The Steigenberger Coraya Beach Resort stands for club vacation at its best. Some like it, others avoid it. But if you want to go scuba diving in Egypt, there's no getting around it. In the following, we'll tell you how we liked it at the Steigenberger Coraya Beach Resort. The place is perfect for scuba diving, but less so for sightseeing. The Steigenberger Alaya Resort and several Jaz hotels are located right next door. The resort: We really liked the spacious resort with its rooms, all of which were decorated in an oriental Nubian style. Actually, almost all of Egypt is a brown, dry desert with no green plants. But here at the Steigenberger Coraya Beach Resort, there were so many pretty flowers and palm trees that had to be watered every day. We found the resort with its many yellow buildings very pretty not only during the day, but also in the dark, because the lighting created such a beautiful, romantic atmosphere. You could only feel at home here. Our room, the cleanliness and the housekeeping: We stayed a total of twelve nights in a room with a pool view, which was on the first floor. We were very happy with it apart from the noise coming from the pool. Our small terrace was also ideal for drying our scuba diving and swimming gear. The room was always clean and the very nice housekeeping did a good job at all times. Our minibar requests were also fulfilled to our complete satisfaction. Instead of the sugar water Sprite and Fanta, we only wanted carbonated water and Coke Zero to be refilled in sufficient quantities, which housekeeping then carried out for twelve days. On the first day after our arrival, we were even given a heart with pink flowers and a small souvenir. A few days later, there was suddenly an impressive swan on the bed. On the penultimate day, we even received a small farewell gift from our housekeeping employee. Housekeeping also very quickly understood what was going on when I didn't come out of my room for two days in a row and didn't want it tidied up. They only ever brought us new drinks - and toilet paper. So it seems that word has gotten around among the staff that European holidaymakers have to deal with gastrointestinal problems here in Egypt. And it seemed that this happened more often. The waiter in the restaurant also knew immediately when M said that I wasn't feeling well and he wanted to take food to my room. One last tip for choosing a room: If you prefer peace and quiet, you should not book a room with a pool view. The daily loud music at the pool and the cocktail-drinking vacationers unfortunately created far too much noise near the pool. Food and drink at the Steigenberger: We could choose between half board and all-inclusive. We always found the buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner very tasty and varied - and it was warm unlike in Mauritius two months previously. Vegans and vegetarians also got their money's worth here. We saved this visit until the last evening. It was important to adhere to the dress code in both restaurants. This was stricter for dinner than for lunch. For example, men were not allowed to wear sleeveless muscle shirts, shorts or flip-flops. Women were not allowed to wear hot pants or bare midriffs, but flip-flops were permitted. These were probably intended to cool you down a little. We'll talk more about gastrointestinal illnesses below. Our insider tip: If you arrive late in the evening at a time when there is no more dinner, then ask for food at reception anyway. Sandwiches with salad, egg, tomato and chicken strips were brought to our room at around pm, with cucumber, tomato and potato chips on the side. Even if you have planned a full-day trip to Luxor, for example, you can order lunch boxes for the day from reception. Good to know for divers: Breakfast was served from a. The resort also had various bars where we enjoyed the mostly non-alcoholic cocktails. Of course, there were still plenty of cocktails with alcohol, but we didn't want to get drunk and M he doesn't drink alcohol at all. All inclusive vs. All-inclusive actually paid off financially here at the Steigenberger Coraya Beach Resort because we had to drink a lot in the heat. The minibar, which we used free of charge and which was refilled daily, proved to be particularly advantageous. However, M almost always missed lunch during his scuba diving trips and I usually skipped breakfast. Thanks to the wristband, we didn't have to constantly give our room number and sign drinks bills after every meal, as we were used to doing in 5-star hotels. However, we found the sticky rubber band very annoying, especially in the heat, and always took it off in the room. The service in the restaurants and bars and the friendliness of the staff in general: In general, all the hotel staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. We were always served very quickly in the restaurants, which meant that we were even able to order two drinks during the meal. Even when I went to eat alone as a woman because M was still scuba diving, I was served very quickly this is not a matter of course, as I had experienced two months earlier in Mauritius. We would like to make special mention of our waiter Khaled at this point. Good to know: At reception, some!! If you spoke to them in English, they always had to get a colleague to translate first. Also, don't make the mistake of texting them in German just because they can say phrases like 'Hallo! That doesn't mean they can really speak German. Also good to know: On the day of arrival, we found an invitation on the bed from our assigned tour representative for the following day because he wanted to welcome us. We rather suspect that he wanted to sell trips. As we were not familiar with this procedure, we didn't