We arrived and were giving a presentation from Mario Andreazza, current plant manager, who outlined the basic operations of the factory. His presentation included the overall mission and goals of the company not only from a business side but from a sustainability standpoint as well. After the presentation we were given a complete tour of the factory. I was impressed with the level of attention to detail needed in order to ensure the company operated with minimal mistakes. Recofarma is one of the 21 Coca-Cola concentrate plants in the world. Located in the industrial zone of Manaus, this company continues to deliver their products while focusing on sustainable practices. Our visit started with a presentation by the current plant manager. His presentation highlighted all of the things the company was doing. From supplying concentrate to educating women and children, Recofarma had all of the important bases covered. After the presentation, we were given a full tour of the plant. Everyone in the group was left speechless after seeing all of the state of the art technology used alongside total quality management. It was pretty easy to see why Recofarma was voted as the 10 th best place to work in Brazil! The field visit to Recofarma was more than just an ordinary sit down business meeting to discuss future plans, policies and investments. The visit today was more of a conscious awareness raising! The tour lasted for about an hour after having a 45 minute meeting or so. I mentioned the tour of the factory was an awareness event for me because I had witnessed the amount of effort and product and processes of creating soda concentrate. Though it was really interesting and I am thankful for the tour because I understand this is not an opportunity given to anyone, I was also disgusted in the fact that there is such an effort and investment in soda flavors. I just kept asking myself, WHY? But why? The visit to Recofarma, one of the five concentrate producers for Coca-Cola in Latin America was very entertaining and educational. I thought it was very innovative of Recofarma and Coca-Cola to address and recognize the importance of the women population of Brazil and give them the tools to become small business owners. Recofarma: Visiting RecoFarma was also very interesting; seeing another step in the Coca-Cola production process was pretty neat. It is mind blowing to think about how much work goes into making one soft drink. Also, I really liked how they are committed to their workers and to their community. Their goals to increase and promote recycling, to empower women and youth in the workforce, and to be an overall sustainable company are commendable. I never really thought about how prominent of a company Coca-Cola is until Prof. Duran said it, but visiting Grupo Simoes and Recofarma definitely reinforced that idea. During the presentation, I was mostly impressed with their initiative to promote recycling to the people of Brazil. Their idea was to provide education for all levels of society. What made their strategy more compelling was having women as the target for this campaign. This fit a strategy for Brazil because the woman makes the decisions of the house in terms of purchasing and disposal of goods for consumptions. This resonated a lot with my previous class in International Marketing because we focused on strategies to target a market in an innovative way and really focusing on the best way to get a message to an audience. SUFRAMA proposed an initiative that brings together a majority of concepts learned in that class, but instead of the rising middle class, it was the people of Brazil. It was great to have that class solidified all in that one visit and just made everything click in an instant. Getting a tour of the general manager of one of the few Coca-Cola concentration producers was nothing short of phenomenal. We had access to the most sensitive areas of the plant, including the lab where they mix the concentrate and test it for quality. Nothing was off-limits to us, which was the best experience I have ever had on an educational field trip. This so far is my favorite visit because we not got to learn about the management and business side of the company, but we were also able to tour the factory and see how everything is made. One really interesting thing I learned was that the Recofarma was working to help women and youth become more educated and get more jobs. Through this program other countries in Latin America followed this example and also started more programs for education. The tour of the factory was absolutely amazing. We started off with seeing all the ingredients that go into Coca-Cola products and then went down onto the floor and saw the packing and mixing processes. This was a great experience and I am really starting to understand how business and environment are one in the same. Recofarma has 21 plants in five countries in Latin America. The speakers were eager to share the background of their company and took us on a tour to see how the bottles and beverages are prepared for the consumer. Instead of happy polar bear workers, they used huge machines in incredibly large storage containers. The concentrate comes in a large container that makes a huge amount of the finished product. This place is one of the few that has the privilege of knowing the secret formula of Coca-Cola. Unfortunately, they did not disclose this information.
