One centre in the Pilbara has closed its doors to clients on remand or bail, and the only centre in the West Kimberley is wading through 40 referrals. There are calls for more focus on addiction prevention and a detox facility in the West Kimberley. A criminal lawyer in Western Australia's far north says clients with methamphetamine addiction on remand or bail have been left with 'nowhere' to go for treatment, amid concerns the drug's use in the region has reached critical levels. Lawyer and Aboriginal Legal Service ALS West Kimberley lead Paul Tobin said it had become increasingly difficult for people navigating the justice system to get access to rehabilitation. Mr Tobin, who has worked in the West Kimberley for over a decade, said assisting people with addiction was key to reducing rates of domestic violence in the region, which were the highest in the state. Concerns about local methamphetamine abuse have grown in the past year, with reports of children as young as 10 accessing needles. A recent District Court decision found communities were being 'completely and utterly destroyed' by the drug. Mr Tobin said methamphetamine use in the Kimberley had reached disastrous levels. A WA Police spokesperson told the ABC it could not provide specific statistics on methamphetamine-related offences, citing resource constraints. Milliya Rumurra, located in Broome, is the only residential alcohol and drug rehabilitation service in the West Kimberley region. The bed facility is not currently at capacity, although staff are working to process 40 referrals. However, Millya Rumurra is no longer working with clients serving jail terms. Justice system referrals used to be sent to Yaandina's Turner River Rehabilitation Centre in the Pilbara, but in May the centre decided to close its doors to people on remand or bail. Mr Tobin said that decision, and the difficulty in getting clients into Milliya Rumurra, meant some of the people he represented were losing hope. Mr Amor said Milliya Rumurra wanted to accept all patients, including those on bail or remand prior to sentencing. But he said getting the 'right mix of people into rehab' was important, 'and a lot of that is around risk management'. Mr Amor said people withdrawing from methamphetamine often exhibited stronger symptoms and there was a heightened risk of blood-borne viruses, which meant the centre was forced to decline some patients. He said Milliya Rumurra recently had 'up to 80 referrals' at once and staffing and admission requirements were key issues. Andrew Amor says he's seen an increase in people presenting with methamphetamine addiction. Mr Tobin said there was an 'urgent need' for a methamphetamine prevention and treatment map in the Kimberley. Ms Dumbrell said she would also like to see more options for people with addiction navigating the justice system. Mr Amor said he wanted the state government to ensure prevention was a key focus of strategies for dealing with drug and alcohol abuse, and he was now working towards a Kimberley-specific plan. Earlier this year, Kununurra's Wunan Foundation was awarded a tender for four low-withdrawal medical beds. Mr Amor said that was a step in the right direction, but the West Kimberley needed similar resourcing.
