Joanna Yellowlees-Bound joins Iain for this special episode as we cover her year career in the ski industry, graduating from resort rep to managing director of Erna Low - one of the oldest ski companies in the UK. Joanna is one of the most experienced professionals in the UK ski industry, with a career that spans the first halcyon days of the ski business in the 80s to our post-Brexit world today, including a key role in the development of Arc I mix current episodes with those from your back catalogue. As someone who found skiing in middle age I am completely hooked. Keep up the brilliant work and here's to winter. There is so much to listen to in our back catalog: just go to theskipodcast. Our equipment specials are being published on the Skipedia YouTube channel. You can follow me skipedia and the podcast theskipodcast. Ellis Brigham are the winter sports specialists, with 16 shops around the UK where you can find all the kit you need for this winter. Alternatively, simply go to their website at ellis-brigham. Like all your episodes, this one was outstanding. Al has an excellent command of the subject, and he explains the basic foundational factors that go in to ski selection in an enjoyable and understandable way. You can follow Iaiun skipedia and the podcast theskipodcast. Click here to refresh the feed. We go behind the scenes of British skiing and snowboarding to find out what goes into running an organisation like GB Snowsport and how a country with no mountains outperforms countries from across the world. This episode is part of a series of podcasts we're publishing this winter focusing on women in the snowsports industry. I thought I was brave at 10 years old setting off into the hills on my own on a mountain bike After holidays in Tignes the last two winters my 6-year-old is hooked too. Today we look at skiing in Sweden and Hemsedal in Norway and we find out what it's like coaching your kids to be pro skiers. Plus we find out more about the European Sleeper service to Innsbruck and the Dolomites, as well as discovering what Crans Montana is like in September. Thanks for keeping this going over the summer, when most other ski related podcasts stop…roll on the autumn! You were talking about where to get second-hand skis. At the beginning of the season, a lot of resorts organise Braderies where the local shops pool ex-hire or last season kit to sell in one convenient place. Another great option is shops like Trocsport which sell secondhand skis on behalf of individuals. There are loads of small shops like this. You can do that too, there is so much to listen to in our previous episode, just go to theskipodcast. If you like the podcast, there are three things you can do to help: 1 Follow us. Chemmy Alcott is probably the most well-known woman in snowsports in the UK. After a racing career that took her to four Winter Olympics, she now balances presenting Ski Sunday on the BBC, with bringing up her young family and coaching new aspiring racers. Plus, we have the latest gossip on which European destination Vail Resorts are planning to buy next. We went to the Dolomites with Inspired Italy last season. It was an amazing adventure; great terrain, food, and people. Plus we report on Tignes' decision to split with Compagnie des Alpes. By Design. Super interesting. In this episode we focus on Courchevel, including an update on the Saulire cable car and how the resort is surviving without Russians, plus we discuss summer in Les 2 Alpes and find out about the new Northern Snow Show. I always listen to them as they remind me of all the places we've skied and boarded over the years. We also look into how SBIT are lobbying for more trains to the Alps and the possible Youth Mobility Scheme, which would be great news for young people wanting to do a ski season. Iain was joined by Australia specialist and founder of the Snowbest. I remember the old SCUK forum days. There are episodes of The Ski Podcast to catch up with. We find out about the off-piste resort of La Grave and the state of the snowsports market in the USA, including ways to tackle climate change and bring newcomers to the sport. Love the podcast, thanks! There is so much to listen to in our back catalog, just go to www. There is so much to listen to in our back catalog, just go to theskipodcast. I skimmed previous episodes and was surprised to see you've never covered the Brit favourite of Sauze d'Oulx. It suffered an unfair reputation as a Benidorm-on-snow resort in the 90s, particularly after a very sneering Wish You Were Here episode. It's actually a charming old town and has a fabulous ski area linking to the huge Vialattea' Paul Bond: 'Episode was as ever great listening. I've skied all over Europe and finally skied in Baqueira in March. Plenty of challenge with a unique vibe but also easy for a mixed ability family to ski the same mountains and meet up. My top tip: Hire a car from Toulouse and stay in Vielha in valley: a great old town with lots of accommodation and good value eateries. This special episode is an interview with pro-skier and filmmaker Paddy Graham. Paddy was one of the first wave of British freeskiers who burst out of the UK dry slope and indoor scene into the international arena in the earlys. Paddy is an extremely accomplished freeride and freestyle skier, but is best known for the incredibly creative ski films that he's