This 'slice of life' novel is obviously military genre and is definitely memoir-ish. The story is steeped in facts because the author is the lieutenant intelligence officer who journeyed to the Korean DMZ — and paid the price with a severe and lasting physical wound and a psychological scar that, to this day, haunts him from time to time. This is not going to be the next great American novel and it won't win any awards. However, it is an interesting story, like the ones told around the kitchen table or over drinks. Some of the same type of incidents occurred while I was there. I was on Patrol that day so I missed him, we were looking for a suspected sniper that turned out to be a farmer. We had to burn our waste fecal material so that was fun. His description of Toko -Ri was just about right I am sure it has changed after 30 years but it was like a wild west town then. I have read many books on the DMZ and this is one of the best it tells of a time when the cold was hot and American soldiers were wounded and killed and very few knew of it unless you were there. Most of what I knew about duty on the DMZ back then was based on rumor. His sense of humor, in spite of dealing with several serious and at times life threatening events, comes through in the narrative. Anyone who served in the military, especially in Korea will appreciate his understated delivery of day to day events as well as the more bizarre things he experienced. I found myself laughing often as I read through the story remembering similar situations I found myself in that could happen only in Korea. I was also surprised at how aggressive the North Koreans were in their effort to instigate violence on the DMZ.
