Don't get too impressed, I was a ticket clerk, an usher, a stage doorman, etc. But the show they did is NOT what I had in mind. Between the two, to me, the show is the disappointment. There is a lot to like in it, but only a handful of slight incidental details from the book Like the idea of using social media as interstitial material between scenes of a show was in the book as using newspapers headlines for the same purpose. They basically just bought the name. The book is geographically accurate to the places it's set in - both inside and out. It mentions real theatres and sets the actions according to their actual layout and relation to each other. The show takes great liberties with that. The book has some interesting and great characters that are based on real people in real situations the author encountered in his real experiences with at least one Broadway show. Not everything is a direct parallel, but there are certainly enough interesting characters and situations to tell a good story. The book is great if judged on its own merits and not in comparison to a nice show it has very little in common with. Read this book if you like the premise: behind the scenes of a Broadway show circa We didn't have the internet or home video or computer based stage mechanics, but the human relations and creative process hasn't changed all that much. It would indeed make a great movie or miniseries, but the one that we saw on NBC used only it's name and some minor details. I'd have liked the show to continue, but it has almost nothing to do with this book. Don't expect anything from the recent show and enjoy it as a separate story. Having read it many times, I still find it hard to put it down. Really fun read, especially when you map the characters to who they were referencing in the making of Funny Girl. The TV show 'Smash' is apparently based on this book and while they both deal with putting a show up on Broadway and are both pretty soapy in terms of storytelling devices, the similarities end there. In the book, almost the entire production staff is male, the Star is there from the beginning and is a Broadway star think Patti Lupone or Bernadette Peters , and the drug of choice is cocaine. She apparently got her start playing the piano in the lobby of a high class Chicago brothel between 'dates'. Kanin writes the story from the point of view of the new Production Secretary, a young woman, and I have to say, the sex scenes and the passages of yearning for the object of her desire are a bit clunky. Still, it's an interesting page turner but not one of Mr. Kanin's best. Great seller! Fast delivery! This book does not represent Smash the made for T. The book is so boring it could not be finished. It went immediately to the thrift store. Seeing this book mentioned as the basis for the tv series I decided to read it and I found it very interesting. It's amazing that some shows actually make it to Broadway. This was a fun read. I don't think that the author Garson Kanin was writing anything for the tv show of the same name. He was writing about the musical 'Funny Girl' with Barbara Streisand. Behind the scenes,so to speak,she had Kanin fired and replaced by Jerome Robbins. So Kanin wrote a scathing book to get back at her. This was documented in a book titled'The Great Parade' by Peter Filichia on page of the book published in Did he win? Not if you look at her career. I am a big fan of hers,but she never did another broadway show. I believe it was her choice, but who knows the dynamics of it all? So the writers of the tv 'Smash' may have used it as a template but Kanin did not write for the show. That is why it may not seem much like the book,as many reviews have indicated. So 'Smash' tv has only an idea in common with book but not the details. I enjoyed the book very much. The backstage side of theater was well done, and the barbs were nicely pointed. I don't consider myself a prude, but Ifound the sex scenes a bit excessive. Still, probably one of the worst ending of a book I have ever read. I think they left off the final chapter.
