I would take my own skis Nordica Enforcers but I will be making stops at other places on the way inc Hanoi and dont want to dragging skis around with me. Any advice would be really welcome. Thanks MJ. Aug 3, It is best to rent at one resort and take skis with you for the whole time you're there, then return them via the takkyubin courier service at the end. The only problem may be finding larger boot sizes. You'll love Japan, once you are there its much easier than you think. Enjoy and welcome to the forums. Jun 2, 7, 4, myokoskiresort. Going to Shiga or Nozawa first? There are some shops with really good gear in Nozawa. This is the new stock being unpacked last week. Last edited: Nov 24, Gibbsy, Thanks for the welcome. I will definitely be taking my own boots. MG, Shiga is first and seems to be the place where there is more doubt about there being a decent choice of gear. I know there's lotsa powder in Nozawa but those skis in your picture look really wide. Cheers MJ. Sep 26, 34 2 8 Nagano,Japan. Which area in Shiga Kogen will you be staying? Click to expand I think you are right about it. You can bring your Nordica, and when it's really deep day, you can go get fat skis at ski rental shops. I'll check on Shiga Kogen ski rental shops to see what they have. I'll go up Shiga Kogen often and I need to do research for my guests anyway. Let's you know when the season really kick off. Cheers, Kaz. Jan 1, 78, 50, 1, Melbourne Australia, often in Austin Texas. Thanks Kaz, Nozawa doesn't seem like a problem but any information about the Shiga situation would be really appreciated. Sandy said:. I haven't hired anything at Shiga Kogen, but don't get stuff at the very Japanese hotels, as their gear is generally old crap. The Shiga Kogen Prince hotel should be ok. When are you there exactly?? I'll be at the Prince Hotel from 19th - 27th Jan, and I have some friends who need to hire, so I can take a look. Jun 2, 2, central coast. Randy Simon First Runs. Jan 7, 5 0 1. I am traveling in Asia for my honeymoon from the U. We are currently in Beijing, leaving for Tokyo tomorrow. We will be headed to Nagano on Sunday the 12th and planning on skiing at Shiga Kogen on the 13th. We are staying in Shibu Onsen, so I understand we will need to find transport to the ski area Is snowcan or the Prince Hotel better for equipment rental? Anywhere else I should look? Also which part of Shiga Kogen offers the best snow and terrain? Any info is much appreciated. However, Japan doesn't generally offer a North American type ski experience. Transport at Shiga is by bus. Last edited: Jan 7, Hakuba looks great, unfortunately since we are staying in Shibu Onsen I think Shiga is the only way for us to go. I'm not expecting that it will rival skiing at home, I'm so lucky to ski Vail every week, just want a new experience. Which Shiga report equipment do you think is best? Do you think that Snow Can offers the best rental gear in Shiga? Shiga: Very limited options as others have suggested. Virtually all the skis offered were short or less and narrow. It seems that as virtually all skiing here is on groomed runs or on a very few bump runs these skis are reasonably appropriate. SnowCan had a few skis over 80 cm wide but their stock was so disorganised skis just heaped up one on top of each other leaning against the wall that looking for a pair you might want was very difficult. The Prince East has a limited range but my understanding was that skis hired from either site could be exchanged at the other or at anytime in the rental period which is something SnowCan charges extra for. I would go with the Prince rentals. Nozawa : Definitety more choice here which is appropriate as the types of skiing available seems more varied without Shiga's apparent obsession with grooming everything all the time. Not much in the 85 to wide all round type ski if thats what you want. I couldnt recommend Nozawa Holidays ski rentals. The guys there are really friendly and helpful but they dont really seem to have much variety beyond standard rental skis. Only open limited hours and a bit away from slopes are other disadvantages. If you are going to hire skis in either of these resorts know your desired binding DIN setting and check your rental bindings are set to it and also to the correct boot sole length for your boots. Having watched ski fitting at a few places I thought the general attitude was casual at best. Aug 10, 1, Darwin Australia. My mate will need to hire at Ichinose Diamond ski area. We are staying at Chalet Shiga. Any recommendations? Prince hotel a long way away I think. Thanks Sandy. We get there Feb 22nd. Might see you there? Will you be in your normal