Ski - Flaine - Janvier 2009

Buy ganja Flaine

To my right, the early-evening sun casts geometric shadows across stark concrete buildings. To my left, snow sparkles on perfect Alpine peaks. But that was the idea. The plan was to build a highly functional ski utopia, where exceptional skiing and art were accessible to all. A pioneer of its time, this was the first resort in France to install gas, snow cannons and cable TV. Within a few years of the grand reveal, Flaine started to lose its sheen as modernist concrete architecture plummeted out of fashion. Today, like much of the original accommodation here in the centre, it appeals to families and budget skiers with its convivial, no-frills feel and easy access to the slopes and shops. But the main reason they come is for the skiing. We floated up towards the mountaintops in a cable car and, 12 minutes later, I stepped outside at 2,m to a mind-blowing view. And what a ski area it is. Forests cloak the slopes up to 1,m, vast deserts of snow blanket the higher altitudes. The slopes are varied and fun, from the Gers bowl the place to head on powder days to a network of blues that criss-cross the domain from top to bottom. There are some lovely ski itineraries too, such as the forest-fringed Marvel run, and the 14km Piste des Cascades, one of the longest blue runs in France. I completed this in a respectable but thigh-burning 45 minutes, cruising through a nature reserve to the historic village of Sixt. With its avant-garde artwork and super-convenient layout, much of the Boissonnase vision still rings true. And with skiing this good, Flaine will always be world-class. The resort of Flaine is finally being hailed as a modernist marvel. Lucy Grewcock. Saturday December 29 , The Flaine ski resort. A Picasso sculpture.