go. We thought that the meeting was not obligatory and was generally voluntary for all new arrivals. We hoped that if two people were missing from the crowd, it wouldn't be noticeable. After we didn't show up at the meeting, a member of staff brought a letter to our room telling us that we had transferred our tour guide and that we should please turn up at reception at a certain time the following day. We then canceled this second appointment via WhatsApp, which was only possible because he had included his number. The invitation stated that the meeting was for questions, requests and excursion bookings. However, none of this was relevant for us. The pools: The hotel had three outdoor pools, one of which can be heated in winter if required. The pool where the pool bar was located was only very shallow, whereas the neighboring pool had a water depth of 1. There were even swimming noodles and a small pool library where you could borrow books to read on the beach lounger. Unfortunately, the three pools could only be used until sunset, so depending on the month, for example, only until in January or until around in July. The private sandy beach: The large resort had an metre-long private beach, but it was nowhere near comparable to the beaches in the Maldives or Mauritius. There were hardly any palm trees here and the sand was quite coarse and not so wonderfully white. We thought it was great that, according to the hotel, it was not allowed to reserve beach loungers. If a lounger remained unused for 90 minutes, the beach team reserved the right to remove the items and release the lounger for other guests. However, we did not check whether this threat was enforced. In addition to the free beach loungers, which were all lined up next to each other like in a typical club hotel, you could also rent free-standing beach beds and beach lodges for a fee. On a positive note, the individual loungers were always separated from each other by a screen, so that there was at least a little privacy among the hundreds of places. As the private beach section was located in Coraya Bay, which is sheltered from the wind, swimming and snorkeling was also possible here when there was a strong current out at sea. You didn't notice any of this in the bay. In the other section of beach outside the bay, where all the stone hearts were placed by tourists, swimming was prohibited due to the strong current. Our tips: We can highly recommend the XXL hammocks on the beach, where you can relax even after dark. A short walk to the jetty is also very worthwhile, in our opinion. Our tip for turtle lovers: there are two palm trees surrounded by a white fence near the wellness oasis. Two tortoises live inside, which you can see at any time. The house reef in Coraya Bay: Here you could not only swim, but also snorkel and dive. M, who was a diver on the house reef, raved about a completely intact house reef with healthy corals. He had never seen one like it before, not even in the Maldives. Even the animals here were much larger than anywhere else in the world, such as the huge titan triggerfish and clownfish. He was absolutely thrilled. Snorkeling on the house reef was a different story. There were so many holidaymakers on the surface in the marked areas that you could easily end up with someone else's fin in your face or stomach. People were really only getting in each other's way. What's more, you couldn't see much because the visibility was too poor due to all the plankton in the sea and the coral was too deep underneath you. BUT then we snorkeled in another area where the conditions turned out to be much better. Our insider snorkeling tips: 1. Go into the water via the snorkeling jetty at the signposted entrance, break through the barrier and swim straight ahead. You will then find a brown plateau on the right-hand side, a reef. You can also snorkel there, even if the area does not look like it belongs to the snorkeling zone. The snorkeling conditions were much better at this point. However, please do not swim on the reef, but only along the edge. In , a German snorkeler was attacked by a shark on this very house reef. Unfortunately, she died of her serious injuries on the way to hospital. Due to my fear of such attacks, I use the shark repellent bracelets from Sharkbanz. If a shark gets too close to me, it senses the magnetic field of my bracelet and turns away from me. An article about my Sharkbanz2 experience is linked at the end of this report. Incidentally, we found the large sign stating that there were no lifeguards on duty a little contradictory. Because there were lifeguards walking around everywhere with the T-shirt saying 'Life Guard' and there was also a lifeguard's high chair. The Coraya Divers scuba diving center: Marsa Alam is one of the world's top scuba diving destinations. One of the largest scuba diving centers here was 'Coraya Divers' in Coraya Bay, which was within walking distance of the hotel. If you didn't want to walk the minutes, you could also use the hotel shuttle, which shuttled there several times a day. Our tips: 1. It is best to book your scuba diving packages online in advance on their homepage to take advantage of the discount. If you don't have a scuba diving license, you can complete it on site or take part in an introductory dive. Snorkeling trips are also offered. Activities, entertainment and live music : Some like it, others hate it - the entertainment program at the hotel. We tend to belong to the second group. Various activities were offered six days a week: Beach volleyball, water aerobics, aerobics, a dance lesson, an Arabic lesson, table tennis, darts and boccia. There was also live music at lunchtime and in the evening. Knife throwers and sexily dressed dancers also