I have become close as she nears the end of her life. Speaking about the fact that we are NOT immortal but eternal can do that. We were sitting there and speaking of her death when she used an eerily similar expression. She said, When I rst joined my company, I checked all the boxes. You see, in her sadness at leaving this life, Trisha found solace and comfort in the fact that she is VERY well insured and that when she joins God, she will leave her family in a secure nancial position. As humans, as mortal beings, we take our comfort where we can. I rmly assure you that her 3 sons and her husband are not thinking about their nancial security! For her boys and for Tim, her husband, there are so many boxes left unchecked. Trisha will not dance at her boys weddings, or hold her grandchildren physically , or place her hand in their Baptismal waters. However, as Christians we are assured that Trisha will live on. Her boys will have families. Their kids will have families. And, their children will have families. All the while Trisha will live, her light there; guiding and loving her family with a power of which we can only dream. Check that box, Trisha! Human life is fraught with uncertainty and insecurity, and perhaps for this very reason we are tempted to strive for a measure of security and control over the vagaries of life through our own eorts or accomplishments. But, use caution never to accord nite things innite value. Choose for yourself a journey that includes many experiences! Live life to the fullest! As it states in Luke Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. Check that box! The only requirement? Be yourself. Those views, along with the high-quality fare mean that you can expect to pay a substantial price tag for dinner. The appetizers consist of the usual suspects; smoked salmon, fried calamari, crab cake, tuna tartare, assorted shellsh as well as Bahamian conch fritters. Salad options include a nicely presented bed of baby greens, Caesar salad, a Boston wedge salad with bacon and buttermilk-blue cheese dressing and a beet, pear, endive and walnut salad. Its also used to mean that something is stable and running in a smooth manner. That can certainly be said for the Even Keel restaurant, a fairly new in the past year , addition to the Fort Lauderdale dining scene. On a recent visit the restaurant buzzed with an energy that comes from a team working together at a top level. Even when screw-ups occur, as they did with our dinner, they were handled with such nesse that we didnt even mind. My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by treating ourselves to a nice seafood meal. My husband is a lacto-ovopescatarian, meaning that he eats, dairy and eggs and some sh, but is basically a vegetarian. We made our reservations online and in the comments section I mentioned that we were celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary. As soon as we gave our name to the hostess, we were greeted with a big smile and wishes for a happy anniversary. Color me impressed! We chose to dine indoors and were shown to a nice corner booth in the nearly deserted restaurant we were having an early dinner , although the veranda and bar were packed. The waiter also wished us a happy anniversary as we settled in for a nice relaxing evening. As we enjoyed our cocktail Thank Pier! Even Keels menu is divided into three sections; small and large plates, as well as pizzas from the wood oven. My husband managed to nd so many tempting dishes on the main menu that we barely glanced at the vegetarian menu, which consisted of a few pasta dishes and a couple of pizzas. The vegan menu offered up a couple of pizzas, a Panzanella salad and roasted cauliower. We began our meal with the Caesar salad, which for me, is always an indicator of the quality of the restaurant. My hubbys shrimp and crab bisque was topped with a dollop of sweet corn and crab salad and a savory whipped cream. Both dishes were perfectly prepared. We also opted for the breadbasket. Im normally peeved when a restaurant charges you for bread, but the grilled ciabatta and whipped honey made it worth every penny. Other small plate choices include crispy cauliower with blue crab, charred octopus, crispy brussels sprouts, and panzanella and kale salads. By the time we were nished with our appetizers and that wonderful bread, I almost asked them to pack up our entrees, I was completely sated. However, my fried shermans basket arrived, chock full of oysters, scallops, calamari and shrimp, so I pressed on. My husbands entre arrived seconds later, a beautiful plate of grilled scallops. They looked delish. However, he had ordered the lobster roll and hates scallops. Within seconds the restaurants manager appeared and apologized and promised to have the lobster roll brought out immediately. He also left the scallops for us. We were bafed by the mix-up, our waiter had repeated my husbands dish back to him and had even explained Even Keels lobster roll is served hot, so we know he got the order right. By the time we could even nish wondering, my husbands dinner appeared, exactly as ordered. Other dinner possibilities include; a Wagyu burger with cheddar and bacon, chicken and seafood paella, hanger steak, grilled black grouper, red snapper, Chilean sea bass cheek, and short rib. We nished our meal with the sticky toffee cake and vanilla bean ice cream. You might also opt for Key lime pie, ice cream, chocolate pot de crme or a combination of roasted bananas, rum caramel, coconut ice cream, toasted coconut, and walnuts. The kitchen sent out a plate decorated with chocolate spelling out Congratulations on your 39th Anniversary, We got a big kick out of it. Auditions August 2 4 www. Bit, a new lm by writer and director Brad Elmore, is one of the rst to feature a transgender protaganist portrayed by a trans actor. Nicole Maines Supergirl stars as a trans teen who becomes entrenched with a mysterious group of punk feminist vampires hellbent on ridding the streets of predatory men. The movie was selected to close the Popcorn Fright Nights summer horror lm festival, Aug. Most R-rated movies are geared toward year-old boys or at least coded that way, Elmore said in a phone interview from Los Angeles. I wanted to make an R-rated movie for young girls: fun, strange and gory, occupying a midground between Lost Boys and Jem and the Holograms. The lmmaker took a risk, centering the plot around a transgender teen. I was just so tired of a lot of movies wanting a pat on the back for including a second or third tier character thats trans, he explained, noting that his city is one of the multicultural and diverse in the world. Anybody can make a sexy genre lm, but I asked myself how do I start there and have a trans lead without it being a trans plot? So many trans-centered movies are about gender transition or identity, he pointed out. The project came together quickly, in just a matter of months. Elmore had the structure of the story in mind, but still took time to research his characters. Since I was writing a bunch of characters outside of my experience, I had to do the footwork and vetting of the script, which took longer than the actual writing, Elmore explained. I wanted to make something fun, but with characters that were real. They have to feel real to writer and to the audience. The fun comes from the situations and not the characters winking and nodding. Maines, a trans actor who recently broke onto the scene, was denitely a catalyst in the successful completion of the lm. Shes key to everything. I saw a bunch of tapes and auditionsit had to be a trans person playing a trans person or whats the point? Elmore asked. I skyped with her and we hit o. Shes a very charismatic person. Really, it was a no brainer, she was perfect. And Maines brought her A-game: Theres a lot of pressure for a young actor to go from one role in a TV show that is a minute long to the lead in a movie where youre in every scene. Thats a lot of pressure and she could handle it, he added. In addition to Bit, Popcorn Fright Nights will premiere 73 lms including 10 world premieres from 16 countries, and bringing together established lmmakers and emerging new voices to its annual celebration of the genre. Local theater producer and director Erynn Dalton will present her lm directorial debut with The Gravedigger on Aug. Dalton, founder of Abyss Productions and Wilton Theater Factory, adapted the acclaimed play, utilizing a classic horror storys legacy as the thread for an absorbingly original tale about a tragic monster. The lm was shot earlier this year in her Wilton Manors theater. Arnold Popcorn Fright Nights runs Aug. Tickets and a full schedule at PopcornFrights. Credit: Provocateur. PAGE 33 8.
