His ability to capture the essence of life in Peru from a gringo perspective is unique and thought provoking. But then what would you expect from a former paddleball national champ, racquetball legend, Professor of Hoboism, and CEO of Executive Tours taking other CEO's on adventures they never considered. Bo is as unique as the stories he tells, intelligent, athletic, artistic, creative, free thinker, all the elements you look for in an author looking to tell a story. A smattering of stories, some interesting, some not so much. Some stories here are literally just a couple of paragraphs long. Hard to stay engaged with the book as there seemed to have been a focus on quantity rather than quality. Very interesting stories from the largest city in the world without a road in or out. I would have liked to have learned more about the trade in cocaine and gold which are the two largest exports from this city. Also the birth ratio heavily favoring girls over boys is something I've never heard of but is mentioned a couple times here. With all the attractive young females around is there an entertainment industry in Iquitos other than prostitution? What would draw a main stream tourist to the Amazon who is not interested in roughing it in the jungle with all the heat and biting insects? The prose is meant to be quirky I assume but clearer writing and editing would be helpful. Except for the wild faces and angry paint of the Cat People, whose village he wanders into and who of course want to kill him. He escapes—barely—in one episode in a lifetime of terrifying yet educational confrontation, a succession of colorful episodes of suspense, discovery, and anthropological delight. Where Wade Davis and Tracy Johnston left off, Bo Keeley picks up, bringing the mysteries of the jungle alive through head on engagement. No distance too far, no tribe too extreme, no disease unsampled. For adventurer Bo Keeley, it has to be first person. Nothing else counts. And for the reader of these Amazon stories, a flood of literary relief that someone is out there doing it for us. One person found this helpful. The result is that you get caught Bo Keeley needs a copy editor. I've only read a few chapters of what I was hoping would be an enlightening book, but instead of being left with excitement over my own upcoming trip to Peru, I was left with a headache. My apprehension began upon reading the introduction from the author. Plagued by typos and abhorrent punctuation that left me wondering what Bo was trying to convey, the intro ends with a salutation from the author dated 1 January, - a date nearly 4 months from now. Believability in Bo's stories is already compromised. I wish I could say that things improved from there but truly, reading each paragraph has been a painful experience. The result is that you get caught up in trying to decipher the meaning of each sentence and completely lose what the author is trying to say. I'm very, very disappointed. Bo Keeley is not only a prolific writer but a famous writer who has shared with me these stories and journeys as they unfold. Each story is done with a beautiful voice, a sense of passion and are to be treasured. Keeley is a writer's writer--an innovator that other authors look up to for inspiration, for passion and for his ability to connect to the reader. I hope you enjoy his journey--it is mesmerizing. And Stay Alive. The best book on Iquitos, Peru and the surrounding Amazon headwaters. The author visits every conceivable off-beat place in the magical port of Iquitos, and then hikes a hundred trails from village to village and hoboes the Rio Amazon and its tributaries in banana boats and family canoes. Adventure after adventure, charmingly and professionaly written. The photos are magazine quality. All thumbs up for Stories from Iquitos. Armchair travelers are fortunate to have a bold, articulate writer like Steven Bo Keeley, willing to brave the bugs, thugs, diseases, waters and weather in the Amazon wilderness of Peru to bring us with intricate precision and gory detail these real-life adventures. The book is colorfully illustrated with the author's own photographs and works of artists inspired by the locale. See more reviews. Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations.