disguise? JoeKing Old n' Thrusty. Jul 24, 24, 11, 1, a galaxy far, far away. The skis I hired from Prince east this time were absolute garbage. No range, -waaaay- over priced and the guy was getting to be downright rude by the end of eight days. Use only if you are staying there at that hotel, you want to pay for convenience of access to a so-called rental shop and you are a beginner skier, then I suppose you can do that and suck eggs. The hi-performance skis I was given were shocking. I can't imagine what the regular skis would be like. Yes, all the three wings will offer service, but what's that expression about a silk purse? And saying to me that 'the snow is sticky today, wait 'till tomorrow' make me consider wrapping the skis around the guy's skull. There's at least one hire shop I saw in Inch. Suggest you try that. But I'm going to be calling out the ski hire at Shiga Prince East. If I hadn't hired much better skis from a 'real' rental store in Nozawa the previous week, I would have probably gone home thinking the problem was me. If anything I've written here is unclear, PM me and I'll be more than glad to embellish. We rented there, and the selection was decent. So if you're friend's feet are smaller than mine he will find a good enough selection at SnowCan at Ichinose Diamond. Rent in Noz. Takkyubin back from Shiga at the end of the trip. The rental in Noz will be able to include a takkyubin return form. Some of the skis in Shiga didn't fit my boots either. I forgot to mention. Thanks for the info guys. My mate just bought new boots. I think he said boots. I guess we try Snowcan first. Dr Phil is just at the turning point of starting to be able to ski properly so I certainly dont want to set him back. He has had enough disasters in Japan he doesnt need any more. He may have to start counselling himself! We are going to Noz after Shiga Gibbsy. Only at Shiga 3 days for recon. JK do you want the good doktor to hunt down your man at Prince East. He could give him a real talking too in his 3 words of Japanese. JoeKing said:. Don't get me wrong. The Prince East staff are great, mostly. The front desk particularly. From confirming my Chou taxi ride outta there to airport and also reaching out and advising me about the unclaimed laundry tickets Top notch. It's that Claytons ski shop I have it in for. The prince west had just more of the same skis but with the problem of not being able to fit my Monty Python sized foot. To tell you the truth, this is one downside to hiring off the beaten track from a western POV I've been to a lot of 'off the beaten track' places, and if you think the gear at the Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel is bad, you should see the 'in house' gear in Typical Japanese hotels Honestly, it's shocking!!!!! One time, a girl now a friend was looking at her boots and skis wondering how to click them in. The binding length was about 3cm longer on one than the other!!! I had a screwdriver in my daypack, and adjusted the length and DIN. Now when friends hire at these places, I check everything including release. I'd bring my own skis in these cases Bought a new set of complete gear today! If you thought I was a bit harsh about these bloody ski hire vendors around the world. If they are going to persist in ripping me off and now force me to lug all this gear around, then all previous pot shots are, frankly, friendly fire. But now, gloves are off. I haven't made this decision to carry gear lightly. I've had a few interesting chats with some in the business here in Candinaivia. Hire shops: Party is over. I am here to F it up. Cos U F'd it up for me. Only fair. Hired skis that nearly killed me last year. Last edited: Feb 16, Those skis you had at Shiga Kogen may have been fit for hard pack, but not for the powder you should expect there. What did you get? All rounder Sal q98 And no. You saw them. OK, they were crap off the sides of the run. I can't blame the ski for that. But hopeless on groomed. Slow and grippy. Lousy edge. If only there was a better range for the price of the hire and the price of staying in the apparent 5 star hotel. But nup. Are you saying my criticism is misguided? They were the best this stupid punter could scratch up in an afternoon. We -could- have spent the next morning 'shopping around'. But my bud deemed that to be a waste of time. And he could have been right. Did I mention it is snowing here in Canada? That's a sore point. Been taking some great pics though.. Not as good as the shots you'd take, cos I'm wringing every last pixel out of a gopro You must log in or register to reply here. Similar threads C. Never been before need advice Shiga Kogen area.
