Метод заключает ся в окраске незафиксир ованных бактерий мет иленовым синим при последующе м окислении с помощью красной кро вяной соли или переки си водорода и докраске основным ф уксином. С помощью этого метод а бактерии распредел яются на 2 группы: на двоякоокра шивающуюся группу синезеленым и даже черным у клеток с активным метаболизмом и красн ым у инактивных клеток и на группу, у ко торой это явление не наблюдается. Мы установили, что инактивность не д олжна обязательно означат ь смерть микрооргани зма. A description is given of a new method of staining, for differentiating metabolically active from inactive micro-organisms, as the basis for resolving the conditions of their growth and resistance and the influence of drugs and disinfectants. The method consists in staining non-fixed bacteria with methylene blue, then in oxidation with potassium ferrocyanide or hydrogen peroxide and in staining finally with basic fuchsin. By using this method the bacteria are divided into two groups, a group in which double staining occurs bluish-green to blue in metabolically active bacteria and red in inactive and a group in which this does not occur. The method was verified by studying the influence of certain physical and chemical factors on the bacteria before using the method, by ascertaining the relationship of the microorganisms staining bluish-green and red to their ability to grow, by observing staining of the micro-organisms at various stages of their growth and by establishing an index the proportion of bluish-green staining to red staining organisms , and by ascertaining the relationship bofh forms to the living organism and to mortality in mice.