demonstrated their skills. For certain activities, the loud music started at in the morning and ended at around Fortunately, there was always some peace and quiet in between. We have nothing against quiet activities, but this Mallorca feeling with Helene Fischer music and 'Hulapalu' by Andreas Gabalier is too much of a good thing for us in a Steigenberger luxury hotel. If your room is located directly by the pool, where the speakers are, the whole thing is even more disturbing. In addition, this loud party music was an absolute romance killer because you could no longer hear the sound of the sea. Why do adults have to be entertained around the clock in an adults-only hotel? We don't understand it! The various stores in the hotel: The hotel complex had several small stores where you could buy souvenirs, sun cream, postcards, cheap snorkeling equipment and oriental spices, among other things. The icing on the cake was the note displayed in the shop window saying in German how great the bags were. Note for all bag owners: Anyone entering France with a counterfeit product from a French luxury brand is liable to prosecution. In other words, the mere possession! The technology WLAN, electricity : As soon as we arrived, we noticed that the wifi in the hotel was sending a very weak signal and the internet was extremely slow. When logging into the hotel's own network, you were always asked whether you wanted to use the free or paid internet. For a 5-star hotel, we find it very miserable to 'rip people off' when it comes to the internet. We have never experienced anything like this in any other luxury hotel. As we initially assumed that the free internet was massively throttled, we asked at the hotel reception one evening about the prices for the fee-based internet. And then came the kicker, because the employee gave us an insider tip: we should definitely continue to use the free Wi-Fi, because the paid Internet wasn't any faster. He explained the weak signal by saying that the hotel was far too far away from the next largest town, Marsa Alam It is also slower when more tourists access it at the same time. At night, when everyone was asleep, the signal was still the best, as we found out for ourselves. So there were constant internet problems and the hotel was fully aware of this. It's unbelievable that they know this and still charge guests for it. It almost borders on fraud. Thanks at this point to the very honest, kind employee who shared this insider information with us. We also had occasional power cuts lasting minutes. When the air conditioning in all the hotel rooms and the jukeboxes were turned up, everything just broke down for a short time. Incidentally, you didn't need a power adapter, i. The hotel ambience: Actually, this hotel could have been sooo nice, because many of the aspects already mentioned were really outstanding. The frequent loud music, including German pop songs Helene Fischer, Andreas Gabalier, Kerstin Ott from in the morning until in the evening, was part of the club vacation experience. So we enjoyed the quieter hours in between or the entertainment-free day all the more. For package holidaymakers who only want to spend their entire trip at the resort and be entertained, this type of vacation might seem nice. For us, however, this is not the preferred way to travel and we only came to Egypt to go scuba diving. To be honest, we wouldn't have expected a 5-star hotel to be such a sound system and party bunker. We also disliked the German vacationers smoking and getting drunk in the pool. The tiresome topic of tipping: We think it's terrible when employees are conditioned like circus animals by certain vacationers, who get a treat in this case a tip after every trick. Unfortunately, this was already the case with certain employees, as we noticed. We luxury hotel connoisseurs can tell you that - apart from budget destinations such as Turkey etc. We have never experienced this in the Maldives or Mauritius, for example. If you condition the staff in this way, you don't have to be surprised or upset about their expectations regarding tips. I would like hotel staff to treat me in a friendly and courteous manner and to do this of their own accord, without having any calculating ulterior motives when it comes to tipping. Nobody should be nice to me just because they are secretly hoping to make money from me. We ourselves felt a little mentally compelled to give our housekeeping employee a small tip because he went to so much trouble and even brought us farewell gifts on the penultimate day. The price-performance ratio: In the summer of after the coronavirus pandemic, all destinations were completely overpriced, which was also due to global inflation and presumably also the war in Ukraine. Egypt is not normally such an expensive destination, but other vacation destinations were also charging such exorbitant prices at the same time. Staying at home was not an option. The following information would also be interesting:. Our vacation mood didn't start at the Steigenberger Coraya Beach Resort in Egypt, however, but on the Eurowings Discover vacation plane. Our direct flight from Munich to Hurghada lasted four hours , during which we were well entertained by the crew. Be honest: do you still listen when the safety instructions are talked through before the flight? To achieve this desired effect, you have to be very creative as a crew and sometimes take the unconventional route. A vacation plane is the perfect place to keep people happy. Would you like a small sample? At the end of the safety briefing, all the passengers even clapped loudly for him. He received another round of applause when he left. And the crowd also cheered when he landed - it couldn't have been more of a