The high altitude and the extensive snowmaking network can guarantee great snow conditions all winter long. A third of the entire ski area is covered by the network of snow cannons, and that network itself features a stunning hectares of marked runs. That means km of slopes, 59 lifts, 81 runs of which 13 black, 29 red, 26 blue, and 13 green ski runs resulting in the largest ski area in the Southern French Alps. The Giant Zipline of Serre Chevalier opened this year! The zip line has a m vertical drop bringing you from 2,m to 2,m above sea level. You can leave your skis in a safe place next to the zipline and take the chairlift back up. You can find all the information and prices here. There are no nasty overpriced frozen pizzas with a coke in Serre Chevalier. In the valley, you can find many charming, and reasonably priced, restaurants serving French specialties with friendly service. What pleasantly surprised my taste buds was the great food we had in the altitude restaurants on the slopes. These were my favourites:. This season is a particularly festive one because it has been 80 years since they opened the very first cable car that turned the valley into a skiing paradise.

Serre Chevalier 2022: Why Should You Visit?

Serre Chevalier - Best off piste skiing in the world? Serre Chevalier - Off Piste skiing at its best Forget the overally tracked runs of Tignes, hiking for hours in Courchevel or heliskiing in Alaska. Serre Chevalier beats them all hands down Ok maybe not the heliskiing in Alaska, but who can really afford that without being sponsored by Burton? I fell in in love with Serre Che a few days after landing. I was shipped out there at the last minute for my first season without really knowing too much about the resort, apart from that its pretty French and they love their powder. Both these points proved true straight away, I spent most of the first week snowed in sat drinking fresh coffee and eating smelly cheese with my new housemates. When the snow finally decided to stop the results were incredible, buckets of the stuff everywhere! Bearing in mind this was mid December the snow was deeper than I had ever seen in my life! I was soon able to strap on and explore my new, extremely white surroundings. Now you'd think with such heavy snow fall that anything decent would have been hiked and tracked by midday, but this is simply not the case. For some unknown reason Serre Chevalier is unexplored by the masses. More to the point, you don't need to hike at all to get fresh, untracked powder! For lift served off piste you simply can't beat it. You can sometimes have real difficulty finding a piste when you get to the top of the lift! At first I found sitting on a lift that seemed to be leading nowhere a little daunting, but quickly grew to love it. La Cucumelle. But off course, as in every resort, there is hiking to be done, and obviously you can hike as far and as hard as you like. Personally I'm not a huge fan, but there are those who enjoy the climb more than the float down. The ' Legendary ' Cucmelle is the only real hiking I did that year, and to be honest it was quite pleasent, being more of a steep walk than a hike. After half an hour or so I was at the summit, enjoying the amazing views, and faced with the difficult decision of which fluffy face to decend. I chose the longest option and after my 15 minute dreamy decent I went and did it all again! But of course fresh snow doesn't last forever and sooner or later we all have to ride a piste. But Serre Chevalier has plenty of well groomed pistes and a nicely shaped park spread over an extremely large area hence all the off piste , that kept me and many others well occupied for over 5 months. Now not being overrun by Brits in search of a mental nightlife leaves Serre Chevalier without the abundance of pubs and clubs seen in all of the popular resorts. And what a blessing it was. Not that we didn't do more than our fair share of drinking. We just didn't have to barge through crowds of idiots wearing rugby shirts to get to the bar. In fact it was in this very resort that I discovered my favourite drink of all time. A Beverly Hills This is a reincarnation of my favourite drink at the time, a Long Island Iced Tea. Someone had the ingenius idea of replacing the coke with Champagne! Marvellous In short Go to Serre Chevalier. Ski some powder. Go to Mojos bar. Drink some Beverly Hills. Fall over.