starred in and produced, as co-founder of the legendary production company Legs of Steel. I retired to the Swiss Alps in and have listening since then. I loved the early episodes with Jim, but I have to say the podcast has gone from strength to strength since you took it on alone. We discuss Baqueira Beret in Spain and finding out about skiing in China — the fastest growing ski market in the world. We discuss Les 2 Alpes in France, Trysil in Norway and find out more about a great new way of travelling to the snow on your ski holiday. It helps me out with a bit of research. I have taken the decision to offset my carbon to mitigate air travel, but the lack of economically viable train option from Manchester and similar areas remains a problem. I'm heading to Engelberg in just over a week. I'm currently wrestling over travel - given my concerns around climate change. Currently my calculations are that it will be cheaper to fly. I wondered whether you have any tips for reducing the cost over the Eurostar and SNCF published prices. Keep up the good work with the podcast. This episode is a special interview with professional snowboarder Xavier De La Rue. We speak about his competitive past, the cliff named after him in Verbier, his move into film making and adventures in places such as Alaska, Svalbard and Antarctica. We also discuss his almost fatal avalanche and how it changed his views about risk-taking. Finally, we talk about sustainability and his Audi Experience Camps taking place in Verbier this winter. We find out more about Val Cenis and the Haute Maurienne area of France as well as discoving what the skiing in Slovenia is like. Iain was joined by freelance journalists Katja Gaskell and Rob Rees. I am sure you could get him back on, sounds like he has a hundred more stories in him. I was keenly interested in your interview with Mike Goar from Vail Resorts. I also found the two recent episodes discussing the resorts in Norway fascinating. Keep up the good work. In this episode, we discuss Verbier, Saalbach Hinterglemm and the impact of climate change on ski resorts. Iain was joined by freelance journalist and regular guest Catherine Murphy and David George, founder of the PisteHors. In most of the Vail Resorts-owned resorts prices have gone sky high so only the rich can ski. Ski passes are almost three times the price of a European ski resort. Lift lines are unbelievably long. The local staff are removed to bring in centralised American staff, ripping the heart out of the resort. Latest Earliest Most played Most popular Search. Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. When you register, you get our free weekly -ish snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in Username:- Password:. Or: Register to be a proper snow-head, all official-like! Page Previous 1 , 2 , Prev topic :: Next topic. Poster: A snowHead. Agree on the above comments regarding the BBC interview European Pubs have opened two new bars called Copina one in Meribel and one in Courchevel so not convinced of the comments regarding shutting Jack's and Evo owing to Brexit as they have opened two new bars! Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person. GreenDay , sugarmoma , thelem , Steve Angus , Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see? There are good and bad bars everywhere - in a ski resort some target a particular demographic or nationality, but regardless if you get it wrong then your stuffed. There used to be a big popular skandi nightclub on Rue de La Poste which we frequented in our 30s - its now a supermarket, despite being super popular years ago. You need to Login to know who's really who. HoneyBunny wrote: For me, part of the pleasure of going skiing in France is enjoying the French food and culture and same for Austria. French food definitely but I prefer British ski instructors. Less jaded attitudes, generally. Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do. GreenDay , Ahhhh the days of the Yeti! Try Cave du Loop underneath the Loop sounds like your kind of place and mine now. You'll need to Register first of course. The Yeti, yes that was it, ta! Clearly the old er age affected my memory - and cheers re the Cave du Loop tip - will let all my geriatric pals know Actually, another has just sprung to mind - the Wobbly Rabbit up Val Claret - spent many a mental night there back in 'our heyday' Then you can post your own questions or snow reports GreenDay , Now your talking, and a trip home to Lac in the Wobbly Van driven by Charles the oldest seasonaire in the village. Next time you are out PM for a beer - might be a good ole night! After all it is free. You'll get to see more forums and be part of the best ski club on the net. Skier X'ed out Well I'm totally wiped out this evening Shattered now though! The people behind it is one of the owners of Blue Note well Lou has sold her share to her brother Matt now , her boyfriend and basically all the other people that were behind the food and serving side of the Planks Cafe in previous year they have had a shake up there. Anyway awesome is all I can say Being a Saturday the pistes were deserted The best of luck to them! Apart from that and now having a very stiff back, a nice family meal this evening there is not much else to report Ben is slowing getting back to his normal self so hopefully he can go back to creche on Monday - fingers crossed! We shall see! Ski the Net with snowHeads. A good 10 - 15 cams in Val this morning Steve Angus , thanks for heads up about new Corner Cafe. Looks good value for EK! And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports. A freshen up Im not sure I had a great nights sleep as I woke up feeling more tired than when I went to bed last night. I was more concerned though that my back was still rather tight and sore all that racing yesterday. Anyway as I write this evening I am pleased to say that it seems to have eased up nicely which is good news Alas it was not too early a start to the day thankfully as Clare and the kids were not going anywhere in particular. Ben seemed better too so I think one more night tonight and we will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel - phew! So we had about 15cm of fresh snow in town and about 20cm up high and it was still snowing but there was not too much wind Up high it was quite windy though! So I met the same client as I have had the last few days and have a few more times over the next week and after dropping his kids of at the group lessons they are on we headed off to work on sagittal splits So up top on the Bellevarde there was a punchy wind blowing but not strong enough to really affect the lift openings. With the fresh snow rather haphazardly spread out because of the wind effect some places were quite deep and others scoured. We hit the various easier pistes up top to do a series of exercises and finally we got some video footage and then watched it inside the exit area of the funi. Clare took Olivia out for a ski when I got back and I had some luck as Ben had a mega sleep for about 2. I even managed to properly watch the 2nd run of the mens slalom - yay. In fact Val d'Isere is a rather happy place this evening as Clement Noel who came 2nd today is a native of Val and is still part of the Club des Sports here. Anyway it was a rather relaxing afternoon and after the kids were in bed it has been a relaxing evening too! So the snow continues to fall intensely this evening and we must have had a good 30cm already in the last 24 hours down here in town and there could be a LOT more coming tonight into tomorrow. The temps have risen to a few degrees below 0 so it is not baltic anymore which is nice! A full day including some off piste on the cards tomorrow before I head down the valley to do a food shop is the schedule for tomorrow which all in all means it will be a long day tomorrow. Better get some sleep then! PBJ - it was and lots more tonight eh! PeakyB - yup most certainly is. If you think about it its only 2 lift rides away from Val too! So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much. HoneyBunny wrote: swiftoid , it's a disgrace isn't it? I saw a quote from someone online the other day saying they like going skiing in Meribel 'because it has a great British vibe'. For me, part of the pleasure of going skiing in France is enjoying the French food and culture and same for Austria. I cannot stand the British attitude of going abroad and expecting everyone to speak English and serve pie and chips, and being offended when they don't. Val d'Isere is overrun with Brits, hopefully not all rude ones. The irony of a Brit complaining of a ski resort being overrun with Brits. You know it makes sense. GreenDay wrote: There are good and bad bars everywhere - in a ski resort some target a particular demographic or nationality, but regardless if you get it wrong then your stuffed. Seem to remember that the Grotte du Yeti was Flemish Belgian owned but was frequented by loads of Scandinavians as part of 'all inclusive' trips. Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:. Kenzie wrote: The irony of a Brit complaining of a ski resort being overrun with Brits. I wasn't complaining. It's true. But I don't go to any French ski resort because I think 'it has a great British vibe'. Kenzie , I seem to remember a proper snowball fight taking place one night across the Rue d l Poste between the Yeti Bar and possibly the Angel Bar. The Dutch and Scandis had a height advantage, both in location and stature. Excellent day Another 20cms Viz poor as cloud snow and blowing a gale at the top Great powder off the stade drag and really good face when it opened around 3pm Then off to solarise and a couple of lovely runs in improving viz as the sun made an appearance Off with Thomas from alpine tomorrow Steve Angus -hi Steve, do you know if STVI do a 'student discount' for large groups of students-I am looking to bring a school group of around 30 next December week before Christmas so quite quiet and wondered if it was worth contacting them independently? We've successfully asked for them before at other resorts during that week but never tried Val. PBJ - great day you had there! Good luck Gonna be quick tonight Well folks Ill start with an apology - I forgot to get photos today! There was a good 20cm snow overnight but the problem was that it was nearer 1m in some places as it had drifted and nothing elsewhere? Ben went back to creche today and Olivia was at school so with that all sorted I headed to town, collected some off piste gear for the same guy I've had the last few days and off we went. They actually managed to get things moving quite quickly and by Solaise was open and a few other lifts. The wind was coming from the north once