A former Mandurah drug dealer says he is on the path to recovery after 26 years of 'hell', which involved multiple suicide attempts, relationship breakdowns and psychotic episodes, stemming from his methamphetamine addiction. Login or signup to continue reading. The Mandurah Mail is producing a four-week series looking into the devastating affect meth has on individuals and the impacts it has on our community. Craig, 34, began using drugs at eight years old after being introduced to marijuana by a high school boy, who he said sexually abused him. The traumatic incident and the bullying Craig experienced in school, prompted him to 'numb the pain', with drugs and binge drinking. I had buck teeth, glasses and crossed eyes. I just wanted to die, I was angry at them all for saving me. Craig tried meth at 14 years old. He became heavily dependent on alcohol at age 18, when he began working as an offshore rigger. The father-of-three said he quickly rose to the top of the ranks. It scared me that they could have pulled the trigger and my son was in the house on his own, and wouldn't know what to do with his dad on the floor. So as not to feel depressed, Craig would go days and even sometimes weeks without sleeping. Craig experienced drug-induced psychosis, which involved hearing voices whispering. Craig said his 'undoing' was when an acquaintance stole three kilograms of his meth. On November 21, , in the depths of despair and struggling to get clean, Craig hung himself on his back patio. Craig said he spent eight days in Fiona Stanley Hospital for swelling to the brain and brain damage. Craig fell deeper into depression and meth dependence, which eventually resulted in a loss of cognitive ability. I couldn't walk in a straight line, I couldn't stand up straight - I had to hold onto something. Craig said his partner ended the relationship because she could not see him 'slowly kill' himself. Craig said a rehab stint at Serenity Lodge in Rockingham got him on the straight and narrow and Narcotics Anonymous in Mandurah had kept him clean. To this day, I still love the affect it gives you. The things you're hiding from that you don't want to deal with just build up. So you use. The problem is with our mental health. But, Craig said he would make sure he does not go down that path again. Generally, people who inject drugs dispose of their used injecting equipment safely and appropriately. In Western Australia, people who inject drugs can safely dispose of used needles and syringes by:. Used needles and syringes are occasionally found in parks and other public places, and this can be a concern for people in the community who find them. If you find a discarded needle and syringe in the community, and none of the options above are possible, used needles and syringes may be disposed of in the domestic waste in a rigid-walled, puncture resistant plastic container with a screw-top lid. The risk of catching HIV or other infections from an injury caused by a discarded needle is very low. However, it is important to follow certain steps when disposing of a needle and syringe:. Tell children never to pick up a needle, but to let an adult know if they find one. If you are representing a company or service that requires disposal of large quantities of needles and syringes, arranging for a waste disposal company to assist with collection and disposal would be recommended. Do not dispose of loose needles and syringes directly into green waste collection bins, recycling bins, drains or toilets, or post boxes. Safe disposal of needles and syringes for people who inject drugs Generally, people who inject drugs dispose of their used injecting equipment safely and appropriately. However, it is important to follow certain steps when disposing of a needle and syringe: Do not be alarmed. Get a rigid-walled, puncture resistant, plastic container with a well-secured lid, preferably screw top. Avoid using glass which can shatter, aluminium that can be squashed or frosted plastic that may not be puncture-proof. Bring the container to the needle and syringe, and place on the ground next to the needle and syringe. Do not hold the container as you are putting the syringe in it. Pick up the used needle and syringe by the blunt end, away from the point. Do not touch the sharp point. Do not try to put the plastic protective cap back on a needle if it has been removed. Put the needle and syringe, point first into the container. More than one needle and syringe can be placed in the container, but do not overfill. Do not carry the needle and syringe unless it is in a suitable container. Make sure the container is tightly sealed. Put the sealed container in a domestic rubbish bin. Do not put needles and syringes down toilets, in recycling bins or post boxes. If you accidently prick yourself with the needle, find out how to treat discarded needle and syringe injuries.
