I would never got to Thailand's islands and especially Ko Tao after the terrible vicious murders of the two backpackers. It seems there are a fair few rapes of foreign girls and unsolved murders of foreigners. Ko Tao is from all accounts run by 3 very nasty violent mafia families. People think they are safe but they are not. Be careful in these places or my advice do not go at all. The murders in Thailand were so sad and it's horrible to hear about but I wouldn't let it stop anyone travelling to Thailand's islands. Hundreds of thousands of backpackers travel there every year and the vast majority of them come to no harm. I know it doesn't make it OK, but people are harmed in London on a daily basis but it's so common it doesn't make the news. Bad things happen all over the world but we can't let it stop us from experiencing places or we'd never leave home. I agree that in Thailand you do need to be careful. Many backpackers get too drunk or take drugs and put themselves in a vulnerable situation. This really opened up my eyes because i went to Thailand a few years ago with some friends. Like me on Facebook- Acacia Eden. The Thai government announced last week that it will be cracking down on drug use and targeting backpacker areas such as Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. Drugs such as ecstasy and cannabis can be found in abundance at the infamous Full Moon Parties but the Thai police have warned there will be harsh punishments for anyone caught with drugs. We spoke to one backpacker who has seen these punishments first hand. Aged 18, Daniel decided to go travelling for a year with four mates before starting university. Beginning in Thailand, they planned to snake their way through south east Asia andIndonesia before ending up in Australia and New Zealand. The boys were made to line up while they were searched and Daniel tried to subtlety drop his three pills on the floor. The Liverpudlian was taken to one side where he had to sign a form written in Thai while another traveller, an Austrian called Gunther, was forced to strip. Both Daniel and Gunther were handcuffed and put in the back of a police car and were told they had to go to the station. I was still pretty high and thought it was just a formality. At the police station, there were more forms to sign, belongings were taken and then Daniel was thrown in a cell with around 20 other Thai guys. At the time Thailand was cracking down big time on drug dealers and users. Backed by the US, the government was waging war on anyone involved in the trade and thousands had died as a result. It kept going round and round my head. I looked so young, guess they must have felt sorry for me. The next morning Daniel and Gunther were driven to their beach bungalows where they found their passports and were put on a boat to Koh Samui. When we arrived some guys started to ask if we needed a taxi. As soon as they clocked the handcuffs they roared with laughter. The boys were taken to the court house but it was closed until Monday. This was three more nights in jail at least. It was surreal. The next three days passed in a haze of cigarette smoke, sleep and watching the guards read gun magazines from behind their desks. On the Monday morning Daniel was taken to court but learned his case had been postponed for a month. They ended up staying with a family, helping run their guest house in return for food and accommodation and even took the kids to school. This continued to happen for the next six months. His passport was confiscated and was told to remain in the country. He went straight to the British Embassy but after 11 days he got it back and was finally able to leave. Living on Koh Tao

Koh Tao is a small and delicate island. Use this handy guide to get you started. Plastic is a huge problem worldwide and it is destroying our oceans. Koh Tao is completely centred around eco tourism and diving so we are very conscious here about trying to reduce our plastic consumption and litter. So when visiting our beautiful paradise please consider this. In Thailand if you buy anything in a shop, no matter how small, they will give you a plastic bag. If you have a bag on your back or pockets on your shorts, the plastic bag is unnecessary! Please refuse the bag! Plastic straws always end up in the sea and cause huge damage to marine life. Animals like turtles swallow them and die. Please take a moment to think and help save our beautiful marine creatures! If you do have litter on you, please dispose of it properly and do not leave it on the beach! Smoking has recently become illegal on Thai beaches and could land you in a Thai prison cell! Trust me, this will ruin your holiday! No matter where you are smoking, please do not just throw your butts on the ground. They will eventually end up in the sea and be consumed by marine creatures! Ash trays and bins are everywhere on Koh Tao, please use them! Marijuana is now legal in Thailand. There are some evolving restrictions, however its very easy to buy on Koh Tao as there are dispensaries in Mae Haad and Sairee, along with growers scattered around the island. The same rules apply for smoking cigarettes and please be mindful of the smell with other people. There are many many dogs on Koh Tao and we love them all! As a tourist on Koh Tao, you may meet a lovely dog that you want to play with and feed and bring them back to your hostel with you. The dogs that live here are all cared for by the locals, they have homes, they get fed, they get bought to the vet and we love them. However, if you feed them they will follow you wherever you go. Please remember that that dog probably has an owner that is worried about it when it goes missing. Most restaurants and cafes here have a resident dog or two that you may be tempted to fed scraps to, most dog owners do not appreciate this. The dogs will understand! Come to Koh Tao, party and have a great time but please remember to respect the culture that you are in. Throwing around glass bottles and being rude to the people around you is not cool anywhere, no matter how drunk you are! Also, we all like to get naked sometimes but please remember that public nudity is very offensive to Thai culture. Respect the country, respect the people and respect the culture. Preserve Paradise! Plastic Plastic is a huge problem worldwide and it is destroying our oceans. Smoking Smoking has recently become illegal on Thai beaches and could land you in a Thai prison cell!
