Some of these substances appear to have become well-established in some countries, cities or specific populations, although overall their relative prevalence may remain low in comparison to some other better-known drug classes. However, for a variety of methodological and historical reasons, our current monitoring approaches often perform poorly in identifying patterns and trends in the use of less well-known substances. This makes it difficult to comment with confidence on the prevalence of use or recent trends, or on the extent to which these drugs are associated with health or social problems. The information available suggests, however, that in some countries, subgroups or settings, the use of these sorts of substances has become more common. As patterns of drug use can change rapidly and many of the drug-related problems we face are increasingly influenced by the co-consumption of multiple substances, there is a strong argument for increasing investment in the surveillance of substances with hallucinogenic, anaesthetic, dissociative or depressant properties. The quantity of ketamine seized and reported to the EU Early Warning System on new psychoactive substances has varied over time, but has remained at relatively high levels in recent years, tripling from just under a tonne in to 2. Seizures were reported by 17 countries in both years, with both Denmark and the Netherlands reporting large seizures, and these two countries together accounted for two thirds of the overall quantity of ketamine seized in Most of the ketamine seized in Europe is thought to originate from India, but there is some evidence that the drug may also be sourced from Pakistan and China. Available information suggests that production of the drug in Europe remains limited. Overall, there is evidence to suggest that ketamine is likely to be consistently available in some national drug markets and may have become an established drug of choice in some settings. It is also reported to be used in combination with other substances, such as stimulants. In Ireland, for example, the intentional mixing of cocaine and ketamine has been identified at music festivals, as have ketamine-related medical incidents during and In , Euro-DEN sentinel hospital emergency departments in Europe reported that cocaine was the substance most often reported in combination with ketamine in acute toxicity presentations. Ketamine is commonly snorted, but can also be injected, and has been linked to various dose-dependent acute and chronic harms, including neurological and cardiovascular toxicity, mental health problems, such as depression, and urological complications, such as bladder damage from intensive use or the presence of adulterants. Ketamine may also be added to other drug mixtures, including MDMA powders and tablets, potentially making inadvertent consumption an issue. In contrast to some other parts of the world, mixtures sold as pink cocaine are less likely to contain the synthetic drug 2C-B, which has historically been associated with this product. For example, those who have developed urological problems may be poorly represented. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has been linked to various health problems, including poisonings, burns and lung injuries and, in some cases of prolonged exposure, neurotoxicity from vitamin B12 deficiency. There is, however, a debate on the extent to which this substance is associated with negative health risks, especially among episodic users, although given its apparent growing popularity among young people, this is clearly an important area for further research and monitoring. In some European cities, discarded nitrous oxide gas canisters have become a relatively common sight, and the disposal of the smaller stainless steel canisters has been identified as a drug-litter issue in some countries. The drug has become more accessible and cheaper, available online and with the increased availability of larger gas canisters aimed at recreational use. However, high-volume cylinders may also increase the risk of lung damage, due to the higher pressure of their contents and, in general, inhaling directly from gas bottles is reported to be associated with a greater risk of harm. Nitrous oxide has various commercial uses, for example, it is used by the catering industry. Regulatory approaches to the sale and use of this substance vary between countries, with the gas legally available for sale in some countries. Non-controlled and new benzodiazepines also continued to be available in some European countries but, again, current monitoring approaches make it difficult to comment on the scale of their use, although signals exist that these substances may have important consequences for health, especially when consumed in combination with other drugs. They are often very cheap and may be used by young people in combination with alcohol, sometimes resulting in potentially serious health reactions or aberrant behaviour. These substances have also been linked to overdose deaths among people who use opioids. A lack of toxicological information means the role that benzodiazepines play in opioid-related deaths is not sufficiently understood. So far, seizures of benzo-dope have been reported by Estonia and Latvia. In both countries, the same mixtures have also been identified in residues analysed from used syringes. Both clinical and public interest has been growing in the therapeutic use of some novel substances, particularly psychedelic substances, but also dissociative drugs such as ketamine. At the same time, a growing number of clinical studies, both internationally and in Europe, are exploring the potential of a range of psychedelic substances to treat different mental health conditions. The evidence base in this area is growing rapidly, and some studies have produced evidence to support the view that some substances may have value in the treatment of specific neuropsychiatric disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder or treatment-resistant depression and major depressive disorder. However, the interpretation of the results is complicated by a range of methodological issues, and generalisation remains difficult as much of the research in this area remains at an early stage. Nonetheless, these developments have received considerable media attention, raising concerns that this may encourage greater experimental use of a range of potent psychoactive substances without appropriate medical support, potentially putting vulnerable individuals at risk of suffering adverse consequences. We walked out of the restaurant after dinner to find a swarm of officers inspecting our