But it doesn't matter if I do have to put loo paper in a pedal bin. I just love everything about Greece; an affair which began 25 years ago. Then, the only drinks on the wine list were retsina and Demestica - which inevitably became known as Domestos. Thassos is the most northerly island in the Aegean and you won't find it unless you are specifically looking for it. Over the years the number of British tourists have dwindled. And Thassos isn't the sort of place for the younger generation looking for a searing, mind-blowing musical break in a new Faliraki or Ayia Napa. It's a neat, laid-back little island where mainly middle-aged couples spend gentle evenings over leisurely meals in attractively-priced tavernas listening to 50s and 60s music. The haven of calm generated by its vivid greenness which wraps round you like a soothing duvet. Dense swathes of pine trees line the slopes of the craggy peaks weaving up to Mount Ypsarion, the island's highest point. Modern-day Thassos is built on a rich history going back to the days of the ancients when the islanders accumulated fabulous wealth from the wine trade. The main archaeological sites are in Limenas - otherwise known as Thassos Town. It's described as the island's capital but, charmingly, it's little more than an overgrown village. The archaeological museum, whose doors were closed for years, re-opened in and it now provides a link with the sprawling agora next door. Reminders of the past are constantly being unearthed - some dating from prehistoric times - and Thassos has a huge legacy of treasures from bygone ages and which, in laconic island style, haven't always been fully appreciated. In the main square of Limenas, for example, there's a huge mosaic which, until recently, was used as a pitch for the town kids' football games until the antiquities people decided to sheet it over to prevent further damage. Above the town, on a commanding position over the great bay of Limenas, stands the recently rebuilt amphitheatre where performances of Greek classics are staged on summer evenings. A track leads to the substantial remains of the Acropolis and temples dedicated to Apollo, Athena and Pan. But take my advice: The best time to attempt the climb is in the early morning or late afternoon. However, the views out across the Aegean to the Greek mainland are well worth the exertion. And once you're back at sea level the tavernas and restaurants dotted around the ancient harbour provide one of the prettiest backdrops in Greece. The old harbour Limenas actually has three is also the base for the town's dinky fishing fleet and the town's taverna owners gather on the quayside as the boats return, bidding for the best white fish, tsipura , sardines and mullet. There are beaches at either end of Thassos Town but smart sun-seekers inevitably head off by water taxi for the appropriately named resort of Golden Beach, Makryamos and Skala Potamia. In high season there's a cheap and regular bus service out of Limenas linking all the favourite tourist resorts. The Greek mainland around the ferry port of Keramoti and the regional capital of Kavala have their own attractions for a wider range of visitors and a hydrofoil service links Kavala with Thassos.
