The shipment was on its way to Port of Tauranga. A joint investigation by police and customs has led to 50 kilograms of cocaine being intercepted on its way to the Port of Tauranga. It is believed the shipment was sent to New Zealand from Brazil in February, Detective Inspector Tom Gollan, from police's national organised crime group said. Four men were initially arrested following the discovery, and a further seven arrests were made after police searched properties in Auckland and Tauranga. Two of the men arrested were believed to be senior members of a well-known gang, Gollan said, while two others were believed to be in the same gang. A man arrested at the address was found with a loaded pistol. The group of men had been preparing to recover the cocaine, Gollan said, and they had purchased walkie-talkie radios, an army ghillie suit, bolt cutters, gloves, security branded shirts and high-vis gear. The 11 men are facing charges relating to the importation and possession for supply of cocaine and will appear in Auckland District Court. Two of the men also faced charges related to the guns found, and Gollan said further charges as more information came to light has not been ruled out. Customs Investigations manager Dominic Adams added all air and sea cargo shipments were screened by Cutoms and any that raised red flags were looked at. New Zealand RSS. Follow RNZ News. Tags: crime. Three people have been arrested and charged more than two years after the largest ever cocaine shipment was found on New Zealand shores. Police launched Operation Bask following the discovery, and on Monday said they had arrested three people, all from Auckland. Two men, aged 27 and 35, and a year-old woman are facing charges including importing cocaine, possessing cocaine for supply and participating in an organised crime group. They were both due to reappear in the Tauranga District Court on 3 October. More than two years later it remained the largest cocaine shipment to ever arrive on New Zealand shores. The trio have also been charged with importing 30kg of cocaine that arrived in Tauranga in December , also from Panama. These arrests demonstrate the persistence and determination of NOCG detectives and Customs staff in disrupting the drug supply line. Experts say the amount caught far exceeded how much is usually consumed in Aotearoa, and so they suspect the shipment's intended final destination was another country. They were arrested as they left a container yard - where 17kg of cocaine had been left - on electric scooters. A new report can reveal cocaine use has increased by 93 percent in the past year.