parked cars. At this point the Polizei have spent 2 hours wasting our time and checking random documents which probably meant naff all to them anyway. Would they slap us with a fine and let us go or worse? Well around they broke the news that all the cars were going to be impounded. Initial panic spreads across the group followed by a wave of confusion. Lewis lights his 17th fag since arriving at the services. Hold up, are they actually taking the cars? I mean some of the cars with us were practically standard. Why are they being taken? What are we supposed to do? What next? They tell us to get our belongings out the car — sure, whatever will shut you up officer. And then the same for all other 20 people that were with us. It starts to rain more — nice. A camera shutter sounds behind me. Local paparazzi. I kid you not. Nice, probably a tabloid. I mean an actual newspaper has better things to report on. Fucking brilliant, my friends and I are stuck in the middle of a foreign country, in the rain, late at night. I hope they got a good picture of me. It was raining, a lot of us were panicking and clearly shaken, and they were actually laughing amongst themselves. But hey — we deserved it, right? They explained how the cars will be going off to get tested. Can they even legally do a TUV test on them? Realistically the only thing which could have helped us was a lawyer. But funds are a little tight 2 hours after bumping into the Polizei. Have they taken the cars? Are you stuck in Cologne? Sorry all, but at that point I literally had no clue. I asked if we can charge our phones from the cars because at this point the Polizei took all the car keys. One of the more sympathetic officers there hands me the keys and their colleague follows me to the Lupo. I put the key in my passenger door and turn it. I turn it again. The officer starts laughing at me, and I stop. I look at the woman. Ginger hair, a fairly masculine face and skinny legs. Laughing at me for not being able to open the door. SO funny. Perhaps this Dr. Eggman lookin-ass spoke better English than I thought. I hope she did anyway. All of this over some stretched tyres. Lewis came over and took the key from me, and unlocked the car through his door. At least we had some warmth whilst the Lupo idled and charged our phones. This also gave me a chance to see if someone local messaged offering help. Bastien messaged me. For the third time that night. This was like a comedy sketch show, the officers clearly had no clue what they were surrounded by. One of the lads we were with was on standard wheels and aired up his car. He unplugged his controller and hid it from the army of officers. They scratched their heads and went to catch bigger fish in our group. After painfully watching the cars get lifted onto flatbed trailers via straps around the wheels, the clock struck We were finally free, at 3 in the morning. After a number of lifts from Bastien and Andy, we were all in the Hostel for ish. The lovely guy behind the bar was pretty sloshed up as he was drinking with guests earlier that evening. He insisted on joining him, and gave us free drinks. A few of us headed into bed, whilst the rest of us went to the bar. The next morning was gloomy. Information slowly started to arise, and we ended up learning that the cars will not be tested until at least Tuesday. The ambiguity was terrible, and we needed to do something about it. Rental cars. We did some digging about, and after going through a few companies we ended up in Europcar. We were mentally wounded, but we were not out! We set off that night at My close friends were literally all around me, and we made it together. The next few days went by and we did the usual. Consumed loads of Austrian food, drank loads of Austrian beer and just got on with the holiday. I had an absolutely fantastic time. Eventually Wednesday and Thursday came around and the drivers had to go to collect their cars. The fact our story got so much social media attention meant that the drivers managed to organise transport back to the UK for far less than usual. All 10 of the impounded cars failed the TUV tests despite the authorities legally not being able to test them. The German authorities confiscated the V5s and number plates and sent them back to the DVLA along with failure to meet TUV regulations certificates, in turn meaning the cars had to get towed back to the UK on flatbeds. We must have clearly pissed off the officer who decided that was the correct course of action. Either that or someone poured dog piss into their cornflakes for breakfast. The law was bent over backwards by the Police here as it had been since the start of this episode and all drivers were slapped with a euro fine which covered the cost of recovery and TUV testing. For every 20 people offering to help there was of course a person who said we deserved it. Of course, every single person who told us we deserved it must have never broken the speed limit in their life, let alone perhaps answer a text message whilst driving. But who knows, perhaps this is fate looking over us. Life has always had a funny way of figuring things out around me in a weird manner I guess. After a chat with Lewis I decided to stay in Worthersee an extra day and a half and got a lift back to London with my good friends RnO Customs in their work in progress E We raised the front as high as it went without destroying the wheel geo, and peeled off all the stickers. We crack on regardless. We left at sunset and headed for the German border. Driving around Switzerland and through Italy was too uneconomical and time consuming, and we all just wanted to get home, so we headed towards the German border. We could see lights ahead. The closer we get, the more apparent it becomes. Germany have set up a hard border between Austria and Germany to monitor cars entering Germany. Of course, they wave us down and drag the car under light. Once again, I parted my passport over to the Polizei. Then a fella comes out from his Police cave. We pull over to the side and beg them to just let us continue. Olli and Ryan get out their jack regardless and get the car up in the air. At 1 in the morning, I find myself once again being surrounded by German police. Olli manages to get three or four threads out of his coil overs. The car gets dropped back down. Still tucking. The police bloke comes all over and gives us the classic chin scratch as we beg him to let us go. He explains how we have to pay a euro fine for being too low. We cough out the cash and he scratches his chin a bit more. And off we fucking went. We arrived at Calais at in the morning. I say holiday… it was a hectic adventure.
