Short and fairly easy stage between the two biggest cities in the Liguria region, along the very scenic coastline of Liguria. The stage has some small and easy 'lumps' which are not categorized climbs, but only one main difficulty, Passo del Bracco about halfway on the stage. From there they descend towards the stage finish in La Spezia but do an extra loop around the city to add some more kms to the stage. The easy last part of the stage should probably make this a mass sprint. Stage La Spezia - Abetone, km Based on the direction the race were going, one could probably guess that this was coming. A monster stage in the Tucany Apennines including what could described as Mortirolo's little brother. The stage starts at the Ligurian coast, in La Spezia, and then heads northeast into the Apennines. The first climb to Passo del Lagastrello starts after about 35 km, and from there it's more or less hilly and mountainous terrain the whole stage. Lagastrello is a first category climb and i s just a first test on the stage, followed by a couple of second and another first category climbs the next k. But so far, although a moderately tough medium mountain stage, it has been just a warm-up for the finale. After km they pass through the small village of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, then turn north and start the monster climb to San Pellegrino in Alpe. Probably one of the two toughest climbs in the Apennines, along with Blockhaus, it has been used in the Giro only one time? This should be a good place to attack before the 15 km long descent and the last climb to Abetone. It's almost strange that a so good combination of a real brutal penultimate climb and a easier last climb hasn't been used more often in the Giro. This is a perfect stage for long range attacks, kms from the stage finish, and the possibility to earn signifcant time gaps. Stage Pistoia - Montalcino, km So, time for the last decisive stage, a sterrato stage probably tougher than anything we've seen before. But since I already had version of the Giro without the Dolomites, I wanted to modify that to include this finish with a San Pellegrino Alpe-Abetone combo and a sterrato stage. This stage is pretty much a combo of some of the sections used in Strade Bianche, just ridden in the opposite direction, and about the same finish as the Giro stage to Montalcino. The first half of the stage is quite easy, and the gravel sectors starts with exactly k to go. The first sector to Colle Pinzuto is quite easy, mostly downhill, and is much more important when ridden in the opposite direction with less than 20k to left of Strade Bianche. But there is much more to come. The two first Monte Sante Marie and San Martino in Grania is a bit more downhill than uphill and a bit easier than when ridden the other way in Strade Bianche. The archtypical climber with less endurance could really lose minutes here, especially in bad weather with rain and muddy roads. If the GC changed the day before on the extremely steep slopes of San Pellegrino in Alpe, it could change again here. Cadel Evans won here in , and a stage like this would probably favour those GC contenders who also have the engine to contend in the long classics. More of a Fuglsang stage than Simon Yates A typical easy last stage of a GT, doing four and a half loops in the central part of Roma before ending, probably with a mass sprint, just next to Forum Romanum. It's a pretty tough version, and that is without using neither the Alps or the Dolomites. But when using only the Apennines it was pretty clear that the combo of Catria-Petrano and Nerone in Marche had to be used. And above all San Pellegrino in Alpe-Abetone. The decisive stages are also pretty spread out throughout the tour. Probably stage 2, 7, 9, 12, 13, 16, 18 and 19 will have significance for the GC. The queen stages are stage 13 and 18, meaning that one of the queen stages comes in the second week. In addition we have a pretty freakin brutal medium mountain stage to Madonna delle Guardia and a potentially epic sterrato stage to Montalcino. All in all these four stages are combos that should be used more in the Giro, and especially the alternative finish of the race with San Pellegrino in Alpe as the third last stage and a sterrato stage as the second last. RCS should really pick up on that idea. In retrospect, the only thing I'm missing is a hilly stage with a short but extremely steep climb something like km from the stage finish prompting attacks from the GC contenders and action for the last part of the stage. There is room between stage 2 and 7 for a stage like that. But that will be a feature for my next Giro. I've already have several ideas for that, including an unusual last stage, and a brutal medium mountain stage in the Friulian hills. Reactions: Zams. Feb 18, 13, 8, 28, Visit site. OlavEH said:. Nordic Series Planica. Under the watchful eye of Slovenia's national emblem, the three-peaked Triglav mountain, this m pass is a strip of winding tarmac with occasional sections on smooth, well-aligned cobbles, along a ribbon known as Ruska cesta 'Russian Road' in honour of the forced labourers captured from Russian forces at the Battle of Isonzo, who constructed the road over an old, destroyed trade route at the behest of the Austro-Hungarian forces. It's a beast, and is the hardest climb of the race not considered to be HC. By using the Coeficiente APM, we arrive at a difficulty rating of for the final 11km; the PRC guys often use or as the cut-off for HC, so you know we're talking toughness here. In fact, in its characteristics from each side the Slovene monster resembles the Pyrenean challenge. In recent years, being usurped by Rogla and with Gorenjska focusing more of its regional sports funding towards its multitude of wintersport needs, the climb has fallen off the menu; it has also somehow never been climbed in the few times the Giro d'Italia has been in the vicinity, which is a strange oversight. Nevertheless, the fact that it