vacation plane atmosphere! Incidentally, only drinks and food were available for purchase on the entire four-hour flight. So it's best to take an empty water bottle with you to fill up after the security check and some cookies or something similar. Important tip: We also recommend early online check-in from home. This is the only way to guarantee that you will be seated together. If you check in too late at the airport, the best seats will already be taken, so you will have to make do with individual seats left over. This tip is particularly important for families with children. We had already received the entry cards during the flight, which we then had to hand in at the visa counter on arrival. However, as we didn't have any cash with us, we withdrew Egyptian pounds at the airport and paid with it. Our tip: Get your visa at one of the three counters on the right and only then go on to the stand of your travel agency. If you arrive there without a visa, they will stick one in your passport without asking and charge you 30 USD per person instead of 25USD next door. As there was no direct flight from Munich to Marsa Alam at our desired travel times, although there would have been an airport there, we had to fly via Hurghada. We then traveled another km to our hotel. Normally, the hotel transfer by bus would have been included in the price of the package tour. This would have taken between 2h30 and 4h, because it would have driven to all the hotels one after the other and distributed all the tourists bit by bit to their booked hotels. We opted for a quicker private transfer so that we could still 'catch' dinner at the hotel. Unfortunately, due to the minute delay of the plane, we still missed dinner. However, after politely asking the hotel, we were given sandwiches. Before our departure, however, we used the included airport transfer. As no other guests had to be taken to the airport by Schauinsland on the day of our departure, we even had the minibus all to ourselves. The best thing here was the scuba diving and snorkeling with the Coraya Divers scuba diving centre. With a bit of luck, snorkelers could swim with a group of dolphins or a dugong, for example. Divers experienced completely intact, colorful coral reefs and were able to encounter sharks at the legendary Elphinstone dive spot. You can find our separate article on scuba diving and snorkeling in Marsa Alam at the bottom of this page. A day trip to Luxor was also possible. We ourselves were on the road for 18 hours with a professional Egyptologist from Zakharious Tours and were picked up at in the morning. We can recommend our German-speaking guide Osama without reservation. The hotel even gave us lunch boxes for the trip on request. Lunch was also included in the excursion price. As there was no dinner at the hotel when we returned at 10 p. To take advantage of this special service, you have to let reception know in good time. Good to know: The travel agency needs a copy of your passport, hotel name and room number in advance via WhatsApp. Only when all this information is available can the provider apply for an official permit for the trip. If you only provide your room number the evening before, the application may be received too late by the authorities online and cannot be approved at such short notice for the following day. As soon as you know your room number, you should inform the agency as soon as possible. Our trip to Aswan was canceled due to late notification the evening before. If you also wanted to see Aswan , you could have combined Luxor and Aswan with an overnight stay on site. It wouldn't have been worth going there alone. We were therefore glad that our trip to Aswan was canceled because we applied too late. Quad tours in the desert were also offered, lasting hours. There was also a paid shuttle to Port Ghalib , where you could go shopping. The city reminded us a little of Venice with its canals and bridges. Basically, the Steigenberger Coraya Beach Resort is very nicely laid out, even if the private beach can't keep up with the Maldives or Mauritius. The food was also delicious and varied. In addition, the staff were all very nice, polite and attentive. All these positive aspects could have given us a great vacation. But unfortunately not everything was great. There were significant drawbacks due to the club vacation feeling with wristbands. The hundred beach loungers lined up in a row also contributed to this mass tourism feeling. This was a typical vacation hotel with loud, annoying entertainment and party music or German pop songs with the same titles every day. While in the 5-star hotels in other vacation countries you only meet an upscale clientele, at the Steigenberger Coraya Beach Resort you also saw people, some of whom were tattooed from top to bottom, who got 'drunk' all day at the pool bar and even smoked at the pool bar in the pool!! This was the clientele who even according to their own statements spent most of their vacation at the resort and did without sightseeing or other activities. We also met many long-term vacationers pensioners and 'repeat offenders' who had already been there 20 times. You just have to know what you're getting into if you want to go on vacation in low-cost countries like Egypt or Turkey. And it was definitely worth it with the wonderful, intact reefs. During our little spy visit, the Alaya seemed more sophisticated and upmarket, i. The pool area there was unique and huge, and there were even swim-up rooms with direct pool access. Unfortunately, the beach section was not so nice because it was on the open sea side, where the red flag was raised every day. There was another marked stretch of Alaya beach in the sheltered Coraya Bay, but the distance was just too far.
