I like that analogy. What many people don't seem to realize is that metabolically, there is very little difference between HFCS and sugar as in the white refined beet or cane sugar that everybody is familiar with. Sugar is sucrose, a disaccharide, consisting of a molecule of glucose and a molecule of fructose joined together. So the amount of fructose in HFCS is only a slight amount more than in sugar. With such a small difference, it is doubtful that there is any significant difference in either the taste or the health effects. To the organic chemist, they look a bit different, just as to the pedestrian crossing the road, a truck and a bus look a bit different. But the effects of HFC and sugar are similar, just as the effects of the truck and bus are similar. So, it seems reasonable that the main difference in flavor between Mexican Coca Cola and British or American Coca Cola could be the water. Corn syrup is used in almost all beer and soda-pop made in Canada and the United States. The original Labatt 50 recipe used to produce Cristal doesn't use corn syrup, but still uses cane sugar. I expect the same for Cuban bottled soda-pop too, but would expect Mexican produced Coke to use corn syrup.
