His name was Ochu. He was 36 years old. A worldly vapor clung about him. People who selling and using the sugar? Tons of heroin were offed and shipped to the mainland via small batches divvied among several motorized dhows. Crews were paid with heroin. Eventually the drug would find its way deeply into Africa, Europe, North America. The United Nations has estimated that, annually, more than 75 tons of Afghan heroin are smuggled from Africa to Europe. Unguja a. Zanzibar supports many thousands of heroin addicts. The island hosts 22 drug treatment centers and a bustling methadone clinic. Naturally HIV is a problem. Golden late-day panoramas yawn further as Ochu and I blur past deforested plains, idle folk in small huts, plots of maize, cassava, papaya, banana. The route east from Stone Town was a wide gray slab plying the dusty cluttered island sprawl, its thick pale air rich with diesel and woody decay that dissolved past Fuoni, becalmed and cloistered by a long cool wet tunnel of enormous old mango trees, low orange sunlight dripping through them and warming myriad boughs of dense green. Although this inspired jealousy in some siblings, she was renowned for her sweet temper and fairness to both family and servants. Already the crickets trilled loudly. Upon rickety rusty bikes and pedaling home from mosques, men wore white thobes and kufi caps as they wheeled past the butterfly farm, the clove and coconut plantations of Bungi, the east flank of Kiwani Bay and its mysteriously sumptuous islets—wholly a likely surf zone if Unguja sat a thousand miles east. The air swelled with salt. Ochu was a Paje native and knew well the draws of his vast home beach. With its turquoise lagoon, bleached sands, and beachfront bars, for Europeans and South Africans, Paje was an authentic kiteboard utopia. The forecast looked bleak. This was normal. Like most of East Africa, Unguja lived on the wrong side of swells, copping constant chop from reliable southeast trades but graced by none of the robust Southern Ocean energy that fanned across the central and eastern Indian Ocean. With rare exceptions, groundswell ribbed the opposite way. Soft sectiony waves combed flat shallow coral reefs a mile from shore. Here was the nature trail through verdurous monkey-filled Jozani Forest and its butterflies and mangrove swampiness which we threaded near the villages of Pete and Kitogani—colorful laundry flapped from lines strung between homes, kids in Muslim dress stepped home from school. This route skimmed fallow fields straight to Paje which, compared with Stone Town, appeared exhausted, overlooked, windier, dustier, poorer. But its beaches had been fingered heavily by tourism, yes, mostly couples and kiteboarders from—yes—Europe and South Africa. Pavement ended and the road splattered into acnes of craters and ruts and rocks, piles of coconut husks, beds of garbage pecked by loud roosters, brutal potholes filled with coral rubble. Narrow alleys twixt small rusty red-roofed concrete homes and cracked coral rag bungalows, hazy and pastel in the dying daylight, all beiges and yellows with green cocopalm fronds for contrast. Few homes had fences, most of them faded thatch or vertical sticks or bald half-buried tires. Several homes looked new or newly plastered and were painted brown. The village was spartan with open space aplenty for the random hungry grazing cow and huddled drunken groups of men in kufi caps playing bao , a mancala board game, under a threadbare red tent. Small children in rags sat on dirt, into it sketching with small brown fingertips. There were tall spindly coconut trees with no understory vegetation—only hard-packed white coral sand and the holy important road. But there was sugar, yes—hot, and lots of it. I smiled and injected my weary toes. This sugar was called sand. Jan Michael Kew. By Michael H. Kew Military checkpoints —why? A side-glance toward me. You get the zing? There was no surf.

I could have gotten sucked into Zanzibar. It has my happy color blue Indian Ocean, friendly people, lively vibe and lots of activity. I only stayed about 2 weeks there as I was silly enough to book an onward flight. I found the three cheapest accommodations, all of which were excellent. Zanzibar can be as fancy or as cheap as you like it. There are 5-star resorts lining the aqua water and the beach is raked twice a day or you can stay across the street lured with cheap prices and bicycle rentals. Stone Town offered an inexpensive, clean, amenity stocked hostel in the center of the city walking distance to cafes, night markets and small alleys to explore. Next stop, Jambiani just south of Paje. The local bus from Stone Town was a noteworthy experience. I traveled with an Aussie father and son that I had met in Dar Es Salaam and took the ferry with and would later meet again for a boat ride and some snorkel. But back to the bus, when you think the tiny bus has reached its capacity add 12 more people, their luggage and bundles, several chickens and construction materials to build a hut. To this day I have never traveled in such a confined box that felt more like a coffin for over 4 hours. I wear loose trousers on travel days for cultural respect and to avoid sticking to the narrow vinyl benches. On this humid day in October the insides of my knees bruised from the unceasing pressure between each other. And once the rain came the driver and conductor shaded us with a thin blue tarp, rescuing us from the wetness, but suffocating us with the humid air of each others bodies. Jambiani is one of the last destinations on that route, so by the time I was ready to jump out I could almost straighten one leg. My friend Raven, that I had met on safari, was on holiday and opted for an Instagram worthy beach bungalow run by a lovely Turkish couple. They had no problem with me spending my days there indulging in the loungers as the two of us racked up a sizable daily bar tab. The tides on the east coast would radically transform the coast twice a day. Low tide, the water was nearly 2 km away and you would cross long white beaches with small pools. High tide brought the waters thundering against the high rock walls and obscuring the bleached sand. So when the moon cycle hit its fullest, the sky was ignited with a grand golden moon. Raven and I sat on her sandy porch having a beer admiring the rise of this magnificent celestial body and I returned to my comfy room across the street. Nungwi, in the North, was the most special of these places. I stayed in a dorm with decent water pressure and twice made out with a cute Danish guy that was also a guest. One of the hostel employees brought me to a small tuck shop where I could get my chips mayai fix or heroin if I was so inclined and the owner would get smashed off his face and polish his shotgun in the middle of the night.
