My Obersalzbuerg Mystery-Can You Help?

As you may have started to realise I've recently spent some time in the Berchtesgaden area and I stumbled on this forgotten building during one of quite a few walks in the woods looking for what little is left of Obersalzburg. I have to date been unable to accurately identify what this building is. The only ref I have found is a recce aerial photograph after Squadron paid the place a visit in May and the intel markings suggests its a 'Coal Bunker' which it doesn't look like to me plus I couldn't see any way of filling it with coal. Cheers for any help. Drew , Sep 19, Poked around on Google earth and came up with this view from the top: It looks like coal was dumped in from this point and would be taken out via the large doors on the side in your picture. The reason for the enormity of the building is to prevent explosion of the coal dust. The larger the space the less chance of the proper proportions of Air and Fuel mixing. Formerjughead , Sep 19, Drew likes this. Cheers for that. I will have a look on Google Earth to check its the same place. I walked around the top area and didn't see that. It was barbed wired off but the area was all grass and trees from what I could see. Dollop of rep and Mystery solved thanks to Mr Jug. Not a problem Heating and domestic hot water for the military complex on the Obsalzberg was derived from coke not coal. Can you imagine the products of combustion from the small industrial boilers firing coal at a rate necessary for this site being allowed to waft across the mountain and indicate a curious installation on the Obersalzberg?. Firing 'Koks' produces zero hydrocarbon emissions,ie carbon dioxide only which would be highly unlikely to be picked up by aerial reconnaissance, whereas firing coal would give a telltale by emissions which would be in excess of domestic coal burning. Further unless coal lorries are canvas covered there is always a telltale of coal deliveries on the supply roads. The Koksbunker, not Kohlebunker as it is referred to,was situated on the left hand side of the road that ran left to right at the junction of the climb to the Kehlsteinhaus and is now recognised by the farm type steel gate which shuts off the Kehlstein road from the Obsalzberg level. The Koksbunker had a capacity of metric tons and its capacity would be designed for 6 months duration so that the bunker levels would safely supply heavy usage in the winter months from Ocober to April. So the coalbunker referred to and photographed, is actually the cokebunker. Harry Ree , Sep 19, Harry, A great explanation. I have been looking through a book I have but so far not found this coke building. An interesting thread Andy. Regards Tom. Smudger Jnr , Sep 19, Obersalzberg by Ernst Hanisch contains a map of the Obersalzberg On it as I previously mentioned is the koksbunker which is shown as item No 25 on the map attached. Also on the map is another fuel store, not designated and listed as item Nearby to this second fuel store is a Hochbehalter which translates as far as I can see translates as a 'high container' which could be a water tower, although 'wasser' in not used in its designation. On the other hand it could be an auxiliary fuel bunker Then comes a little confusion in that the table of damage sustained to the list of buildings on the Obersalzberg after the raid of 25 April ,in English, shows items No 24 and No 25 as coal bunkers. Could be a problem in translating the German to the English and not being aware of the English noun,'coke' section of damage table attached.
