The Secunderabad club in hyderabad is steeped in colonial history. Today the club is an efficiently run machine with members all drawn democratically from different segments of Hyderabad, a far cry from the white-skin domain when set up. The mixed members lounge has charming frescoes on the wall and therein lies a tale. Legend has it that Sir Cecil asked M M Kaye and her sister to paint this as they were getting bored with the slow social pace of the British Cantonment. The original painting moves from the staircase to the eastern wall with 5 panels and then to the Southern wall. Unfortunately the Northern side fresco does not exist anymore. As per her own writing Kaye confessed she had painted the nymph shown in these pictures scantily dressed which so shocked the stuffy British members that she had to paint-over more modest clothes on it!! This frescoes were badly damaged and subsequently redone in by contemporary artist Sanjay Ashtaputre in the art noveau style of French painting made famous in the 19th Century. Built under the patronage of Nawab Asaf-Ud-daulain It is an example of Awadhi architecture. My love of books started early. But my favorite book is one I found in upper elementary. The mystery itself was predictable and the build-up to the first murder was slow. This one was fast-paced, both character and plot-driven. As always with Russian novels whether classics or current ones, it takes a while to figure out the triple names for each character, better to read than listen to it, to keep track of the characters. An enjoyable, suspenseful mystery especially for the setting in the Rift Valley and its captivating haunting atmosphere. The setting is stronger than certain characters. Of course, colonist views spread throughout since all main characters are British settlers. Still, midway reading this one. Started it with the English version then switched to the French, thinking, misguidedly, that it will be easier to understand all the Latin! Eco drops a new one in the mix. So far it seems the history part of the novel is stronger than the mystery. I did a meme! Got a gorgeous hardback of one of my fav kids book for my birthday my 80s paperback I got as a present in the 80s is falling apart. I highly recommend, making princess tales badass and three dimensional way before Elsa. Retro book of India meets old cards from Finland both including a castle feat.
