After reading some of the reviews, I feel the need to defend this guidebook. Complaining that there's no information on anything that ISN'T Athens or within the Peloponnese would be like buying a guidebook titled: 'Italy: Venice and the Veneto' then complaining that there's no information on Rome or the wine region including Tuscany. The book itself is tremendously informative, well-written and beyond useful. Most people traveling to Greece consider Athens a stopover city where they go to see the Acropolis and leave for the islands within 48 hours. Rick Steves does an excellent job of listing other interesting sites within Athens that deserve attention and can quite frankly take days to see. Rick also does a good job of informing you that Greece has more to offer than just Athens, Santorini and Mykonos. The Peloponnese sounds so interesting that on my next trip to Greece I plan to rent a car and spend at least three days exploring the region. If you want more detailed information on Athens and the Peloponnese, this is the guidebook for you. If you want more information on anything that ISN'T Athens or found within the Peloponnese, there are other guidebooks that cater to your specific needs. We bought this book for our upcoming trip to Greece. Like all of Rick Steves' books, it is not very thorough. He will go into minute detail about one area, and then skip vast other areas that should be covered. He needs to rename his books to not include the name of the country when it only covers certain cities. Good guide for Athens. Not a guide for Greece at all. Says nothing about Thessaloniki and Macedonia, the Northern region. The book title is very misleading. Rick Steves is a veteran traveler that provides great information for people going to Europe. This book focuses on Athens and a couple islands so please verify it covers the areas you are interested in. For islands not covered by this book I simply looked on YouTube to get a great idea of the feel and look of those places. Rick never fails to provide excellent information. If you purchase this, you do not need his separate Athens guide book. The island chapters include small maps of the principal towns. Extremely informative and well organized. Plenty of good advice, maps, graphics and tips. Buy it a month before you leave and be prepared for a memorable vacation full of history and pleasure. I stayed for 3 weeks. It worked out perfectly. I did not need to pay a professional guide for their ideas. I saw so much history in 21 days I could not believe it. I knew exactly what to do and how to do it. Do not forget Italy and Rick Steves book. The Rome version is also a must. You can also watch his numerous shows and podcasts on Greece, which I did in detail. Great info on best itineraries, sites to see, and enough history to make it meaningful without becoming a PhD! Everything from airports, transportation, hotels, walking tours, food, culture and packing tips is spot on perfect. This book made it easy to plan every detail of a 2-week DIY tour! In addition to the printed walking tours, they offer free audio tours you can download to your phone and listen as you walk. The audio tour of the Acropolis was the best! I am fan of the TV shows and have used Rick's books for other countries as well and they are all great. I am so disappointed with this book. When polled, family and friends said that Meteora and Crete were must see locations. Crete is mentioned in one sentence and Meteora, which seems stunning, historically and religiously significant, plus a day trip from Athens is not mentioned AT ALL. Thank you very much to Rick Steve's and team for this amazing edition. My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Greece this summer to Athens and Santorini. He gives such wonderful detail that helps you 'travel with purpose' and appreciate better what you'll be visiting. So much clarification on historical timelines, art history, transportation tips, and what not to miss. His suggestions have really helped plan our itinerary and change our perspective on a few things that I think will really enhance our journey and help us maximize our time! He really does have the best ideas. We have always saved far more than the books cost. My advice - listen to what he says. He really knows how to travel on a budget. You are the best Rick Steves!! This guide provided excellent pointers and facts to make my trip to Athens and the Pelopennese informative and enjoyable. I followed most of the suggested routing both for the walking tours as well as the drives. I stayed in several of the recommended accommodations and was not disappointed. I complemented its information with comments on Tripadvisor which often coincided with Rick Steves' advice. Lots of information but I found it very hard to navigate I would not buy another of this type of book. He does a great job including art history and exciting food to eat. Explore similar books.