has fallen from favour makes it all the more interesting to include here, especially as it's in that sort of role of sorting the contenders from the pretenders without completely annihilating the field which is why it's effectively a one-climb stage. The descent is also technical - very technical in fact, including scores of hairpin bends, lacets, twists and turns, so while it's very possible that the favourites may lay down their arms on the way down the climb, for those who are dropped to make it back to the others will take some effort that they probably would rather not expend. The first part of the descent is quite steep but it becomes more gradual, though while the road is sufficiently wide to take safely the cornering doesn't let up and continues all the way to the outskirts of the finishing town. Libertine Seguros said:. Very, very unpleasant. Apr 10, 10, 13, 23, Visit site. Or here in Norway it's often fjords and mountains. But I usually travel to the Alps at least one time each summer to hike there. I have this on my plan for my next version of the Giro. Has it ever been used in bigger race? Max Rockatansky. Jun 16, 1, 12, Visit site. Reactions: Libertine Seguros and roundabout. And I also have myriad race designs from far flung parts of the world that have yet to be posted, because I discovered a lot of unusual options and investigated a lot of unexplored territory for me in lieu of having actual races to follow. However, it is a different challenge to do something creative and find something new in well-trodden terrain, and I also have a colossal backlog of Grand Tours, especially Vueltas, built up over time - posting a stage race is a bit of a heavy undertaking, however, and so I thought it best to go for a short stage race here, in perhaps the most well-trodden area of all: the Low Countries. GPM: again, pretty self-explanatory. All climb summits give 3, 2 and 1 points to the first 3 over the summit. For a Tour of the Benelux, however, this could be a genuinely great competition and guarantee some tough rouleur action as well as incentives for the breakaways. Again like the climbs, 3, 2 and 1 points to the first three out of cobbled sectors. My thinking was that this would add up the points from the GPM and the King of the Cobblestones, and on top of that there are three intermediate sprints per stage, awarding 15, 10, 6, 4 and 2 points to the first five across them, and then awarding 30, 25, 20, 15, 12, then 10 down to 1 for the first fifteen stage finishers. The idea here being that the jersey would balance those that acquired points in minor classifications because they went in the breakaway, those who acquired points by attacking for the sake of winning, and those who tried to win via stage wins, especially given there are some stages not all where the GPM will favour people who can win the King of the Cobblestones and indeed some sectors which count for both the GPM and the King of the Cobblestones. Stage 2: Dronten - Nijmegen, km. Stage 4: Goirle - Knokke-Heist, km. Stage 5: Gistel - Louvain-la-Neuve, km. Reactions: will Stage 6: Couvin - Couvin, km. Last edited: Mar 8, Otherwise, those are some proper stages, especially the Louvain one. I know what you mean, and the Joostfietst cobblestone map is similar - both an incredible resource and a bit of a thumb in the eye for the work that you've already done yourself. I hadn't done a race in these race-saturated areas for quite some time, so it was still quite a positive thing for me. Stage 7: Marche-en-Famenne - Vaalserberg Drielandpunt , km. Reviewed 13 May The conditions were a bit slushy towards the end of the day but overall they were good for the time of year. We went out a couple of evenings in Tonale — which included a cracking night in the place where our reps were based, which had live music. Reviewed 27 Apr We had an awesome week, this was our first snowboarding trip to Italy and we loved it. I think the weather helped, there had been a lot of snow prior to our arrival and we had more at the beginning of the week. One other thing worth mentioning is a really good link between Passo Tonale and the next town along, Ponte di Legno. We had really poor visibility in Passo Tonale one day and went down to Ponte di Legno where there was blue skies and sunshine! We had a half board holiday at the Eden great hotel but had a mooch around the town and found quite a lot of small supermarkets around, so if you were self-catering here it would be easy to get food — and the prices were reasonable too. Reviewed 27 Mar The snow Christmas week was good enough for us, though it got colder as the week went on and snowed on the day we left. Reviewed 18 Jun It was my first time in Passo Tonale, we had a great holiday. I would definitely recommend doing the day trip over to Madonna di Campiglio, that was very good. Passo Tonale is a very high resort so it was full of snow even though it was only New Years. It was quite busy. They do fine food and a happy hour between 4 and 5pm or maybe it was 4 and 6pm. Much cheaper than France. Reviewed 14 May We went to a couple of places for a drink in the evenings and a few of the bars seemed OK. Overall we had a good experience on the piste. Reviewed 8 May I really liked Passo Tonale. We had lessons with the ski school and were very pleased with the instruction; we just did a couple of hours each morning and skied together in the afternoons which worked well. We skied past the husky skiing place and had a go at that which was good fun. Reviewed 6 May Passo is a good place for families - it was the UK half term week while we were here and we had virtually no lift queues anywhere, which meant we could ski wherever we liked! You probably have to be a good intermediate to enjoy the whole ski area. The family we met there had a daughter who was a nervous intermediate and she could cope well with most of the runs. If you want busy St Anton night life, Passo Tonale would be too quiet. We found a nice little bar where we could go and