Germany will not be sending any more ships to take part in the anti-people smuggling operation Sophia in the Mediterranean Sea, according to a senior military officer. The decision means frigate Augsburg, currently stationed off the coast of Libya, will not be replaced early next month, Bundeswehr Inspector General Eberhard Zorn told members of the defense and foreign affairs committees in the German parliament. The 10 German soldiers currently working at the operation's headquarters will, however, remain until at least the end of March. The European Union launched Operation Sophia in to capture smugglers and shut down human trafficking operations across the Mediterranean, as well as enforce a weapons embargo on Libya. Sophia currently deploys three ships, three airplanes, and two helicopters, which are permitted to use lethal force if necessary, though its mandate also includes training the North African country's coast guard. The Bundeswehr reported that, since its start, the naval operation had led to the arrest of more than suspected human traffickers and destroyed more than smuggling boats. But Operation Sophia's efforts have largely focused on rescuing thousands of refugees from unseaworthy vessels attempting to get to Europe. According to the Bundeswehr, Operation Sophia has rescued some 49, people from the sea, while German soldiers had been involved in the rescue of 22, people. Read more : Mediterranean refugee rescues spark EU dispute. The operation has caused some friction within the EU, particularly with Italy, where the headquarters are located, and whose Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has threatened to close ports to the mission. Salvini, chairman of the far-right Lega Nord party, demanded on Wednesday that the mission had to change, arguing that the only reason it existed was that all the rescued refugees were brought to Italy. This is opposed by other EU member states, particularly Poland and Hungary. Italy's position drew a prickly response from German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, who accused Sophia's Italian commanders of sabotaging the mission by sending the German ship to distant corners of the Mediterranean where there were 'no smuggling routes whatsoever' and 'no refugee routes. Fritz Felgentreu, ombudsman for the Bundestag defense committee, told public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk that Italy's refusal to let migrants rescued from the sea disembark at its ports meant the operation could no longer fulfill its original mandate. The EU played down Germany's decision. A spokeswoman for the bloc's diplomatic service, the EEAS, told the DPA news agency that Germany had not ruled out making other ships available for the Sophia Operation in future, a position confirmed by a German Defense Ministry spokesman. The decision sparked instant criticism from various quarters in Germany. Stefan Liebich, foreign affairs spokesman for Germany's socialist Left party, called the government's decision to suspend its involvement a 'tragedy. The Green party, for its part, had a more mixed reaction. But she added that Wednesday's announcement had happened 'for the wrong reasons. Otte also suggested a 'three-stage model' as a 'permanent solution for the Mediterranean. Every day, DW's editors send out a selection of the day's hard news and quality feature journalism. Damou Most of you might agree that at a certain point during your school days you wished you were working. However, when you are in the world of work you miss the times you were sitting in a classroom surrounded by your mates and you are listening to your favourite teacher. It has been a few years since I have left school but looking back it seems only yesterday. One friend in particular grabbed my attention, getting me thinking that I have not seen him in a long time. His name is David Bill, a year old guy from Quincy Village and the second child of a family of four children — three boys and one girl. In the Ministry of Education separated the primary school and the secondary school and the English River school became a secondary school. After his primary studies, David returned to the English River school to pursue his secondary education. But whenever I was in my circle of friends oh boy! After his secondary education David went to study at the Seychelles Polytechnic for two years to do his A-Levels, after which he went to the then National Institute of Education NIE to become a personal and social education teacher. However, David did not complete his studies at the NIE, managing to do only two years. David worked at Maia Resort Seychelles for only three months, then he applied for the apprentice scheme at the Seychelles Tourism Academy STA , where he did food production for one year. David worked there for about 17 months before moving to Pamplemousse where he spent three months only as it then closed down. After a brief spell of seven months at the Sunset Beach Hotel, David has for the past two years now been working on Fregate Island as a chef de partie for the Cold Section. He also used to do athletics for the English River Stars team but when he started working odd hours, he had to quit athletics. Now that he is working on an island, it has not been easy for David since he is father to a four-year-old boy. Despite his busy schedule and living at his work place, David likes to distract himself by playing video game, watching movies and any chance that he gets he goes fishing with friends. Having friends is very healthy for someone but sometimes there are some friends that will draw you into bad influences. I remember when I used to skip school especially on days or during the time that I did not have classes; some friends and I used to go and try to experiment different things. It was at that time that I started smoking marijuana. Looking at David I could tell he was ashamed of his behaviour and I had to ask him if he was still using drugs. I was charged and released the same day but later before the court I was given a fine. Going through this experience made me think that this is not the right path and it was like an eye-opener. Having been in such a situation, David has this piece of advice for young people who are using drugs. For me experience and willingness has made me come out of such an ugly situation. Finding someone to confide in can also help. She was always the hand that pulled me up when I was down. Thank you mum! David wishes to gain more expertise in the kitchen and maybe why not go back in the teaching field to teach cookery at the STA!