again and was slowly dropping off not that the visibility was improving though! It was the first time that 'A' had ever seen the off piste gear and worn it so after doing the safely chat we went looking for some snow for him Anyway a few laps and then finally when they got the lifts atop the Solaise open later in the morning some skiing up there before we headed for lunch. Lunch was take at the new Refuge restaurant atop the Solaise and boy is it swanky in there and very nice indeed. It has been totally refurbished from the old place and totally unrecognisable! Amazing food. Not cheap though! Nice in Le Refuge with a lovely menu albeit expensive - even by Val standards!! The afternoon we did some drills for off piste performance and finally as the pistes that were open got very churned up we finished with some moguls. As I said above after I came off the slopes I headed to Bourg for some food shopping and a few other things down there and by the time I did that and got back and put it all away it has turned into a very long day indeed! Sorry folks hoping to have a more interesting update tomorrow! A vegetarian section on a menu in France, wow whatever next!! Good to see though, that along with the Corner in Tignes look to have a decent selection for mrs endo. Makes that menu look like the pricing at your local greasy spoon. The Dutch and Scandis had a height advantage, both in location and stature The Angel was a cellar bar! It was 'crowd trouble' that got the Yeti shut down, just after the smoking ban came in. Great day Generally superb as our guide Thomas picked the best lines and aspects. Blue skies Trying to post more photos Stupidity galore We awoke to clear skies and a cold start at that. I had to get to the office to get some off piste gear to take with a colleague to meet our lessons at the bottom of the Tommeuse No sooner had I got out of the Olympic but I could not believe the reckless behaviour I saw Talk about stupid - beyond stupid. However as the day progressed it appeared that no major incidents had been reported. Snapped a photo of the man walking on his own towards the Cairn! However whilst the pisteurs here were still clearing much of the resort you should check out this video clip taken somewhere else in the Alps this morning - wow - just WOW - look how that propogates all along the ridge line for ever and ever!!! Yes endoman vegetarian section I know! PBJ - thanks for posting the photo - nice to meet you in the lift line this morning briefly! Looks like you had a good day - id say that first photo was the pitch under the Datcha lift - I know the pitch well! I took a quick lunch at the Sun Bar - yummy Croque Mr before heading out for a ski with 'A' again - lots of lesson time with him the last week or so! The plan for the afternoon was to work on his moguls and indeed we lapped around and around on the Tommeuse and BOY were the bumps nice and soft and fun to ski and BOY did he make some great improvements this pm! This evening I have managed to plod through some more paperwork and jobs at home and of course have been glued to the TV with what is happening in Westminster - wow! Nice morning views! Rather nice on the pistes today! Tomorrow I could be posting quite late as I am heading down the valley to Bourg to do an avalanche safety talk to the guys and girls of Coolbus so I won't be back until later on. Snow before Christmas; no snow, just sunshine for almost two and half weeks and then a dump over 48 hours of over a metre in places. Goliard , yes it is Grimentz and there are a couple of pistes below that slope too. Unfortunately we left on Saturday but friends still there tell me conditions are amazing. Interestingly the piste du chamois hasn't opened yet this season as there was evidence of a lot of avalanche activity in that combe even before this weekends snow. Snow certainly better on the Tignes side Super late lunch at Marmottons - horse bourgignon then off to Glacier, Cugnai and home for more very average fare from Skiworld at the Lodge Need to sleep Thanks Goliard - new someone would know where it was videod etc! Impressive non the less! Ive heard reports that it was 'just' some broken ribs but that doesn't sound like it would be a PGHM job necessarily so maybe there is more to it than that - who knows. PBJ - sounds like a good day - I'm finally going to get some off piste in tomorrow - yay! So folks it has been another full on hectic day Then seasonnaires this pm, down the valley to deliver the avalanche talk this evening and then back up So forgive me for being so brief this evening A full day off piste tomorrow. Thanks Radio Val for this lovely pic! Piste day in pretty variable conditions - flattish light and light snow from midday getting heavier by late afternoon and still moderate snow now. Some really poor viz at times this afternoon. We skied to Motte, Brevieres and Fornet Guide day tomorrow should be awesome. I'm sure some of those people at the Oulliette Plage haven't moved since I was there in April ! Looks stunning as always. But we were chatting about what it looks like in summer on the lift yesterday, a tatty shed on a slag heap was pretty much the consensus. Got to love snow! The Berghotel on the Faulhorn does not have a swimming pool, but at m is higher than anywhere on Solaise m summit. Love that place. Wonderful for a sun-soaked lunch with a fabulous view.
