Our last pubic update was almost a month ago during my visit to the operations in Klipgat in the North West; as we promised to give regular updates on our efforts to bring down the levels of crime. Over and above this, we will also during this briefing touch on a few pertinent issues that are of high public interest. Let me start by reiterating that Operation Shanela is being rolled out across the country, led by the Provincial Commissioner of each province. Thus far, it is quite encouraging to witness the cumulative successes of these weekly high-density, integrated operations, which are intensified from Thursdays to Mondays when crime is most reported at police stations. Since the update in Klipgat four weeks ago, we are now sitting at 47 arrests for various crimes. In the last two weeks, 14 number of suspect were arrested for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, to rape. We continue to act against the increase in drug dealing and abuse. It is disturbing that like alcohol, drugs are also a contributing factor to the high levels of contact crimes. Two weeks ago on 21 June , our sea border police unit at the Port of Ngqura in the Eastern Cape, seized 32 blocks of cocaine worth an estimated street value of R12,8 million in a container. Investigations continue to determine the specific destination of the drugs in South Africa and find the perpetrators. The container had just arrived from the UAE. We continue to intensify compliance inspections at liquor outlets in our efforts to address the reality that, alcohol remains one of the highest contributors to contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, assault, and domestic violence including crimes against women and children. We want to ensure that liquor traders are compliant with provincial liquor legislation. We are also conducting compliance inspections at second hand good dealers such as scrap-metal yards, recyclers, pawn shops and second hand car dealerships to ensure that there is prevention of dealing with stolen and illicit goods. Through sustained disruptive crime combatting operations comprising of roadblocks, stop and searches, vehicle checkpoints, cordon and searches, high visibility patrols, tracing of wanted suspects, focusing on murder and Gender Based Violence and Femicide GBVF related crimes, we can confidently report that, we are making impactful progress in the fight against crime. This is also notable with the recent rescuing of about 40 boys from an illegal initiation school in the North West. Three suspects were arrested and are appearing in court. Police in Limpopo have to date also closed down four illegal initiation schools. The process to reunite 34 boys with their families is underway following the shutting down of an initiation school at Leboeng ka Gamoraba in Sekhukhune. At Driekop Motlolo Village, girls were rescued and the process for them to return home is underway. A suspect from an illegal initiation school in Sibayeng, Makotopong was arrested and the process is underway to reunite 14 boys with their families, pending clearance by the Department of Health. On this score, we want to caution parents that when they do send their sons to initiation schools, they must ensure that those schools are legitimate and registered with provincial authorities and the Department of COGTA. This is significant bearing in mind that the provinces of Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape have been identified as those provinces that have the most reported shootings; and the most recovered firearms are from the same provinces. Our focus therefore, remains on permanently removing illegal firearms which enter the country through porous borders or, are stolen during house robberies or, are negligently left in vehicles by their legal owners. All firearms that are being destroyed this afternoon, were subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they were utilised in any commission of a crime. We are confirming that all firearms have been cleared. This firearm destruction process is a measure that has been put in place by the management of the SAPS, to ensure that firearms that are confiscated and recovered during operations, are permanently removed from society. With this said, we call upon legal firearm owners to be extra vigilant and take extra measures to safeguard their firearms, to avoid them landing up in the wrong hands! On this note, we are also reminding firearm owners to always ensure compliance to the relevant provisions of the Firearms Control Act of We continue to pull everyone within the borders of this country together, to fight crime by mobilising communities, working with the private sector including private security through our E2 project, to find these guns and remove them permanently with such firearms destruction activities. In terms of stability in the country, we continue to monitor communities closely, and stabilise problematic areas to ensure that we minimise the opportunity for criminality that often emerges during service delivery protests. With the implementation of Project 10 , the management of the SAPS remains resolute in our crime combatting initiatives, by ensuring more boots on the ground towards enhanced police visibility. We are therefore pleased to announce that, more than newly trained police officers consisting mainly of graduates in science and policing fields graduated a week ago at three SAPS academies, ahead of their deployment to various policing units and stations, of them, Science graduates, have been placed at our Forensic Science Laboratories. These were the last batch of the Project 10 , Intake, and have now been deployed to police stations across the country for experiential training. Still on the issue of strengthening our human capacity, we are embarking on a re-enlistment process, where we are targeting former members of the SAPS who left the organisation in good standing. This is to capacitate the Detective Services therefore, even those members who were employed in different environments, will on re-enlistment, undergo Detective Training for deployment in that space. While on the issue of building capacity and enhancing our crime fighting posture, it is worth announcing the arrival of our first batch of drones. We have previously announced that we would be looking at ways to embrace and deploy technology, to strengthen our efforts to deal with modern day crime trends and criminals. As we wrap up this briefing, it is important that we apprise the nation on the unfortunate incident of Sunday that involves members from our Protection and Security Service, otherwise commonly referred to as VIP Protection. Once we were alerted of the incident, we moved with speed and launched a probe to identify both the victims and our members, as well as to establish the circumstances that surround that incident. I can now confirm that those members have been identified and are currently being subjected to our internal processes, in line with our Discipline Regulations of , and Labour Relations prescripts. We also identified and successfully traced the victims and can confirm that a criminal case has been opened and is under investigation by the IPID. Thus far, all eight members have been issued with suspension notices and temporarily removed from their posts pending the outcome of our investigation.