chat over some beers in the evenings. Everything seemed to be fairly reasonably priced, certainly cheaper than places in France and so forth! We were skiing in the middle of the season and the snow was very nice — there were a few icy patches and one day it was a bit cloudy but overall conditions were good. We saw quite a few snowboarders there and they have a ski park for snowboarders too. The people are so friendly - we found the most amazing restaurant called Scorpio up on the mountain where the staff are really nice. One place you must go is La Vogila, which is amazing, Filippo who works there is fantastic. Turin Airport is another thing altogether Reviewed 28 Jan Ski Holidays in Passo Tonale With magical views, a variety of skiing and being snow-sure, Passo Tonale is a treat for any skier. Tobogganing, snowmobiling and ice skating are but a selection for those with a quieter holiday in mind. At m, the town of Tonale is one of the highest purpose built resorts in the country, providing unrivalled snow quality, assuredness and an above average amount of sun coverage, allowing for those all-important goggle tan lines. Whilst the transfer time can seem quite long 2 hours minutes from Verona , the number of departure airports in the UK makes up for this, as you are able to fly from Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick and Manchester. A rental car would definitely be recommended, as the ease of access to and from the resort to the airport, as opposed to a coach transfer, will give you more time to soak in the scenery and atmosphere of this picturesque resort. For those looking to push the boat out and splash a little more cash, there are local speciality shops, as well as equipment shops for buying rather than renting your own kit. As the host of the Adamello Ski Raid, you could be lucky enough to witness an international spectacle. Usually later in the season around April , this competition combines mountaineering skills at the high altitude that this resort offers. This race was not only set up to test the athletes, but to advertise and expose the rich history of the area; one such example would be the locality of the Winter War from to Providing both local and historical exposure, as well as the adrenaline of the Ski Raid, this event will be sure to appeal to almost everyone. Whilst not well known, Passo Tonale has everything needed for all types of winter sports holiday makers. This relative anonymity allows trips here to have the potential of being much cheaper than other, more renowned places. A resort definitely recommended for beginners to advanced-intermediates, as well as those sticking to a budget. Whatever your situation or intentions though, you will not regret your choice of this stunning destination. Those looking to pick up skiing and snowboarding will think they have gone to heaven once they set foot in Passo Tonale. As a beginner, travelling far on numerous lifts to get to the tranquil runs can be a daunting experience. Although spread out, which makes traversing a must to be learnt as soon as possible, the variety on offer makes up for this. The glacier offers a variety of reds, or if you fancy gliding through the trees, Ponte di Legno offers steeper, wooded runs. The Alpino run is particularly recommended, to provide more of a challenge for those feeling brave. Also, if you make your way up to Cima Presena at m, you can drink in the panoramic views before descending vertical metres on blacks and reds for a rollercoaster of a ride. However, the off-piste makes up for the lack of pisted expert runs. Being so high, the resort is relatively snow-sure, and can offer large snowfall later in the season coupled with beautiful blue skies. With lots of options available, one particular recommendation would be taking the itinerary route off the Presena Glacier, which will take you right back to the bottom of the village, albeit with a ten minute walk. A guide and the relevant equipment is a must have though, and with police doubling up as mountain rescue, safety is paramount. If freestyle is your thing, you will be in ecstasy with the new park. At m in length, with two separate lines catering for different ability levels and over 25 different features, you will be hard pushed to find yourself bored. Daily maintenance means the park is kept to the highest quality, and music playing throughout the day allows for riding in style or a great place to meet and chill out. In addition to the park, there is also a border cross over a kilometre in length, with popularity rising hugely since the Vancouver Olympics. Crazy Horse also offers a happy hour, and is a great watering hole for the weary legs. For a more sophisticated evening, Passo Tonale offers a wide range of nineteen restaurants. For those who still want to feel that rush of adrenaline, the skidoo trip at night is essential, as well as the indoor climbing wall. And for those who just want a more serene evening or day off, you can glide on the natural ice rink, or simply float in the swimming pool. With such a variety on offer, Passo Tonale will not disappoint, whatever your idea of fun. Reviewed 14 Jan As a learner came here on my second time skiing , it's pretty ideal. Good blues of varying length means you can advance as quickly as you like, and the number of reds in close proximity means you can go in a mixed ability group and still be near each other. If you do learn quickly, the reds will keep you occupied Night life is mostly contained to the hotels- which was awesome at New Years, but unless you make friends in ski school, don't expect to come here with the idea of meeting many people in local bars or restaurants. Similarly, if you want a budget holiday and good learning skiing, you're in the right place. But experts who get bored easily and want an outrageous nightlife, stay away! Overall- good for newbie families wanting a safe and easy place to learn, not so much for experienced skiers wanting excitement on and off the mountain.
