I am focused, living in the present and full of pure bliss. Prior to my trip to the Italian Dolomites , I had only been skiing in the Northeast of the United States and it has been such a dream of mine to shred glistening gnar in the European Alps. Nominated as the Best Ski Resort in the Alps in , Kronplatz is located in the Northern part of the South Tyrol region of Italy and not only is it famous for its skiing and winter sports during the colder months, it also makes for the perfect hiking, biking and outdoors adventure destination during the summer. What is cool about skiing in the Dolomites are that you could actually ski into different villages. Some resorts even allow you to ski into different countries such as Switzerland and Austria. At Kronplatz , you could ski into the charming Alpine towns of San Vigilio , which is where I stayed during my time there, and you could also make your way to Valdaora and Brunico as well as the neighboring ski resort in Alta Badia. As my first international trip of the new decade, I spent a full week in the Dolomites exploring the natural beauty of the South Tyrol region and experiencing all of the winter activities and experiences the Italian Alps are known for. The first part of my trip was spent in the charming Alpine town of San Vigilio where I got to stay at the awesome Hotel Teresa and participate in their nature adventures. During my time in San Vigilio, I also got to experience skiing the amazing slopes of Kronplatz! The last part of my trip was spent in Selva where I went skiing and explored the breathtaking mountains of Val Gardena. Skiing in the Dolomites is absolutely magical! Before I go into how I traveled around the Italian Dolomites, I want to admit that there is no easy way to get there, especially from the United States. I was thankful to have found affordable flights from Newark Airport to Zurich, Switzerland. Venice is the easiest and most cost-effective city to fly into if you are planning to go to the Dolomites. Other cities you could fly into, but will be more expensive, are Milan, Verona, Trieste and Bergamo in Italy as well as Innsbruck in Austria. Munich , Germany is another airport you could fly into, but it is a bit of a further drive. Another important fact to note is that public transportation in the Dolomites is almost nonexistent. You could find options for buses, but depending on where you go, public transit will take you much longer to reach your destination. If you are looking to see a lot within the Dolomites and not just stay in one location, it is best to rent a car like I did! It was around a 3. I got mine a week before I left for my trip and it took me 10 minutes. I highly recommend booking your rental car in advance, especially if you are looking for an automatic vehicle. When you arrive in the Alps, there are numerous ways to get to Kronplatz and what is awesome about the South Tyrol region is that they offer a private airport shuttle if you fly into Innsbruck, Munich, Verona and Bergamo. It is a very convenient option, but a bit on the expensive side. Staying at a hotel in the Kronplatz region will sometimes offer a private shuttle service or the entrance to the slopes may even be in walking distance to your accommodation. There are also bus services to and from the slopes. These buses could also take you to the slopes in the other towns as well. This ticket is super convenient as it entitles you to unlimited use of all public transportation throughout South Tyrol, including the regional railways and ski buses. Comprising a unique mixture of landscape, the Kronplatz region is the northernmost region of Italy. Not only is the Ski Resort of Kronplatz located in the Kronplatz region, the resorts of Klausberg and Speikboden also reside in the area. At first, I was a little confused because I literally thought to myself that I was going to lose my ski pass, but what is so cool is that you could keep this pass sealed up in your jacket or pants pocket. If you usually ski in the United States, it is a bit old school and you will get a pass that you need to attach to your coat zipper and a staff member will come around and scan it before you get on the lift. Hopefully in the coming years, things change lol. Like I mention above, the slopes are bit steeper in the Alps than they are in other parts of the world, so you definitely want to make sure you have your confidence. If you are newer to skiing or snowboarding or if you want to freshen up your skills and improve your technique at Kronplatz , there is an amazing ski school that offers a comprehensive selection of courses for all ages. You could take skiing or snowboarding lessons in a group or individually. In addition, a lot of the signs on the ski slopes of the Dolomites will either be in Italian or Ladin. Kronplatz is huge and there are so many great slopes and ski areas that it is easy to get lost. The Kronplatz app by Intermaps will provide you with a full map and you could also get news and information from the ski resort directly. You could also track your entire ski day and enter to win great prizes! On the app, you could also see which events are taking place at the resort, which lifts and slopes are currently opened or closed as well as the weather report. At the bell, you could catch stunning views of both the Italian Dolomites as well as the Austrian Alps. It is absolutely breathtaking! The bell can be visited throughout the entire year. Situated at the summit plateau of Kronplatz is the Messner Mountain Museum. It is dedicated to traditional mountaineering, which is strongly influenced by Reinhold Messner. This distinctive museum was created by Zaha Hadid and the views go beyond the borders of South Tyrol, Italy. This epic museum has four floors dedicated to mountain photography from the early days through present day. The Lumen Museum of Mountain Photography has an amazing exhibit that showcases historic images, digital innovations and spectacular scenography. This amazing museum is in partnership with National Geographic! One of the best parts about skiing in Italy is that there are charming little huts all around the mountain where you could ski right into and enjoy a plate of gnocchi with an Aperol Spritz or a plate or drink of your choice. It makes for the most refreshing beverage during a sunny day of skiing! Every region of Italy has a different cuisine and I absolutely enjoyed the traditional Ladin meals I had during my time in South Tyrol. To describe Ladin dishes, it is a nice mix of Italian and German cuisine. I talk more about Ladin culture in this blog post. Whether you are celebrating in a hut, at an umbrella bar or a pub, you will definitely have a blast! In the Dolomites, there are live bands, DJs and all different types of skiers and snowboarders having fun. During my time skiing in Kronplatz , I met up with the friends I made at Hotel Teresa and we had a blast skiing and enjoying the fun on the slopes. At Graziani Lodge , there was a local Ladin musician who provided entertainment for those enjoying lunch and drinks. We also got to enjoy some grappa a Northern Italian grape-based pomace brandy before we skied back down.
