We pack up silently in the dark, moving with purpose. Harv has a need for speed today. Where does all this energy come from? On the other side we make our way down to Arinsal ski resort. When we get to the bottom of the pass, we huddle in the shade of a big rock for a five-minute break. Looking down toward Arinsal from Port de Rat, our morning pass. Our SIM cards cover us in Andorra, but many European plans rack up expensive charges in the tiny landlocked nation. We all hike out together, debating whether the bar-restaurant at the ski resort will be open this time of year. The Coma or The Rubber. When we arrive, Lukas and Nathalie are already sipping Cokes out of little plastic cups on the veranda. When they get up to leave, we hug goodbye for real this time. This is where we part ways for good. Eight days. A little bolt of panic lances my chest. As an aside, can we talk for just a minute about the sheer quality of the friendships one makes during a thru-hike? Lukas and Nathalie are a perfect example. Despite only knowing us for a few days on-trail, they will become a critical support for me and Harv as we reel from Major Life Changes in the aftermath of the HRP. Thank you, Lukas and Nathalie; you two are true friends. We love you both! We assume this is where we catch the bus to town, but we are wrong, so very wrong. Rather than backtrack to the trail, we decide to just road walk the 3km down to the actual bus stop. We leave Arne with vague plans to bump into each other in town. The pavement takes us through a long tunnel painted in Tour de France yellow. Apparently there were mountain stages here in , , and Eventually, a small car picks us up, and we learn from the man driving it that Spain won the World Cup while we were summiting Tuc de Marimanya the other day. Harv proceeds to wow him with his detailed knowledge of famous Spanish footballers and cyclists of the 20th and 21st centuries. La Massana is not at all what I envisioned. Most of the towns on the HRP are quiet off-season ski resorts or small mountain villages. La Massana, in contrast, is a literal bustling metropolis. My head is spinning. We book a cheap hotel room and purchase ingredients for dinner from the grocery store. I even eat a little bit of meat. After so many days of couscous, the sudden influx of nutrition amps me up. Where are all the people? This place is depressing. My mind wanders up to the trail. As hikes go, the HRP is almost perfect, but its fatal flaw is that it is too fucking short. I have certain decisions to make in the coming weeks and months, and I feel inadequate to the task. I wish the HRP would never end, that it would just go on and on so I could continue hiking and avoiding my problems indefinitely. Ironically, my most immediate problem is that I am cold and tired and I want to go inside, and there is no avoiding that one. I go back to the hotel and slip quietly into bed without waking Harv. I feel lonely and the kind of tired that has nothing to do with sleep. It has to be enough. It is quite narrow, zig zaggy and icy as its shaded most of the day. We had a person studio for 2 of us and we had a choice of rooms to sleep in. For us it was massive, but if there were 4 of you it would be a squeeze. We had 4 rooms as a group, the other rooms were pretty much identical with 3 people sharing and they were more then happy with them. In the middle you get a fridge and a sink as well as a big bathroom. The food in the hotel was ok if you liked chips! The last night we had a choice of potatoes which was exciting by that point but quickly dissapointed when the mash was infact smash powdered potatoe yuck! The soup, hmmm some nights it was ok but most nights it looked like discoloured water with a greasy film on top and tasted pretty horrible. The hotel probably has the cheapest bar in the resort!! You could by a bottle in the shops for 6 euros and drink that in the hotel lounge. The town itself is quite a walk away, We managed 2 nights out, bar crawl night and 70's night. Obviously by the time you need to walk back up the hill you are so drunk you don't even notice lol!! Arinsal side is quite small, I kept getting told of by the lift operator on the 4 man lift at the top on the 1st day as for some reason I kept falling over miserable git on the saturday it was really busy and they decided to shut half the mountain off for an empty slalom run!! A few times I put my arms across my face as Im sure I was about to get hit!! Pal is slightly bigger and we spent a few days over there although as snowboarders we struggled to get right over the other side as the blue run linking all the slopes together was a tad flat so we would give up and drop of the side. On the Tuesday it was dead we pretty much had the whole mountain to ourselfs it was great. We didn't even have to fight for the bus home at 4. On the Thursday what a diffrent story we got the 8. Again the slopes were quiet as it was a big place. When we got back down to bus stop for 4. The bus ended up leaving people there!! It was carnege getting on the bus, my OH put out boards on whilst I found a seat. There was no order at all cause we were last off the bus we wanted all our stuff at the bottom its our own gear and didn't want it dinged up by rental skis, sticks and boots! Why skiers couldn't take there boots and sticks on the bus with em was beyond me. So after that we gave it a miss for friday and saturday. As much as I enjoyed it, Soldeu is still the best resort in Andorra. She speaks very good english but I'm a little concerned that some of it got lost in translation. Appreciate if someone could advise. There's not a lot to see facing the bottom of the slope to be fair mate I shouldn't worry about it. Smilies Attachments. Submit More Options Cancel.
